The Cable News Obsession

Columnist and New York magazine editor-at-large Frank Rich has strong feelings about a lot of things. TV news is one of them. In this week’s Media Beat interview, Rich tells PRNewser editor Tonya Garcia, “I think the worst influence can be cable news, particularly cable news getting obsessed, not with political stories, but with natural disaster, missing children, and driving all coverage of the national story off the air.”

After the jump, part I of the interview in which Rich talks about his role as executive producer of the HBO comedy “Veep.” “I think comedy, satire, and farce, which is also a little bit of Veep, heightens everything,” Rich says.

Roger Ailes Praises Rachel Maddow Book: ‘Drift is a book worth reading’

Rachel Maddow and Roger Ailes at a White House Christmas party in 2009

Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes is full of surprises these days. The latest: he’s encouraging people to read the new book by one of his ideological opposites: MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

Politico’s Dylan Byers <a href="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2012/03/roger-ailes-blurbs-for-rachel-maddow-116312.html"target="_blank">reports Ailes has written a book blurb supporting “Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power,” which comes out later this month.

People who like Rachel will love the book. People who don’t will get angry, but aggressive debate is good for America. Drift is a book worth reading.

The book’s Amazon <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Drift-Unmooring-American-Military-Power/dp/0307460983/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330879552&sr=8-1"target="_blank">page includes blurbs from Ailes as well as Tom Brokaw, Frank Rich, Glenn Greenwald and more.

NY Times Editor Bill Keller: Fox News Viewers ‘among the most cynical people on planet Earth’

New York Times executive editor Bill Keller had a few words about Fox News Channel and its regular viewers last night.

As The Cutline’s Joe Pompeo reports, Keller was asked a wide range of questions at a New York Press Club event, ranging from the Times’ upcoming paywall, the departure of Frank Rich, and yes, FNC:

“I think if you’re a regular viewer of Fox News, you’re among the most cynical people on planet Earth,” Keller snarled. “I cannot think of a more cynical slogan than ‘Fair and Balanced’ “

Maddow/Olbermann Invited to White House Chat with Obama, But Fox Isn’t a News Organization?

Here’s a curious turn in the White House vs. Fox News fight.

On Monday, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow were among several people who attended an off-the-record briefing with Pres. Obama at the White House. Sources tell us other attendees at the two-and-a-half hour chat included Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Gwen Ifill of PBS and Gloria Borger of CNN. Perhaps not surprisingly, no one from Fox News was in the room.

This fact quickly turned into ammunition for the folks at FOX. Last night on “Special Report,” Bret Baier revealed the information pointing out that opinion hosts from one channel were being invited to a briefing with the Commander-in-Chief, all the while Fox was declared not a news organization.

And it continued on Fox & Friends this morning, as the troika talked about the back-and-forth ABC News White House correspondent Jake Tapper had with press secretary Robert Gibbs in the morning off-camera gaggle yesterday.

[However, co-anchor Gretchen Carlson didn't have her facts correct when she said, "in this reporter gaggle was Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann who are opinion people over at MSNBC." Maddow and Olbermann were in the off-the-record briefing on Monday not the on-the-record gaggle on Tuesday.]

(h/t HotAir & JohnnyDollar)

Update: The White House has sent TVNewser the complete list of those who attended the off-the-record briefing Monday: Eugene Robinson, E.J. Dionne, Ron Brownstein, John Dickerson, Rachel Maddow, Frank Rich, Jerry Seib, Maureen Dowd, Keith Olbermann, Bob Herbert, Gloria Borger, and Gwen Ifill. Several members of the staff also attended.

Cramer “Uncomfortable Being in the Crosshairs,” Rush Tries to Help

CNBC’s Jim Cramer is responding to his critics in the media — from the left and right – from print, TV and radio — over his comments about the Obama administration priorities.

I’m uncomfortable being in the crosshairs of columnists and comedians I enjoy, and I find the embrace of Rush Limbaugh most certainly strange if not antithetical to many of my viewpoints.

Cramer also writes about his other “new allies” on the right:

Fred Barnes and Sean Hannity, don’t hold my left wing social view against me when they talk about my criticism of the president! I always love anyone from Fox on the team because they are fierce in their defense with much less gratuitous slamming.

On his show a short time ago, Limbaugh tried to help Cramer out, “I certainly mean this as assistance,” he said, adding:

Poor guy. His head’s about to explode…Jim Cramer is experiencing what I’ve been talking about and experiencing for two decades…Welcome to the club, Jim…For some of us Jim,
this is part of the day, this is part of our careers.

CNBC’s Past Three Weeks: “Moment in the Spotlight” or “Going Overboard”?

Over the last three weeks, CNBC and its on-air personalities have been a focus, both good and bad, from the White House to Wall Street.

“Whether the attention is positive or negative, it is certain that this tumultuous financial season is CNBC’s reason for being,” writes the New York Times’ Brian Stelter and Tim Arango, while noting some in the organization have begun referring to it as, “the recession network.”

“It has certainly received a lot more notoriety, and along with that a lot more audience,” says CNBC president Mark Hoffman.

But, what about the increasingly outspoken anchors? “Three CNBC employees, who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said that the role of opinion on the channel had been a subject of frequent discussion,” reports the Times.

Jon Friedman of Marketwatch writes, “CNBC seems to want, if not prefer, its on-air ‘talent’ to raise the theatrics level as high as it can go,” he writes.

And comparing the network to ESPN, he writes: “CNBC loses sight of the idea that the public takes investing, and the economy, much more seriously than sports fans debate baseball or football headlines.”

New York Times columnist Frank Rich wrote about the network in his column this weekend as well. Click continued to see his take…

CNN/TIME Politics ’08: Greenfield, Graydon and More

The CNN/TIME Politics ’08 conference kicked off yesterday with Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes saying, “There has never been and never will be a substitute for quality.”

TVNewser twittered the first panel, moderated by Campbell Brown, and featuring this line of from Vanity Fair’s Graydon Carter that got the biggest laughs (on trying to book Gore Vidal on TV): “They want him to talk about Marilyn Monroe, he wants to talk about James Monroe.”

The second panel, moderated by the New York Times’ Frank Rich, featured CBS’ Jeff Greenfield, journalist/author Peggy Noonan, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin and others. Greenfield brought up the way the journalist-politician trust has changed. He reminisced how Lyndon Johnson once said, “If I’ve lost Walter Cronkite, I’ve lost the country,” regarding Vietnam. “Who could you say that about today?” he asked.

Noonan used some descriptive language to talk TV news options. “If you want to take a warm bath in George Bush‘s greatness, you will go straight to Fox,” she said. “If you want to take a cold shower in ‘George Bush is the devil,’ you will go straight to (Keith) Olbermann.”

After the panel, Greenfield grabbed a few of the panelists, including moderator Rich (pictured) for a potential CBS package. We also turned the tables and interviewed Greenfield (after the jump).

Two final notes about the TVNewser twittered final panel, featuring a lively interview between Anderson Cooper and Lewis Black (and the audience). If there is a way to get video of Black’s total excoriating of an audience member who blamed big government for the country’s problems, we’ll search for it. Black later somewhat apologized, and said he only got so worked up because of something that happened earlier in the day. But it did leave Cooper slightly uncomfortable. “This isn’t awkward for me at all,” joked Cooper.

Also, an audience member asked the CNN anchor if he ever wanted to just scream his opinion about an issue he was covering. “The last thing anyone wants to hear is some overpaid, blow-dried news anchor giving their opinion,” Cooper said. “I think there’s enough of those already.”
