ABC News Journalist Trevor Barker Dies At 59

ABC News lost one of its own on Sunday, as veteran audio engineer Trevor Barker passed away at age 59. Barker, based in South Africa, worked with Peter Jennings, Diane Sawyer, David Wright, Terry Moran and David Muir, among many others over his career at ABC.

Barker traveled the world for the network, covering genocide and revolution in Africa, to the election of the new Pope just earlier this year.

“I first met him in Jabul Saraj, Afghanistan, in 2001 when he joined me in the long wait for Kabul to fall,” said Wright, who worked with Barker last March in Rome for the election of Pope Francis, in a statement. “Even then, he was like Crocodile Dundee with a sound kit, a grizzled veteran who with good humor and steady nerves made tough experiences easier on novice war correspondents like me.”

Papal Conclave Coverage: Broadcast and Cable Networks

The conclave to elect the next Pope will begin Tuesday after morning mass. Here’s what the broadcast and cable networks have planned for coverage.

ABC’s Diane Sawyer will broadcast “World News” from the Vatican beginning this evening. Sawyer is joined in Rome by Terry Moran, Josh Elliott, David Wright, Cokie Roberts, Rob Claiborne and Cecilia Vega. The network plans to broadcast special reports for the cardinals’ twice-daily votes.

CBS’ Scott Pelley will also be live from Vatican City starting today. Norah O’Donnell and Charlie Rose will host “CBS This Morning” live from Vatican City, with CBS News correspondents Allen Pizzey and Mark Phillips contributing to coverage.

Chris Jansing and Lester Holt will lead coverage for NBC News and MSNBC from Rome. Anne Thompson, Keir Simmons, Claudio Lavangna and George Weigel will also contribute to NBC-MSNBC coverage. Both networks will provide special reports for the cardinals votes. Jansing and Holt also led coverage of the last papal conclave in 2005, which Jansing talks about in a lengthy Q&A with Inside Cable News.

On Fox News, Shepard Smith will anchor from Rome. He will be joined by correspondents Amy Kellogg and Lauren Green to cover the conclave. Bryan Llenas will be reporting for Fox News Latino.

Chris Cuomo and Anderson Cooper will lead CNN’s coverage from Rome. Ben Wedeman, Miguel Marquez, Dan Rivers and Becky Anderson will report, along with CNN en Español’s Adriana Hauser and Jose Levy. CNN Vatican analyst John Allen will also contribute to coverage.

Pope Benedict Coverage: ABC News

With Pope Benedict XVI set to resign on Thursday, U.S. networks are beginning to plan for coverage of the unprecedented (at least in modern times) event.

George Stephanopoulos and Terry Moran will lead the network’s coverage of the Pope’s departure, anchoring “Good Morning America” from the Vatican on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as two special reports Thursday morning. Moran will anchor “Nightline” from Rome on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as contribute to the network’s coverage. David Wright, Ron Claiborne, Cokie Roberts and Christiane Amanpour will also report from the Vatican.

Wright covered the death of Pope John Paul II and the election of Benedict, while Roberts’ mother, Lindy Boggs, was the Ambassador to the Holy See from 1997-2001.

Diane Sawyer will lead the network’s coverage of the Conclave in March.

Who’s Going to Rome to Cover the Pope?

Fox News’s Shepard Smith will soon be on his way to Rome, reporting from the Vatican on the resignation of Benedict XVI and upcoming Conclave and election. Senior Foreign Affairs Correspondent Greg Palkot will be there tomorrow while Amy Kellogg should be on the ground by this afternoon. Smith, Palkot and Kellogg all covered the death of Pope John Paul II and election of Benedict in 2005.

NBC News correspondent/MSNBC anchor Chris Jansing, who also covered the last Papal transition will be leaving this afternoon for several days of reporting/anchoring and will also cover the election of the next pope. In a Media Beat interview, Jansing told us covering the death of John Paul II and election of Benedict was the most fulfilling assignment of her career: “It was just an extraordinary global event and also had some personal meaning to me.” Jansing will join NBC Rome correspondent Claudio Lavagna already on scene. Richard Engel will also report.

CBS has Allen Pizzey in Rome and London correspondent Mark Phillips will be joining him.

“GMA” Weekend Anchor Dan Harris, along with David Wright, Jeffrey Kofman, and Nick Schifrin will be reporting from the Vatican. Wright covered the 2005 transition. ABC’s Cokie Roberts, whose mother served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, will provide a historical perspective.

CNN’s Rome-based correspondent Ben Wedeman will cover and will be joined by Jim Bitterman, Max Foster and Jose Levy for CNN en Español are all en route.

Network Plans for Pope John Paul II Beatification

While the U.S. networks have big plans for next Friday’s royal wedding (or hadn’t you heard), a mere 48 hours and 1,100 miles away in Vatican City another big event will unfold: the beatification of Pope John Paul II. Beatification is the first step to Sainthood.

