Soledad O’Brien Back to CNN Mornings?

TVNewser has learned the current iteration of CNN’s “American Morning” may be in its final months of production and will likely be replaced by two new shows, one airing from 5am-7amET and another from 7am-9amET.

We’re hearing Ashleigh Banfield, who has been working freelance for ABC News for nearly two years, may be tapped to anchor the earlier hours, while former “American Morning” co-anchor Soledad O’Brien, is being mentioned as anchor of the second two hours.

Banfield, the former MSNBC and Court TV anchor, is under contract to ABC News until the end of the year. O’Brien has been spending the last several years working on documentaries for the “In America” unit. No comment from CNN.

“American Morning,” which airs from 6-9amET, has had a rotating cast of temporary anchors since the departures of John Roberts late last year and Kiran Chetry in July.

“American Morning” — once a solid #2 behind “Fox & Friends” — has fallen behind in the ratings. In August, “American Morning” finished behind MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” for the fifth straight month, with the politics-heavy MSNBC show up +21% year-over-year.

As has happened in the past when shows are canceled, the staff of AM will have to re-apply for jobs after Executive Producers of the new shows are named.

Daryn Kagan on Octavia Nasr Controversy: “CNN Blew It”

DKagan.jpg“CNN blew it”, former CNN anchor Daryn Kagan tweeted today.

She’s referring to the network parting ways with its senior editor of Middle East affairs, Octavia Nasr, after Nasr tweeted that she was “sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah..One of Hezbollah’s giants I respect a lot.”

“I’m not here to defend Nasr’s tweet,” Kagan expounded on her blog today, “But I promise you everyone [at CNN] has views. The sooner you own that, celebrate it even, CNN just might be back on its way to success.”

Kagan continues:

Yet, fire her? Really?…Was not Anderson Cooper lauded for blasting officials during Hurricane Katrina coverage? How long did Lou Dobbs last proudly expressing his opinions on the air? How long have top executives remained in place despite rapidly declining ratings?…

As to you, dear Octavia — I promise you, there is a great chapter waiting for you after CNN.

More: Former CNN correspondent and anchor Miles O’Brien also weighed in today, tweeting that Nasr “is a great person and fine journalist. Her clarification should suffice.”

Kagan Back On CNN

CNN Kagan.jpgThe start of confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice nominee Elena Kagan have been a big focus today for the cable networks — including CNN, where Daryn Kagan worked as an anchor for 12 years. On Twitter today, Daryn jokes about “‘Cousin’ Elena” (no relation, actually) putting the name Kagan back in play on her old network.

Funny to look up at CNN screen and see ‘Kagan’ plastered all over it. Been awhile since they had to type that! :)

Hartman, Kagan On ‘The Pet Beat’

SHartman.jpgCBS News correspondent Steve Hartman and former CNNer Daryn Kagan are featured in the current issue of Best Friends Magazine, a publication for pet owners. Excerpts from the article — titled “The Pet Beat” — about journalists who sometimes report on animal stories:

Kagan.jpg• “If I could do one genre to do day in and day out, it would be animal stories,” says Hartman. “I want people to smile, to feel good….and to feel good about the planet we live on…No person is as pure and as good as an animal.”

• Kagan says she loves her ‘good news’ website, DarynKagan.com — “I don’t feel like I’m working.” The magazine also reports that “syndication, internet, and book deals are all in the works” for Kagan in the future.

The Ticker: Ifill, Kagan, Roberts, Roker

> Being an expert isn’t so easy — just ask PBS’s Gwen Ifill. Appearing on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire as last night’s “Ask the Expert” resource, she tried to help contestant Jennifer answer the question at hand…but guessed wrong. Politico has the video.

> Former CNNer Daryn Kagan is making the magazine rounds. She writes an essay in September’s Guideposts about creating her post-TV career, and she’s featured as September’s “Big Idea Profile” in the Martha Stewart publication body + soul.

> ABC’s Deborah Roberts and her husband, NBC’s Al Roker, will appear in a forthcoming Sesame Street special, “Families Stand Together: Feeling Secure in Tough Times”. The program, which will also feature Today financial expert Jean Chatzky, is scheduled to air in September.

The Ticker: Kagan, Kaplan, Friel…

> In addition to a new role contributing to Oprah Radio, Daryn Kagan writes this week for U.S. News and World Report about her recent trip to Africa. “Off I went for one of the most meaningful Christmases of my life, just after the U.S. elections, during a real period of hope in Kenya,” she writes.

> Huffington Post has the video of Rick Kaplan‘s appearance during last weekend’s HBO airing of “Your Welcome America.” Find out why Will Ferrell (playing former Pres. George W. Bush) nicknames Kaplan, “The Liar.”

> Courtney Friel starts her Q&A with SoupCans with this answer to how she got the Fox News job: “Well…I went on a date with Roger Ailes.” Of course, she continued, “I’m joking!! Actually — the process was pretty standard. My agent sent FOX a DVD.” She also talks about her husband, Carter Evans (who works at CNN) and puts to rest rumors of a feud with Julie Banderas.
