Columnist Says Jay Bilas Doesn't Know What He's Talking About

You can add Michael Bradley of Philadelphia Magazine to the list of people that won’t be receiving a holiday card from the Bilas family this December.

Bradley called out ESPN analyst Jay Bilas following his comments on Selection Sunday that VCU wasn’t worthy of making the NCAA Tournament.

“What Bilas and his kind don’t understand – - or don’t want to admit – - is that college basketball is no longer the top-flight sport it was even 10 years ago. It may still provide some thrilling moments in March, but the overall quality of play has dropped considerably. A variety of reasons can be cited, including the yearly exodus of top underclassmen to the NBA, a continued decaying of fundamentals at the high school level (thanks, AAU ball!) that forces coaches to use strategies that feature athleticism, rather than skill, and a moving away from team-first attitudes among better players aching to be playing professionally. continued…

Cam Newton Does David Letterman's "Top Ten" List

Cam Newton‘s Heisman media tour included a stop on the Late Show with David Letterman where the Auburn quarterback read the “Top Ten Things Cam Newton Can Say Now That He Won the Heisman Trophy.”

It’s not Newton’s fault because he didn’t write the jokes, but when did David Letterman‘s “Top Ten” list stop being funny?

The only one remotely funny was number eight and that’s only because of the visual stuck in my head now.

Thanks, Verne Lundquist.

'NFL on CBS' Doubleheader Becomes Highest-Rated NFL Broadcast in 2010 Season

It was a great day for football on TV yesterday, as the “NFL on CBS” doubleheader delivered an 18.5 rating/32 share according to Nielsen overnights. That would make it the highest-rated broadcast of any NFL game during the 2010 season so far.

The performance by CBS even out-rated NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” which aired in primetime and tied a ratings record of its own.

CBS aired a number of games during the doubleheader, depending on the market. Among them: the New England Patriots-Chicago Bears, the New York Jets-Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs-San Diego Chargers and Arizona Cardinals-Denver Broncos.

More information, after the jump.

CBS Sports' LeslieAnne Wade Going Independent

The top PR executive for CBS Sports, LeslieAnne Wade, is leaving the company to start her own media strategy and public relations firm, the network says. Wade’s first client will be CBS Sports, where she will be “closely involved in the overall media relations effort around CBS Sports businesses, personalities and programming.”

Wade has been with CBS since 1993.

“I take such tremendous pride in my long time association with CBS Sports,” said Wade in a statement. “With the support of Leslie Moonves, Gil Schwartz and Sean McManus, I was given an opportunity to further a path in new media relations, and for women in sports television. It is an enormous professional compliment to count CBS Sports as the first client in my new venture.”

ESPN To Stream Content For Time Warner Customers

Starting on Oct. 25, Time Warner Cable customers will be able to watch their favorite ESPN channels on their computers at no additional cost.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will be available through a new authenticated service that verifies the viewer is a Time Warner Cable customer.

As part of ESPN’s plan to shift to “TV Everywhere,” there will be fewer videos available on ESPN.com for non-Time Warner customers.

“We believe this ‘TV Everywhere’ model is going to be what the industry at large is going to pursue,” said John Kosner, general manager of digital media at ESPN. “We’re going to make similar deals with lots of distributors.”

Last month, Walt Disney Co. and Time Warner reached a new deal to keep their channels on the cable giant. As part of the deal, ESPN3.com would also be made available to Time Warner Cable customers.

Verizon’s FiOS customers will also gain online access to the ESPN Networks in the upcoming months.

If you’re a DirecTV customer like me, this has to sting a little bit, but not enough to consider switching back to cable.

Jason Whitlock Profiled In New York Times

Never did I expect to see the day Jason Whitlock profiled in the New York Times.

Especially after his now infamous three-hour rant against his former employer, The Kansas City Star.

But the FoxSports.com columnist was featured in the paper on Sunday, which has to be a sign of the apocalypse.

For sports media junkies, the profile touches on all the things you have come to known over the years about Whitlock – - from his days playing football at Ball State University to his short lived stops at ESPN and AOL.

The highlight of the profile though was this gem of a line from columnist Dan LeBatard of The Miami Herald:

“I try not to burn bridges, but he napalms them. He’s fundamentally unafraid.”

If that doesn’t sum up Whitlock, I don’t know what does.