FNC will carry the Beatification Mass beginning at 4amET Sunday, May 1. Jamie Colby and Eric Shawn will anchor the Mass from New York while religion correspondent Lauren Green will report from Vatican City. Rome-based correspondent Greg Burke will report and FNC analyst Father Jonathan Morris makes a return to Rome to contribute.

MSNBC’s Chris Jansing who will be covering the royal wedding, travels from London to Rome Saturday morning and will begin appearing on MSNBC Saturday. Jansing will anchor live coverage of the Beatification Mass beginning at 4amET. She’ll be joined NBC’s Vatican analyst and author George Weigel and Vatican Art Historian Liz Lev. Jansing covered the death of Pope John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI in 2005.

CNN/U.S. and CNNI will broadcast the Mass Sunday with Jon Mann anchoring. Jim Bitterman will be the correspondent at the Vatican and author John Allen will provide analysis. CNN en Espanol will cover with Jose Levy.

ABC’s David Wright is the correspondent for TV and other platforms. ABCNews.com will live stream the Mass with ABC News San Francisco-based producer Ariane Nalty reporting. (Interesting note: Nalty’s brother is Monsignor Christopher Nalty who worked at the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy. Ariane’s father-in-law is Charles Zewe a former correspondent for CNN).

NBC’s Anne Thompson and CBS’s Allen Pizzey will report for their networks.

ESPN Rolls Out New Endorsement Guidelines

Following recent criticism (ie: Erin Andrews‘ Reebok deal) ESPN announced their new endorsement guidelines for their 1,000-plus commentators Wednesday.

Norby Williamson, ESPN executive vice president, took to the company’s new Front Row blog in order to explain the guidelines:

As you would expect, we will bring careful consideration to each situation presented and we recognize that clearly there will be exceptions. ABC News Rejiggers Correspondent Assignments

ABC News has made a number of changes to its correspondent assignments, both domestically and abroad.

Some of the more notable moves:

Jeffrey Kofman will move to ABC’s London bureau, he had been based in Miami. Kofman was front and center during two of 2010′s biggest news stories: the Chilean miner rescue and the BP oil spill.

Matt Gutman, whose reporting for ABC News Radio during the BP oil spill drew praise from executives, will now be a correspondent for all ABC News broadcasts and platforms, and will be based out of Miami. Gutman is currently in Haiti reporting on the cholera outbreak there.

Jim Sciutto will return to Washington from London, where he has served as senior foreign correspondent since 2002.

Abbie Boudreau Moves from CNN to ABC

ABC News has hired away CNN investigative correspondent Abbie Boudreau. Boudreau will be joining ABC News’ Los Angeles bureau beginning Monday.

The award-winning Boudreau joined CNN in October 2007 as an Atlanta-based correspondent in the Special Investigations and Documentary unit. She has worked on multiple CNN special reports, including “Killings at the Canal: The Army Tapes,” “Biden: Revealed,” and “Campus Rage.”

For ABC, Boudreau will be a general assignment reporter joining David Wright and Mike Von Fremd in the L.A. bureau. This is ABC’s first on-air correspondent hire since a massive round of cuts at the network earlier this year that resulted in the elimination of more than 350 positions, including several West Coast correspondent jobs.

8.8 Earthquake Strikes Chile Overnight

The U.S. cable news networks are providing coverage this morning of an 8.8 earthquake that struck central Chile overnight, along the Pacific coast. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit the region in 50 years — since 1960′s 9.5 quake, the biggest in recorded history.

FNC, CNN and MSNBC are relying on images from TV Chile as well as from that network’s news channel 24 Horas. CNN is also relying on information from CNN Chile, and CNN en Espanol. MSNBC is using the resources of NBCU’s Spanish-language network Telemundo. That network, as well as Univision, have been airing uninterrupted coverage from Chile this morning.

Reporting times: Fox News – 2:35amEST, CNN/U.S. – 2:59am, MSNBC – 3:25am. The quake struck at 3:34am. Santiago is two hours ahead of EST.

It was an all-media WPITW list last night on MSNBC’s “Countdown.” Keith Olbermann awarded the bronze to “Fox & Friends” EP Lauren Petterson for defending this graphic, the silver to Glenn Beck for his relationship with the gold industry, and the top prize to ABC News’ David Wright whom he accused of “selective editing and dishonesty” in his report last evening on “World News” about global warming and Jon Stewart. Tonight’s “Presidential Questions” Announced

The CBS Evening News’ “Presidential Candidates” series begins tonight, in which Katie Couric asks the same questions to Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, and the answers air back-to-back.

Tonight’s questions could get some interesting responses:
• “Why do you think there has not been another terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11? And as President, how would you prevent that from happening again?”
• “What one personal flaw do you think might hinder your ability to be President of the United States?”

The series runs every Wednesday.

Also, On ABC’s World News, a series called “What’s the Difference,” airs all week. The series takes a look at the difference between the presidential candidates on key issues. David Wright‘s report last night focused on the economy.
