"Sick Fake" Jon Heyman Tweets False Greinke Trade

What happens when a person with clearly too much time on their hands decides to impersonate Sports Illustrated writer Jon Heyman on Twitter?

The baseball world found out Friday night when a fake tweet was sent out claiming that the Philadelphia Phillies had acquired Zack Greinke from the Kansas City Royals.

SB Nation and radio host Michael Kay ran with the story until the real Jon Heyman pointed out on Twitter that folks were being duped by an impostor.

“Some sick fake person tweeted under a name close to mine that greinkes going to phils,” Heyman tweeted. “Not true. Not even close to true.” continued…

MLB Announces 2010 Ford C. Frick Award Winner

Dave Van Horne spent more than 30 years calling Montreal Expos games. It was worth the effort.

On Wednesday, the current voice of the Florida Marlins won the Hall of Fame’s Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting.

“This is the highest award a baseball broadcaster can receive. I am obviously thrilled, humbled and very excited. It is the professional highlight of my career,” he told media during a conference call announcing the news. “I am humbled to be among those people that are previous winners of this award. This was a very overwhelming and emotional day.”

Van Horne was up for the award in 2009 as well. At the time, his radio broadcast booth partner Glenn Geffner said some nice things about the announcer:

“He’s a pros pro. You look at even after 40 years, the way he prepares for every broadcast. That’s one of the things that has amazed me, working with him for the first time, to see how much time and effort he puts into every individual broadcast.”

If nothing else, Van Horne looks like a very, very nice person.

No, not more cowbell. More football.

Well, you’re in luck. Thursday Night Football returns this week with the Atlanta Falcons taking on the Baltimore Ravens. NFL Network will broadcast the game, followed by the Miami Dolphins-Chicago Bears pillow fight on Nov. 18 and the suddenly important and competitive New England Patriots-Detroit Lions tilt on Thanksgiving.

The SNF overnight rating is up five percent from last week’s game between Pittsburgh and New Orleans, which went head-to-head with the World Series.

University of Texas Cashing In Thanks To ESPN

ESPN has hooked their horns in the Longhorn Network.

According to Orangebloods.com, the University of Texas has reached an agreement with ESPN to distribute the Longhorn Network on cable systems beginning in the fall of 2011, earning the school an extra $12 million a year in television revenue.

As part of the deal, ESPN will pay Texas $10 million up front, making UT as the top TV revenue-producing school in the country.

The deal is for 10 years and would guarantee Texas $12 million annually in addition to the revenue the school would receive as part of the Big 12′s current television deal with ABC/ESPN and Fox. As part of the current Big 12 television deal, Texas will earn roughly $17 million in 2011-12 and $20 million beginning in 2012-13. continued…

HBO Sports Starts Production On UNLV Documentary

HBO Sports has started production on Runnin’ Rebels Of UNLV, a documentary on head coach Jerry Tarkanian and his UNLV men’s basketball teams.

Based on the HBO release, this might be one of their best documentaries yet:

Runnin’ Rebels Of UNLV examines the larger-than-life personalities of future NBA stars such as Larry Johnson, Greg Anthony and Stacey Augmon, as well as the eccentricities of their head coach, who was a lightning rod for controversy. Jerry Tarkanian put UNLV – once dismissed as “Tumbleweed Tech” – on the map in his first full season as head coach, leading the team to a 20-6 record in 1973. Implementing an up-tempo offense and preaching defensive intensity, he guided the Rebels to the Final Four four times and won the 1990 NCAA Championship with a 30-point drubbing of the Duke Blue Devils. continued…

Pelada Shoots, Scores

At its core, soccer is the most social of games. You need little to play – some semblance of a ball, two “posts” for goals – but it does require bodies. Solo kickabouts rarely last.

Luke Boughen and Gwendolyn Oxenham prove this point in Pelada, a documentary that follows the two former college stars as they travel the world, searching for pickup games. They find them everywhere, from a prison in Bolivia to a town square in China.

The film, which played its world premiere at South by Southwest in March and scored positive reviews from outlets included The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and the BBC, held its New York premiere Tuesday night at Legend’s Restaurant and Bar. SportsNewser spoke with Oxenham before the screening about the definition of success, the drudgery of promotion, and kinda, sorta being a movie star. continued…

Post World Cup, America Doesn't Care About Soccer

In another life, I work as a reporter covering the United States men’s national soccer team. As you certainly know, the World Cup took place this summer and ratings jumped 41 percent. People cared.

So did editors. At least for the three- to six-month period before the tournament. Multiple editors asked me if I could write stories for them explaining the World Cup, and I was only too happy to oblige. Spreading the gospel, etc., etc. Then, the United States lost and… crickets. Suddenly, no one cared anymore and interest dried up.

Now, I’m not surprised – soccer is a fringe sport, one that’s entirely driven by the World Cup – but the sheer immediacy of it all was a bit shocking. There was interest, and then there was none. Google Trends reflects this reality. The graphic above shows the search term “soccer.” The spike is the World Cup, then it returns to pre-World Cup levels.

A longer view is even more telling. The graphic below shows two spikes – the 2006 World Cup and the ’10 event. Huge spikes, then massive valleys. The beautiful game isn’t gaining much ground.

At least 2014 is only four years away.
