How Long Will Gibson Anchor World News?

gibson_3-23.jpgIn a Houston Chronicle profile of Charlie Gibson by David Barron, the ABC World News anchor reveals his intention to stay with ABC News for the foreseeable future. “I wanted to stay through the election, because I thought it was going to be a fascinating election, and stay through the inauguration,” he said. “Now we have a heck of a story, and I want to stay until this story sort of rights itself.”

Gibson’s contract was set to expire after the 2008 election but has been creatively renegotiated. “We basically have a contract in which it’s you work for awhile, and there’s no term to it,” said Gibson. “Here is what we will pay, we’ll talk every once in awhile, and if you want to quit, OK, and if we want to kick you out of there, we’ll kick you out of there.”

Also discussed: the origins of Gibson’s sign off phrase, “I hope you had a good day.”

The Ticker: Maddow, Martin, Friel…

> Variety’s Ted Johnson profiles MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and some observations about the way MSNBC is using the host. “She guested on Jay Leno and visited the ladies at ‘The View,’ he writes, and, “was the first analyst…called upon for reaction [after Obama's address] — a plum position that in the past may have gone to Tim Russert.

> CNN’s Roland Martin is profiled by The Houston Chronicle’s David Barron, and the future 8pmET fill-in host describes why he’s “a hybrid.” “I am a true 21st-century multimedia, multi-platform journalist,” says Martin. “There is no box you can put me in, and if you put me in a box, I will kill you to try to get out of it.”

> FNC’s Courtney Friel is the focus of a video profile by Philly.com’s Marnie Hall. “Just because you wear a bikini and look more like a supermodel rather than a reporter, doesn’t mean you can’t be a national network correspondent,” says Hall of the “homegrown gal.” Click continued to see the clip, and find out how Friel met husband Carter Evans of CNN (when she was an intern)…

Glenn Beck, the “Recovering Egomaniac”

beck_1-27.jpgThe Houston Chronicle’s David Barron profiles FNC’s Glenn Beck, who explains one of the differences between himself and his new colleague Bill O’Reilly — he’s not looking out for you.

“I know that we have created this box for ourselves on talk radio where you must be a Republican,” says Beck. “But I don’t care about the candidates. I care about the republic. Everybody on the radio or TV says, ‘I’m looking out for you.’ Not me, Jack. I’m standing guard and shouting as loud as I can about what I think is coming because of my kids. I’m looking out for my kids.”

Beck describes himself as a “recovering egomaniac” and describes how his life has changed since his early days in radio. “You have to have a decent respect for your ability to reason, but there’s a difference between saying I’m right and doing what I’m doing,” he says.

Sam Donaldson: “What Are These Young Kids Like Brit Hume Stepping Down For?”

hume_10-29.jpgAs FNC anchor Brit Hume approaches his impending retirement, one of his former colleagues is hoping he reconsiders. “What are these young kids like Brit Hume stepping down for?” asks ABC’s Sam Donaldson in a Hume profile by Politico’s Michael Calderone. “I think Brit’s at the height of his power.”

He also made a pitch to bring Hume to ABC, saying if he were president of the network, he’d tell Hume, “I understand that you want to step down and all of this. Could we talk about your future?”

Also in the piece, one of the longtime panelists of Hume’s show “Special Report,” Juan Williams, describes the anchor. “That guy brings out the best in my game,” Williams said. “If you’re debating Brit Hume, you better know what you’re talking about. He can be sharp, even arrogant, and angry. If you don’t have your feet on the ground, you’re going to get your ass handed to you.”

While Hume exits FNC full-time after the election, some have questioned whether the election will affect FNC’s dominance in the ratings. The Houston Chronicle’s David Barron talks to VP of news editorial Jay Wallace and Bill Hemmer about the issue.
