Cable Network Ranker: Week of September 10

Without any political conventions, CNN and MSNBC fell back to earth a bit in the ratings last week, though they still performed better than most weeks this year.

Fox News was not only the top cable news channel for the week, but was the only news channel to effectively hold its ratings position, coming in at number three overall in total viewers in primetime behind only ESPN and USA Network. FNC averaged 2.36 million primetime viewers, and 1.33 million total day viewers.

MSNBC was 18th in primetime and 14th in total day, averaging 1.03 million and 585,000 viewers, respectively. CNN was 29th in primetime and 27th in total day with 636,000 and 447,000 viewers, respectively.

HLN was 43rd in primetime and 44th in total day, averaging 290,000 and 217,000 viewers, respectively. Current TV was 91st in primetime and 92nd in total day, averaging 35,000 and 25,000 viewers.

Among the business networks: CNBC was 56th in primetime and 49th in total day, averaging 195,000 and 166,000 viewers, respectively. Fox Business was 86th in primetime and 78th in total day, averaging 62,000 and 60,000 viewers, respectively. Bloomberg TV isn’t rated by Nielsen.

The full ranker is below.

Fox News Channel Pregnancies: Is there something in the water?

FNC contributor Rebbecca Diamond is pregnant. She was host of “Happy Hour” on FBN, which was canceled in June. Anchor for both FNC and WNYW, Heather Nauert, posted on her Facebook page that she is pregnant again. Her first child was born in October of last year. TVNewser learned in August that entertainment reporter Courtney Friel is pregnant. Reena Ninan, Middle-Eastern Correspondent, is pregnant with her first child.

The weather machine Janice Dean is pregnant with her second child. She recently tweeted: @janicedeanfox: “Felt the baby move this weekend! I have a feeling he’s going to be a kicker! ”

Fox News confirms all of the above pregnancies. And, I witnessed three pregnancies at the assignment desk during my time at FNC.

NBCU CEO Jeff Zucker’s Departure: How the Business Networks Covered It

Bloomberg, CNBC and Fox Business Network all covered the announcement that NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker would step down once Comcast completed its acquisition of the company.

Two of the networks delivered particularly interesting coverage: CNBC and FBN.

CNBC reported the news at almost the exact same time the New York Times posted its story this morning. Then later in the day, David Faber appeared, and was asked what Zucker’s legacy would be:

The growth of the cable networks, undoubtedly like our own. At the end of the day, in reporting of course on the Comcast transaction As I did for so many days for almost a year ago, when the speculation at least began, their focus was always on the cable networks owned by NBC Universal. There’s no doubt they grew enormously under the stewardship of Mr. Zucker. Whether it’s CNBC or Bravo or USA, many of those networks are producing prodigious amounts of cash flow.

On FBN, former CNBCer Charlie Gasparino (who was never turned down an opportunity to discuss his old network), talked about a possible change in reporting lines between NBC News president Steve Capus and CNBC chief Mark Hoffman:
