News And Doc Emmy Awards: PBS, ABC, CBS Lead List Of Winners

The 33rd News and Documentary Emmy Awards were handed out last night in New York City. PBS led all networks with nine awards thanks to its documentary programming, while ABC and CBS News tied for seven awards each. NBC News took home three Emmys, CNN and CNN/I, Discovery Channel and HBO each took home two, with Nat Geo Channel, Science Channel, Showtime and The NY Times all taking home one Emmy.

Among the notable winners: ABC’s “Nightline” and CBS’ “60 Minutes” each took home five Emmys, leading their respective networks. ABC won Emmys for its Solyndra investigation, as well as Christiane Amanpour‘s interview with Gadhafi. Over the last three years, ABC News had won a combined four Emmys, so the seven this year are a big deal for the organization. CBS won an Emmy for its “Fast and Furious” investigative work. CNN won for “AC360″‘s bullying special and the network’s coverage of the Mubarak stepping down in Egypt. NBC won for its “Education Nation” summit and Bob Costas‘ devastating interview with Jerry Sandusky on “Rock Center.”

Univision’s Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas were given lifetime achievement awards.

NYP: Ann Curry Nixed From Emmy Sketch

The New York Post‘s Page Six reports that former “Today” co-anchor and current NBC news correspondent Ann Curry was supposed to be featured in a sketch at the Emmys on Sunday, but NBC executives nixed her appearance.

The sketch in question featured the cast of “Modern Family” dealing with their crazy kiddie co-star. In the version that aired, comedian Ken Jeong played a “replacement” for the child actor. The role was originally offered to Curry.

We’re told the sketch would have seen O’Neill telling Curry: “You’d be perfect . . . you’ve had some experience at this . . . ” with the camera pulling back to show the former “Today” co-host seated with him. “Ann was totally game,” a source said. But, “The idea went to NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke, who then kicked it to NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt, who nixed it.”

Letterman Extortionist Joe Halderman Won’t Attend Emmys

The CBS News producer who attempted to extort late night talk show host David Letterman may have been nominated for a News and Documentary Emmy Award, but it does not appear he will be present at the ceremony.

Joe Halderman, who was released from jail on good behavior earlier this month, tells The Hollywood Reporter (via his lawyer) that he will not be attending the News & Doc Emmys September 27. He was nominated for a “48 Hours Mystery” piece about the Amanda Knox trial.

“He’s not doing any interviews and just wants to return to a quiet and productive life,” his lawyer, Gerald Shargel said.

Halderman has expressed an interest in returning to TV news production, now that he is once again a free man.

Domo Arigato: MLB to Stream Games on YouTube Japan

Quick Hit: Major League Baseball has long held a tight grip on its video content online. Overseas, however, is a different story. In a breakthrough deal, YouTube Japan will stream all MLB games 36 hour after they air, as well as highlight packages from every game during the 2009 and 2010 season. Earlier this year YouTube announced a deal to stream live cricket matches from the Indian Premier League.

UNC to Hold 7:30 P.M. Press Conference

This story is going to get bigger before it disappears: UNC uncovered academic infractions and is holding a press conference Thursday night to address the issue.

A report from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill’s WTVD says multiple players on the football team are involved, with other sources placing the number as high as nine (or higher). ESPN’s Joe Schad believes the investigation centers around whether players “including standouts” had papers written by a former tutor.

Head coach Butch Davis previously coached at Miami and endured the wrath of the NCAA although it wasn’t his fault. His predecessor Dennis Erickson committed several violations and the team was banned from postseason. In late 2006, Davis came to a struggling UNC program and led them to bowl games in 2008 and 2009.
