ESPN's Howard Bryant Arrested For Domestic Assault

ESPN senior writer Howard Bryant was arrested on Saturday and was charged with assaulting his estranged wife and hitting a police officer who tried to subdue him in Buckland, Mass.

Five witnesses gave statements that claimed Bryant was arguing with a woman and eventually choked and pushed her into a car. After the police arrived, Bryant reportedly struck an officer in the chest with his elbow. It took four police officers three minutes before they could subdue Bryant.

“We are gathering information about it,” spokesman Josh Krulewitz told Jeanette DeForge of The Republican.

Bryant was released on $5,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned on Monday in Greenfield District Court.

The former Washington Post writer was hired by ESPN in 2007 and is a contributor to ESPN.com and ESPN the Magazine.

Paralympics Has A New Star

Wired’s excellent sports blog, Playbook, notes Oscar Pistorius – “Blade Runner” – lost his first race in seven years.

The double amputee fell to Jerome Singleton in the 100m race at the International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships despite picking himself to defeat the Beijing Paralympic silver medalist.

The American Singelton ran a 11.43 and won in a photo finish.

Pistorius, who already claimed gold in the 200m, hopes to race in the 2012 Olympics in London. Perhaps he can bring Singleton along?

BCS Bowl Game Ratings Down Compared To Last Year

Michael Hiestand of USA Today took a closer look at the BCS ratings on ESPN – and they weren’t as impressive as you might think.

“ESPN’s Auburn-Oregon title game Monday drew 15.3% of U.S. TV households – down 11% from last year’s Alabama-Texas game and the lowest title game rating in six years. This followed notable drops for ESPN’s other BCS games, which this season aired on cable TV for the first time: The Oklahoma-Connecticut Fiesta Bowl fell 30%, followed by the Stanford-Virginia Tech Orange Bowl (off 22%) and TCU-Wisconsin Rose Bowl (off 14%). Only Ohio State-Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl was up (+25%).” continued…

English Soccer Chooses Money Over Loyalty

Alright! Another sponsor-related soccer controversy.

Less than a year ago, the Football Association (the ruling body of soccer in England) agreed to a four-year sponsorship deal with Fiat. The car company would become the FA’s “official car supplier,” for a price.

Apparently, that price wasn’t high enough. The FA pulled an about-face, striking a deal with Vauxhall, which will pay roughly $7.5 million pounds to replace Fiat.

For backing out prematurely, the FA has to pay around $750,000 to Fiat.

Think Twice Before Selling Those Rose Bowl Tickets

The days of college newspapers covering student council meetings and publishing the crime log are long gone.

The Badger Herald, an independent student newspaper at the University of Wisconsin, published the names of the 33 students that were selling their Rose Bowl tickets on Facebook Marketplace, hours after purchasing them.

The Badgers were allotted 5,800 student tickets by the Rose Bowl and they sold out in 20 minutes.

How dare students make extra money during the holidays by selling tickets to a game they clearly have no interest in attending.

Fun facts we learned in The New York Times‘s profile of James Brown, who “invested a six-figure sum to start [Brown Technology], which specializes in database management and information security.”

He “sold Xerox and Eastman Kodak copiers to federal agencies in the 1970s and ’80s.”

He lost 40 pounds after hitting almost 300 on the scales with the help of a good diet: “His lunch of Greek organic yogurt, maple syrup and raw sunflower seeds awaited him in a small black bag.”

He leverages his celebrity, and the executives of the company enjoy football metaphors: “When we get the ball inside the 20, we give it to J. B. and he scores,” Reginald Brown said. “If we call one of our customers and say, ‘J. B. is coming to meet with you,’ who would tell him no?”

“He wanted to build a company that would hire disadvantaged workers and dispel images about minority-owned businesses.”

SB Nation Gets Paid

Is this the equivalent of a young upstart phenom signing his first big contract?

All Things D reports that SB Nation raised $10.5 million in Series C funding. Khosla Ventures led the round. The collection of 290 sports and news sites had previously raised $13 million.

Kara Swisher believes SB Nation will be valued in the $60-$90 million range.

Markos Moulitsas, of Daily Kos fame, and others founded the startup in 2003 which has thrived recently under the leadership of Jim Bankoff.

Mel Kiper Denies Claims In Sports Illustrated Story

And here comes the fallout from George Dohrmann‘s Sports Illustrated story.

ESPN is looking into Mel Kiper’s relationship with NFL agent Gary Wichard as described by Josh Luchs in this week’s SI cover story on agent tampering in college football.

In the article, Luchs claims Kiper worked with Wichard in order to persuade potential clients by using his NFL draft rankings as incentive for players to sign.

(No wonder those draft ranking arguments with Todd McShay are always so heated).

“Conversations with players, which are occasionally facilitated by agents, are a valuable way to get to know the players,” Kiper responded in a statement. “These conversations have never compromised my integrity, and my 32-year record supports that.”

Luchs stood by his claim of Kiper’s involvement on Mike and Mike in the Morning on Wednesday.

“What Mel did do in these situations, whether he realizes it or not, he allowed himself to be used in the recruiting process,” Luchs said.

This will likely be the first of many folks to publicly deny the allegations described in Dohrmann’s story.

Mike Hewitt has a new trophy for his mantle: Barclays Shot of the Season Award for 2010. The Getty Images photog caught Darren Bent’s shot deflecting off a beach ball and into Pepe Reina’s goal.

“I remember driving up to Sunderland from my home in Brighton hoping for something dramatic – the beach ball certainly made the trip worthwhile!” he said.
