Dodgers Evaluating Scully's Announcing Ability

Vin Scully, 83, has been with the Dodgers since 1950, has seen everything that can basically happen on a baseball field (for better and worse), and entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 as the recipient of the Ford Frick Award, given to venerated media members for service to baseball. Nevertheless Scully is a Dodgers employee, and so the people running the Dodgers’ organization <del>into the ground</del> felt compelled to send a survey to Dodgers season-ticket holders, asking them to rate Scully’s announcing abilities in six categories.

A season-ticket holder emailed the survey to TJ Simers of the Los Angeles Times. He wrote, “On a scale of 1 to 5, They wanted my opinion of Vin Scully in the following eight areas: 1. Knowledge of baseball; 2. Knowledge of Dodgers organization; 3. Objectivity; 4. Accuracy of calls; 5. Storytelling ability; 6. Focus on the game; 7. Style; 8. Overall performance.”

Regardless of how you score Scully, the more pertinent issue is what the Dodgers intended to do with the results of the survey. From the response they gave to Simers, the answer appears to be nothing, as Simers wrote, “a team spokesman said Vin’s job is his as long as he wants it.’”

Then why bother with the survey?

Damian Goddard Fired From Rogers Sportsnet

Rogers Sportsnet host Damian Goddard was fired Wednesday, one day after chiming in on the Sean Avery/Todd Reynolds gay marriage controversy.

Reynolds, a hockey agent, called out New York Ranger Sean Avery for his support of gay marriage.

“I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage,” Goddard said in a tweet.

But if you ask Rogers Sportsnet, Goddard’s departure had nothing to do with his tweet. continued…

Power Balance LLC has reached a five-year tentative agreement with the Sacramento Kings to take over the naming rights, ending a 25-year relationship with ARCO. According to Sactown Royalty, the arena will be renamed the Power Balance Pavilion.

Terms of the Power Balance deal weren’t immediately available but ARCO paid an estimated $700,000 a year for the naming rights. continued…

Fab Five Documentary Scheduled for March

The rumored documentary about Michigan’s Fab Five is slated for March, according to Richard Deitsch‘s Twitter feed.

Last month, the Detroit Free Press mentioned that Jimmy King, Jalen Rose, Ray Jackson, Juwan Howard, and Chris Webber were participating in interviews for a forthcoming documentary.

The special will likely fall under the 30 for 30 umbrella. Even though the critically acclaimed series is finished with its originally slated run, Bill Simmons mentioned on a podcast that ESPN will continue it in some form going forward.

In addition to the Fab Five documentary, the Steve Bartman one will also air in 2011.

You’re about to get a lot more familiar with his face.

The Sports Guy, who is in the midst of a short tour supporting the paperback release of his The Book of Basketball, will make his debut as an NBA analyst during Friday’s Miami Heat-Golden States Warriors game. He’ll join Dan Shulman and Mark Jackson on the ESPN telecast.

Simmons is rapidly following Rick Reilly, Michael Wilbon, the Around the Horn crew, and the rest of the journalists who jumped to the silver screen. He’s shown up on a few episodes of PTI this year and previously guested during a PBA event and a college basketball game or two with his friend Rob Stone.

We wish him the best of luck and will listening to the Awful Announcing crew skewer his performance.

Sports Leagues Take to the Stream

Sports leagues have long relied on television revenue to drive profits, but new technology has enabled them to skip the middleman and go directly to the fans.

Of course, owners and league executives are not about to bite the hand that feeds them, so most of the sports streaming options online don’t have the complete suite of games, usually blacking out games in-market that are readily available on their TV partners.

An article in Multichannel News by R. Thomas Umstead outlines the current state of league streaming:

“With streaming [the leagues] are putting markers on various platforms with the assumption that they will grow,” Lee Berke, president of sports consultancy LHB Inc., said. “The bulk of viewers are still watching live sports games on traditional linear platforms like cable and broadcast television, but it’s growing and eventually it’s going to be a major percentage of how people watch sports, so you have to make your presence felt now.”

continued…
