Morning Show Ratings: Week of June 23 & Q2

morningshowanchors2014“Good Morning America” wins for both the week of June 23 and the second quarter of 2014. The ABC morning show delivered its largest quarterly advantage over NBC’s “Today” in 22 years in total viewers and 21 years in the A25-54 demographic.

“CBS This Morning” was the only morning show to grow in total viewers for the quarter, +5% compared to Q2 2013. NBC (+1%) and ABC (+1%) were both flat. In the A25-54 demographic, ABC was the only show to grow, up +4% year-over-year. NBC was flat (-1%) and CBS was down -8%.

For the week of June 23, CBS up +8% in total viewers and down -5% in the demo compared to the same week last year. ABC was down -2% in total viewers and flat in the demo and NBC was down -7% and -10%, respectively.

The averages for the week of June 23, 2014:

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 4.945M / NBC: 4.301M / CBS: 2.887M
  • A25-54 viewers: ABC: 1.779M / NBC: 1.607M / CBS: 859K

The averages for Q2 2014:

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 5.542M / NBC: 4.761M / CBS: 3.053M

Morning Show Ratings: Week of May 19 and May Sweeps

morningshowanchors2014“Good Morning America” won in total viewers and the A25-54 demo for both the week of May 19 and the May sweeps period. As we told you earlier, “GMA” finished the month with its largest sweeps advantage in the demo in 20 years.

“CBS This Morning” posted its best total viewer-delivery in a May sweep since 1994. But compared to the year-ago sweep, only NBC’s “Today” was up in both ratings measurements. ABC was down in total viewers and up in the demo and CBS was up in total viewers and down in younger viewers.

For the week of May 19, ABC and NBC are both flat in total viewers and up in the A25-54 demographic compared to the same week last year. CBS is up in total viewers, but down in the demo.

The averages for the week of May 19, 2014:

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 5.653M / NBC: 4.850M / CBS: 3.099M
  • A25-54 viewers: ABC: 2.135M / NBC: 2.012M / CBS: 954,000

The averages for May sweeps:

Weekend Morning Show Ratings: May Sweeps

“Good Morning America Saturday” and “CBS Sunday Morning” were the victorious weekend morning shows for the just-completed May sweeps period.

On Saturdays, “GMA” won in both total viewers and the A25-54 demo, winning its fifth consecutive sweep in total viewers and fourth consecutive sweep in the A25-54 demographic. The Saturday edition of “CBS This Morning” also had a strong month, posting its best May sweeps delivery in total viewers since 2006. Compared to the year-ago sweep, “GMA” was the only show to grow in both ratings measurements. “CBS This Morning” was up in total viewers but down in the demo and NBC’s “Today” was down across the board.

On Sundays, “CBS Sunday Morning” reigns supreme as usual, topping the Sunday editions of “Good Morning America” and “Today” in both total viewers and the A25-54 demo. “Good Morning Amerca” was second, posting its largest-ever sweeps margins over “Today” in both ratings measurements.

Morning Show Ratings: Week of April 28

morningshowanchors2014The three morning shows were up in viewership last week vs. the same week last year, while “CBS This Morning” was the only show to lose ground in the A25-54 demo, down -7%.

NBC’s “Today” show, which trailed #1 “GMA” by 729,000 total viewers, was up +8% in viewers and +4% in the younger demo. In another younger demo, the A18-49 rating, “Today” has been No. 1 for 45 weeks. “CBS This Morning” was also up +8% in total viewers.

“Good Morning America” was up +3% in viewers and +6% in the demo year-over-year. The ABC morning show has now won in total viewers for 92 of the last 96 weeks.

The averages for the week of April 28, 2014:

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 5.773M / NBC: 5.044M / CBS: 3.263M
  • A25-54 viewers: ABC: 2.164M / NBC: 2.018M / CBS: 1.025

morningshowanchors2014“Good Morning America” is the top morning show once again, and wins in the A25-54 demo by its widest margin in three months; it beat second-place “Today” by 279,000 demo viewers, its largest victory since the week of 12/30/13.

“GMA” also showed the most growth in total and demo viewers compared to the same week last year, up +2% and +8%, respectively. “Today’s” seven consecutive months of growth in total and demo viewers is its highest rate of growth in those categories since 1997 and 2001, respectively.

NBC’s “Today” was flat in total viewers year-over-year and down slightly in demo viewers, down -2%. “CBS This Morning” was also flat year-over-year in total viewers, and lost ground in the demo, down -8%.

The averages for the week of April 7, 2014:

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 5.617M / NBC: 4.856M / CBS: 3.041M
  • A25-54 viewers: ABC: 2.212M / NBC: 1.933M / CBS: 956,000

Morning Show Ratings: Week of March 24 and Q1 2014

“Good Morning America” wins again for the week of March 24, beating #2 “Today” in total viewers by 488,000 viewers and 87,000 demo viewers.

