Previously rumored and now official, CNN is acquiring free iPad news app Zite, which organizes news content into a magazine-like format for users of the Apple tablet.

Zite takes user preferences into account in aggregating the content it displays, “getting smarter as it’s used.” It will remain a separate, stand-alone business.

Zite CEO Mark Johnson will continue to oversee day-to-day operations from the company’s headquarters in San Francisco, reporting to CNN Digital general manager K.C. Estenson. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed but AllThingsD reports CNN paid between $20 and $25 million dollars.

The iPad section of the Apple App Store is now Fair and Balanced, as Fox News Channel rolled out Fox News for iPad today, marking the first tablet-exclusive app for the cable news network.

Features boasted by Fox News for iPad include live streaming, breaking news alerts, Fox News Radio audio, slide shows, videos, and the ability to share content via Facebook, Twitter, and email.

The free app also offers Happening Now — named for a daytime show on the channel — which allows users to swipe for a quick peek at latest news. ExxonMobil is the launch sponsor for Fox News for iPad, and its advertising appears throughout the app.

NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams has joined the iPad app fray, releasing a video-centric app via the App Store.

The app allows users to view the entire Nightly News broadcast, individual segments, and exclusive online video, as well as to read Williams’ blog. It also offers transcripts, related slideshows, and top headlines. And users can post videos and comments directly to their Facebook and Twitter accounts via the app.

Anchor and managing editor Williams said:

This app is the equivalent of our entire newsroom in an iPad. Everywhere we go, everything we do is right here. We’re on TV, DVR, the Web, and now the iPad app adds another front that gives Nightly News complete, on-demand portability.

Viewers of ABC’s Good Morning America can vote on which segments they liked the best while the show is on the air, using their iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Android devices, following the release of the new Good Morning America app.

Users following along with GMA can see real-time voting results, compare their choices with others, and view video clips from GMA via the free app.

Senior executive producer James Goldston said:

The new GMA app is part of ABC News Digital’s ongoing commitment to provide viewers innovative and interactive ways to be a part of the broadcast. Now viewers can be a part of the story and watch Good Morning America wherever and whenever they want.

NBC News vice president of specials and digital media Mark Lukasiewicz touted the network’s The Royal Wedding by NBC News app, as well as Twitter account @RoyalWedding, in an internal email.

The app is available for the iPad, iPhone, and Android.

Lukasiewicz also mentioned a tie-in with entertainment-based social network GetGlue, as well as a special Facebook event. From his email:
