France TV Station Apologizes For Tour de France Crash

France Television apologized Monday for causing a nasty crash during the ninth stage of the Tour de France:

“France Television apologizes to the riders, the teams and to the ASO (the Amaury Sports Organisation media group) for the accident during the ninth stage of the Tour de France which was caused by a technical assistance vehicle covering the race,” said a statement quoted by Agence France-Presse. “France Television will respect fully the measures which will be taken by the ASO to improve safety.”

Video: Tour de France Crash Caused by French News Car

Enduring the peloton is grueling enough for Tour de France riders without having to worry about getting side-swiped by television news cars. In this video a French television car crashes into rider Juan Antonio Flecha, who then hits rider Johnny Hoogerland, who then flips through the air and lands on a fence. The French blamed Lance Armstrong for the crash.

Wolff and Durham Given Curt Gowdy Media Awards

Alexander Wolff of Sports Illustrated, who has covered professional and college basketball since the early 1980s, and Jim Durham, the former voice of the Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls, are the 2011 recipients of the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Sports Illustrated is reporting.

The award is named in honor of the late sports broadcaster and former president of the Hall of Fame board, and is given to both print and electronic media members.

“In his decades of covering college basketball for SI, the depth and breadth of Alex Wolff’s work has been inimitable,” said editor of Time Inc.’s Sports Group, Terry McDonell. “He has written with a lyrical and literary grace in stories on Final Fours and NCAA tournaments, in profiles of the game’s most influential figures, in investigative pieces that protected the very integrity of the game while the vision of his work pushed basketball to become truly international. There is no journalist who better embodies what Curt Gowdy meant to the game.”

Durham’s most memorable call might be of Michael Jordan’s shot over Craig Ehlo of the Cavaliers in Game 5 of the first round of the 1989 NBA playoffs, among several sports replays that send Cleveland fans to the knife drawer.

Wolff and Durham will be honored during the Hall’s enshrinement ceremony on Aug. 11 in Springfield, Mass.

John King catches David Ortiz’s 300th home run

CNN anchor John King and his wife CNN correspondent Dana Bash were in Boston for the weekend for a family gathering. King took in Saturday’s Boston Red Sox – Chicago Cubs game with seats atop the Green Monster. Right place. Right time, for King — bottom of the fourth inning David Ortiz smacks his 300th home run. Over the Monster, heading directly for King who caught — or as he Tweeted, “knocked it down.” Big Papi becomes just the fourth player in club history to hit 300 home runs.

“We just sent papi the ball,” King Tweeted at someone who’d asked if he caught the piece of history. In return, King got this sweet bat, autographed by Ortiz with the simple, “Thanks!”

CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo talks with the New York Yankees’ Joba Chamberlain and the Boston Red Sox David Ortiz during today’s Closing Bell at the CES in Las Vegas.

We spent some time this afternoon at the NBC Universal booth at CES. Several NBC properties are represented here: NBC.com, the NBC stations, the affiliate news service NewsChannel as well as NBC News and CNBC. Lester Holt will co-anchor the Saturday Today show. And Maria Bartiromo is here to anchor Closing Bell and her weekend Wall St. Journal Report.

We caught up with Bartiromo on the CNBC set in the middle of the action and talked about how the recession is affecting the consumer electronics industry and why NBCU has chosen to spend big bucks (this year’s booth is twice as big as last year’s) to be the broadcast sponsor:
