McEnroe: Tennis Should Get Rid of Warm-Ups

Tennis great John McEnroe, NBC’s lead analyst at Wimbledon, thinks the sport would benefit from eliminating pre-match warm-ups and letting the first ball hit be the first serve. Speaking to Michael Hiestand of USA Today, McEnroe said, “Some people might knock it having no warm-ups. But there’s more at stake in boxing – people’s lives are on the line – and you don’t see them jabbing each other a little bit before the fight.”

Maybe because punching people causes damage to both parties, whereas hitting a tennis ball back and forth tends to be less bloody. Really, it’s hard to see how eliminating warm-ups would benefit tennis at all. Would the tension be higher? I guess. But the first time a player pulls a hamstring, commentators would be bemoaning the absence of suitable warm-ups. It’s commendable that McEnroe wants to find ways to increase the popularity of his sport, but looking to boxing for inspiration seems like a non-starter.

According to Rich Eisen of the NFL Network, the Minnesota Vikings-New York Giants game will now be played at Ford Field in Detroit due to the Metrodome roof collapsing.

There’s a new kickoff time as well – 7:20 p.m. ET. The game will still be shown locally on Fox in the Minnesota and New York markets and on the NFL Ticket package.

Monday will also mark the first night game in Detroit in nearly a decade … and of course the Lions aren’t in it.

Fox Sports pregame show had exclusive video as the collapse happened. Pam Oliver did a live shot for FOX NFL Sunday this morning showing a pile of snow mid-field and the tattered sections of the roof dangling from above.

World Wrestling Entertainment has an Official Mobile Magazine. For $2.99 a month, the weekly publication promises to be “stuffed with as much content as your phone can handle,” like interviews with wrestling stars, blog posts and breaking news. Let’s hope your phone can fight back.

The application is the latest in a series of Mozines from startup company ThumbMedia Group in Burbank, CA, which designs and distributes mobile magazines for publishers across multiple platforms. Mozine also created the ad for the application, which ran in the October issue of the print edition. Said ThumbMedia CEO Mike Cartabiano:

We’ve just launched on the iPhone and we’re already #85 on the top 200 paid entertainment applications, which is pretty spectacular. We have – last time I looked – a 5-star rating. We’re happy, they’re happy, it’s been a very seamless process for the WWE team in working with us.

Android and Blackberry editions are coming soon.