Compared to the same week last year, “Today” saw the most gains in total viewers, up +17%, while “GMA” had the most year-over-year demo growth, up +21%. The NBC broadcast was also up +19% in the demo compared to last year, while “GMA” was up +12% in total viewers. Third place “CBS This Morning” was up in total and demo viewers, +12% and +3%, respectively.

“GMA” also wins its sixth quarter in a row in both total and demo viewers. Its 129,000 viewer demo victory over “Today” was its largest advantage in nearly 20 years.

“Today” showed the most year-over-year quarterly growth in total viewers, up +14%. The NBC broadcast aired from the Sochi Olympics throughout February, beating “GMA” in both total and demo viewers for two weeks. “GMA” saw the biggest quarterly demo gains compared to last year, up +15%. Third place “CBS This Morning” saw gains in total viewers, up +11%, but lost ground in the demo, down -2%.

The averages for the week of March 24:

‘GMA’ Unveils Social Media ‘Nerve Center’

ABC’s “Good Morning America” this morning unveiled Social Square, a new digital studio that will be the show’s social media “nerve center.”

The studio, which is an addition to the current “GMA” studio in Times Square, features Samsung monitors and tablets that feature Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+ and Spotify components. In addition to being used throughout the show, Social Square will also be the home of “GMA Live,” the online broadcast that airs at 9amET on the show’s website.

The unveiling of Social Square comes six months after NBC’s “Today” show debuted its own social media studio, the Orange Room. During a tour of the studio after the show this morning, ABC News senior editor of social media Andrew Springer told TVNewser the planning process for the “GMA” studio was underway before “Today” unveiled its version. Weekend Morning Show Ratings: February Sweeps

“Good Morning America Saturday” and “CBS Sunday Morning” were the victorious weekend morning shows for the just-completed February sweeps period.

The Saturday edition of ABC’s “Good Morning America” won its first-ever February sweep, delivering its best-ever sweeps performance in both total viewers and the A25-54 demographic. It was also the best February sweep since 2007 for the Saturday edition of “CBS This Morning.” It should be noted that “Weekend Today” had several shortened shows in February due to NBC’s coverage of the Olympics.

On Sunday mornings, NBC’s “Today” held on to the number two spot behind “CBS This Morning,” which as usual dominated the competition. “Sunday Morning” averaged 6.2 million viewers, its best February sweep since 1994 and only the second February sweeps period since the advent of people meters that the show has delivered more than 6 million viewers.

Morning Show Ratings: Week of February 3

MorningShowNEWSplit wins for the morning shows last week. NBC’s “Today” show wins among younger viewers, which hasn’t happened since mid-December, edging ABC’s “Good Morning America” by +18,000 viewers. “GMA” was the most-watched morning show with a +158,000 viewer advantage, stretching its winning streak to 77 weeks.

With the run-up to the Sochi Olympics, NBC saw the most year-to-year growth in both total viewers and the younger demo: up +22% and +20%, respectively.

“GMA” was also up year-over-year, +11% in total viewers and +16% in the demo. A mixed bag for “CBS This Morning” compared to the same week last year: the show is  up +8% in total viewers, but down -4% in the demo.

The averages for the week of February 3, 2014:

  • Total Viewers: ABC: 5.976M / NBC: 5.818M / CBS: 3.352M

How Two Former TV Producers Created Their Own Lifestyle Brand

As part of Mediabistro’s Profit From Your Passion series, we spoke to media moguls Melissa Musen Gerstein and Denise Albert, who’ve spent most of their careers in the TV business.

Albert’s first job out of college was at Inside Edition; she’s also done on-air reporting for local stations and the NBA, and eventually became a producer for Good Morning America. Meanwhile, Gerstein has worked as a producer on various shows, from Anderson Cooper 360 to The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch. When the two met, they realized they had a similar desire to create a parenting-based lifestyle company. The result is The Moms brand, which started as a syndicated newspaper column, got picked up as a show for NBC and now includes a weekly show on Sirius XM Radio. Here’s how it all went down, according to Albert:

[When Melissa and I met] I was pregnant with my first child, and I felt like there was conversation missing in the parenting world. I wanted to have very smart conversations, and not talk about being pregnant, and not necessarily talk about how many diapers or poops or bottles my kid was going to have during the day. And so I had this idea to really do what I know and love, which is television and journalism, but in the parenting space. Melissa and I were connected through another person and we were told, ‘Oh, you guys have the same idea.’ And so that’s how we originally began as Moms in the City. We wanted something where we could have this parenting conversation in a forum that we knew — television.
