Michael Smith Is Not Popular With The Cycling Community

The cycling community is up in arms over a series of tweets from ESPN.com columnist Michael Smith regarding the nasty crash at the Tour de France Monday.

Innocent enough, right? Try telling that to the Tour de France Lanterne Rouge blog, who wants ESPN to suspend Smith.

(Really? A suspension?)

Tony Kornheiser should have warned Smith that cyclists don’t exactly have a sense of humor when it comes to mocking their sport.

Jordan Williams: ESPN's Van Pelt 'big factor in helping me make my decision' to go pro

Former University of Maryland standout Jordan Williams might have inadvertently thrown Maryland alum and ESPN personality Scott Van Pelt under the Terrapin school bus on Tuesday, telling The Washington Post following a pre-draft workout for the Wizards that Van Pelt was “a big factor in helping me make my decision” to go pro.

Maryland fans would undoubtedly love to hear more.

“Just giving me feedback, what he thought about it. Just trying to make me make the right decision. He did a great job, and I give him a lot of credit for going out of his way. He’s a really busy guy, so for him to go out of his way to do that is unbelievable.”

Williams, who left the Maryland program after two years, told the paper he met Van Pelt during his freshman year when the SportsCenter anchor and ESPN Radio host spoke to the team at a practice prior to a game versus Duke.

“A great guy; a wonderful person,” Williams said. “Always trying to reach his hand out and help, even when he doesn’t have to. He’s always using his knowledge and using who he knows to help me out.”

It may indeed have been nice for Van Pelt to share some worldly wisdom and perhaps give Williams some feedback, but included in that sagacity should probably have been the words, “Now if anyone asks if we spoke, please don’t throw me under the wheels of a large, speeding vehicle.”

ESPN told the WaPo that they or Van Pelt would have a response later in the day.

Albom play about Ernie Harwell premieres tonight in Detroit

Mitch Albom, best-selling author of Five People You Meet in Heaven and one-time suspension recipient for writing creative fiction in the Detroit Free Press, has penned a play about the late Ernie Harwell, the long-time Detroit Tigers radio announcer who passed away in 2010. The play premieres Thursday at City Theater in Detroit.

Albom, a frequent guest on ESPN’s The Sports Reporters, told the Associated Press the play called “Ernie” was Harwell’s idea.

“When he died, I tried to write a play that would serve as a legacy,” said Albom, who also wrote the best-seller Tuesdays with Morrie. “I started it as a one-person show, then I realized Ernie had no angst, no inner demons, the kind of stuff you need for a one-person show. Ernie wasn’t Hamlet. I made it as a two-person show with a kid who got Ernie to basically broadcast his life with his memories about everything from Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth to the 1968 and 1984 World Series, which people will get to see.”

Harwell called Tigers games from 1960 to 2002. He received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and was honored by the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1989.

I'm Sorry WWE Fans: "Snooki" Is Raw Next Week

WWE’s Monday Night Raw has delivered some great moments during the past month, highlighted by the return of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

But all of the momentum the WWE was building towards Wrestlemania XXVII is coming to a screeching halt next week when Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi of MTV’s Jersey Shore guest stars.

Did the WWE learn nothing from Total Nonstop Wrestling, who brought in Angelina Pivarnick last week on Impact? continued…

NFL Owners Meeting About 18-Game Regular Season

NFL owners are meeting today to discuss the possibility of expanding the NFL season from 16 games to 18 games. The Washington Post‘s Mark Maske has more information on the meeting, which is not expected to culminate in a vote.

Still, if the owners do decide to knock off two preseason games in favor of adding two more regular-season games, the change could be made as soon as 2012.

A longer season would be a boon for the television networks that cover football. NFL games are easily the most consistent programs on TV in terms of delivering viewers. More games means more action for networks to televise, and the advertising revenue that comes with it.

For the league and individual teams, it could result in more valuable TV deals once the current ones expire.
