Brian Kenny Leaving ESPN After 13 Years

After 13 years at ESPN, anchor Brian Kenny is leaving the network in September.

“Brian did great work for us. His contract was up and he found a new opportunity,” ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys told Michael McCarthy of USA Today Monday.

Kenny, who just finished another season as host of ESPN2′s Friday Night Fights, will host his final SportsCenter early next month.

McCarthy hinted that the former Baseball Tonight anchor and Wednesday Night Baseball play-by-play announcer could end up at MLB Network.

Japan Photos, Video Set March Marks for MSNBC Digital Network

Much like rival CNN.com, the March 11 earthquake and resulting tsunami in Japan produced records for the MSNBC Digital Network in March, with photo slideshows and the PhotoBlog on msnbc.com performing exceptionally.

A total of 670 million slideshows were viewed via the MSNBC Digital Network during the month, setting a new mark and topping the previous record-holder — January 2010, when Haiti suffered an earthquake — by 63 percent.

Interactive panoramic images from MSN Japan helped to boost PhotoBlog to a strong March.

Other strong March performances were turned in by the sites for: Today, which set a new monthly site record with 67.9 million video streams, 7 percent above its previous record, reached in January; NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, which bested its previous site record for monthly video streams by 30 percent, tallying 37.7 million; The Rachel Maddow Show, which saw its 10.7 million video streams top its previous mark by 53 percent; and Dateline, which served 8.1 million video streams in March, 40 percent more than its prior best.

Japan Earthquake, Tsunami Coverage Boosts CNN.com

Coverage of the devastating earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck Japan March 11 helped CNN.com to set several traffic marks.

Saturday, March 12, the day after the quake struck, the website totaled 67 million global page views, according to Omniture SiteCatalyst, marking the highest weekend day in CNN.com history. The site also served 60 million global video starts on the day of the earthquake, an all-time high, topping the day President Barack Obama was inaugurated, the previous record-holder.

CNN.com averaged 75 million page views per day from March 11-20, up 66 percent compared with the same period in 2010, and 60 million page views per day for the entire month of March, up 25 percent compared with February and 34 percent versus March 2010.

News blog This Just In averaged 1.1 million page views per day through March 27, up 27 percent versus February and 213 percent compared with the year-ago period.

CNN Newsource reporter Sandra Endo talked with anchor Ali Velshi today about how her family in northern Japan is coping in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami. Endo’s father was born in Fukushima. Her grandmother, aunt and cousins lived through the quake, but many neighbors did not.

Glenn Beck earthquake comments get people talking

The commentariat is reacting to Glenn Beck‘s latest controversial comments — this time about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. On his radio show yesterday Beck said: “I’m not saying God is, you know, causing earthquakes — well I’m not not saying that either!

“What God does is God’s business, I have no idea. But I’ll tell you this — whether you call it Gaia or whether you call it Jesus, there’s a message being sent. And that is, ‘Hey you know that stuff we’re doing? Not really working out real well. Maybe we should stop doing some of it.’”

The comments got the ladies of “The View” going this morning. Whoopi Goldberg: “If this is because we’re misbehaving and God is pissed. I would check the mirror Glenn.” Also, HLN host Joy Behar was confused about whether Pat Robertson is still alive. He is.
