Indiana University head coach Tom Crean will join CBS Sports’ and Turner Sports’ coverage of the 2011 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship as a guest analyst.

Crean will work in the Atlanta studio alongside host Matt Winer and analysts Seth Davis and Steve Smith during the First and Second Round games on Wednesday-Friday, which will air across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV.

Nothing Says March Madness Like Kings Of Leon

Starting on Friday, CBS and Turner Sports will roll out a multiplatform campaign featuring the rock band Kings of Leon in order to promote the NCAA Tournament.

Tournament footage will be weaved into the band’s video, “The Immortals,” and shown on 5,800 movie screens across the country until March 17.

“We are proud to be working with Kings of Leon throughout the tournament and using their powerful song “The Immortals” as a theme of our marketing campaign and coverage,” said Christina Miller, senior vice president of Turner Sports strategy, marketing and programming. “Our extensive multi-platform campaign will help communicate to fans the exciting new changes to the tournament’s coverage, particularly that every single game will be broadcast live nationally for the first time ever, allowing fans to choose which games they want to watch.” continued…

Look, it’s very simple. When you’re paid to do a job, or (in the case of some of NASCAR’s “citizen journalist” unpaid bloggers) when you’re invited into the media center, your loyalties are to that job first and foremost. Can you be a fan and still do the job? Of course. It’s helpful, in fact, to give you insight into the mind and heart of the fans, the people who expect you to bring them the news and accounts of the day. But there’s passion and there’s professionalism, and if you have your priorities as a journalist in order, never the twain shall mix.

Major League Soccer Hires Chief Marketing Officer

J. Russell Findlay will join Major League Soccer and Soccer United Marketing as chief marketing officer.

He previously served as vice president of marketing for Town Sports International and spent 20 years with PepsiCo and Unilever before taking that position.

“I am pleased to welcome Russ Findlay to the MLS family,” league commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. “Russ has 20 years of strategic brand marketing and sales experience and brings to our League and sport a great passion for the game. His expertise in understanding consumers and knowing how to reach them is an excellent fit for our business.”

Athletes, Citizenship, and The New York Times

In Sunday’s The New York Times, Alison Gregor tells the tale of Erick De Leon, a Mexican-born, Detroit-based boxer who’s racing to get his citizenship so he can compete for the United States in the 2012 Olympics. The 18 year old moved here 12 years ago, but his parents never went through the citizenship process because of the hassle. This is a problem now that the hopes of USA Boxing rest upon De Leon’s shoulders.

The lack of citizenship did not hold back De Leon as he won the national Police Athletic League championship in the 132-pound weight class in 2009, along with the national Golden Gloves titles in 2009 and 2010. But in an Olympic qualifying year, noncitizens are prohibited from fighting in national championships.

De Leon hasn’t lost to anyone in the U.S. in his weight class for three years, and USA Boxing is racing to help him expedite the citizenship process. If he can’t get his papers by the end of the year, he could represent Mexico during the London Olympics. continued…

We all have that one celebrity/athlete/media personality that you wish would follow you on Twitter.

But would you actually spend money in order to get that person to follow you?

Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White is auctioning off a follow on Twitter, with all the proceeds going to aHomeInHaiti.org.

Other sports celebrities taking part in the auction include Jim Rome, Michael Strahan, Rick Fox, Antonio Cromartie, and Pete Carroll.

Here’s the rundown of the rules:

Dana White will follow you on Twitter for a minimum of 90 days, will retweet one of your tweets and will send out a tweet including your @twitterhandle.

It will be at the celebrity’s discretion to continue following the winner beyond 90 days.

Misuse of talent connection on Twitter may result in revocation of the Follow at the Talent’s discretion. Respect for the Talent is expected at all times. The Talent has the right to refuse fulfillment of the package based on already established relationships, sponsorships or personal preference.
