2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony Most Watched Ever For NBC, More Than 40 Million Tune In

NBC’s coverage of the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics was the most watched opener ever, with an average of over 40 million Americans tuning in.

This was despite (or due to?) a tape delay that meant that U.S. viewers would see the events unfold hours after they actually happened in London.

Regardless, the 40.7 million average is higher than the 1996 Atlanta games, which had held the previous ratings record with 39.8 million viewers. Beijing 2008 drew 34.9 million viewers, and Athens 2004 drew 25.4 million.

Oscars Morning: GMA Tweets, Parties Through the Night

champion_2-23.jpgIn addition to co-hosting the official Red Carpet pre-show, Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts interviewed several Oscars winners after the ceremony last night. Roberts talked with Sean Penn, Penelope Cruz and Danny Boyle, while Sam Champion talked to the cast of Slumdog Millionaire.

Champion was on the party beat last night, and was tweeting from the events throughout the night. A sample: “At the slumdog party- surviving on Red Bull and Red Velvet cupcakes- waiting for the winning ensemble to arrive.”

> Update: According to the preliminary ratings, the telecast averaged a 23.3 household rating and 35 share. That’s up 6% from last year’s all-time low of 21.9/33. But down from 2007 ceremony, which averaged a 27.7 in the metered markets, and the 2006 broadcast, which had a 27.1.

Oscars Morning: “Slumdog” Cast/Crew Live on Today

Slumdog_2.21.jpgThe Oscar-winning director of Slumdog Millionaire Danny Boyle, as well as the producer and editors, who also took home awards, and some of the cast of the sleeper hit all appeared live on the Today show this morning, still in their Oscar attire. It was 4am pacific time.

Today show co-anchor Meredith Vieira conducted the interview live from Hollywood. Vieira also happens to be the host of the American version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” (If you haven’t seen the movie, the Indian version of the show is central to the plot.)

Vieira has been a champion of the film since its release, calling it “one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.” “Today” also got the first post-nomination interviews with Boyle and the cast. And Vieira even got the two lead actors to re-enact some of the dance moves in the final scene of the film. (Clip after the jump)
