As the sun set over the Hudson River and the High Line park, guests sipped wine and nibbled on hummus, cheese and skewers of shrimp and scallops. NY1 traffic anchor Jamie Shupak, Stelter’s girlfriend, organized the affair.

“Matt Lauer and Ann Curry send their regrets,” Stelter quipped in his remarks. Indeed, NBC’s “Today” was not represented at the party, though there were plenty of notable TV news attendees.

ABC News seemed to have the largest contingent, led by president Ben Sherwood, and joined by senior VP of content and development James Goldston, and senior VP of communications Jeffrey Schneider. CBS News was represented by chairman Jeff Fager and “CBS This Morning” co-host Charlie Rose (pictured below). NY1′s morning news anchor Pat Kiernan was there, as was CNN “Piers Morgan Live” EP (and former “Today” EP) Jonathan Wald. Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley, New York Post publisher Jesse Angelo and Gawker founder Nick Denton were all spotted in the crowd.

• Morgan Hertzan is joining ABC News as VP of a new non-fiction content development business for ABC’s cable, broadcast and digital operations. He’ll report to James Goldston. Hertzan joins ABC News from Plum TV. Before that, he was an SVP at NBC and GM of LX.TV.

• “Tell Me the Truth, Doctor,” out later this month, is the first book from ABC’s health and medical editor Dr. Richard Besser. Dr. Besser delivers practical answers to the questions he hears every day empowering readers with vital information.

• Today marks the 50th anniversary of ABC’s “General Hospital,” one of the remaining daytime dramas still on the air. Members of the cast rang the opening bell at the NYSE this morning, which got a mention on the cable news networks.

There are strong internal candidates, some of whom, it has been announced by Fili-Krushel, will take on additional duties. Alex Wallace (above, right), who oversees “Today,” and “Rock Center” will now oversee “Nightly News,” where she was once EP. Wallace, who’s been with NBC since 2005, would be the first female news president after nine men have held the job since 1968.

Phil Griffin will likely be considered for the job. As president of MSNBC for the last 4 and a half years he has given the network an identity and boosted ratings, consistently topping CNN — a network his close friend Jeff Zucker now runs. A front office and internal concern would be the progressive programming on the network, often not in line with NBC News standards. Mark Hoffman, president of CNBC, cannot be ruled out. Nor can Capus’ deputy, Antoine Sanfuentes, (above, left) who will run day-to-day in the interim.

“Good Morning America” anchors Sam Champion, Lara Spencer, and Josh Elliott hosted a gallery opening in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan last night showing the works of Champion’s fiance Rubem Robierb.

Among the guests: “Live” co-host and former New York Giant Michael Strahan, MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts, ABC News SVPs James Goldston and Barbara Fedida and “GMA” Senior EP Tom Cibrowski and super agent Olivia Metzger.

Cibrowski told us he called it an early night on Tuesday. “Once I saw the 10 O’clock states come in, I kind of knew what to expect,” Cibrowski tells TVNewser. “And I had to be up in a few hours to get ["GMA"] on.”

Back at Times Square Studios, the lights had not yet gone out. Elliott told us he felt slightly guilty about the power outage which happened just before 11pmET. Stationed outside the studio in a 30 degree chill, the electricity used to light and heat his live shots may have caused the outage inside. “It’s completely dark,” recounted Elliott as he looked up to the second floor of the studio. “And I hear in my ear, ‘We’ve lost the lights, we need you to stretch.’” ABC elections EP Marc Burstein kept the network on the air by utilizing Elliot, reporters in the field and shuffling Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos in another part of the studio until the lights came back.

Back to last night’s show, Champion couldn’t have been more proud of Robierb, while facing the prospect that many of the works would soon have new homes. “I hope no one buys that one,” said Champion of the $10,000 lithograph at the front of the gallery. “That one’s been in the living room.”

A portion of the proceeds from last night’s sales from The Bullet-Fly Effect will be donated to the American Red Cross.

The crew checks the studio. The audience checks their bags. Someone produces a volleyball, which Elliott, a huge soccer fan, dismisses. The commercial break ends, and Spencer and Elliott’s goodbyes go off without a hitch, soccer ball or not.

It was a much smoother ending for the third outing of the limited run show than it was for the first, a sign that the “GAA” team is quickly finding a rhythm.

“I feel pretty happy. It’s got a great spirit,” executive producer James Goldston told TVNewser after Wednesday’s show. “These things, they take time to bed in. But we’re here for nine weeks, and we’re going to have fun with it.”

One major difference between “Good Morning America” and its afternoon counterpart is the studio audience: about 100 people, the majority of them female. Throughout the show, the group is encouraged to cheer if they like something and boo if they don’t, which Elliott told TVNewser contributes to the fresher, more energetic feel that “GAA” is going for.

“The audience is a phenomenal drug,” he said.

More than 200 ABC News staffers packed the 5th floor newsroom this morning for a toast and celebration of “Good Morning America” breaking the “Today” show’s winning streak that lasted 16 years and 16 weeks.

ABC News president Ben Sherwood, who was executive producer of the show when it came within striking distance in 2005, gave two toasts: first to his colleagues at NBC, acknowledging the streak, and a second to his team and all those who came before, including former longtime executives David Westin, Jim Murphy, Phyllis McGrady and Shelley Ross, who was EP of the show for more than five years, beginning in 1999.

One longtime ABCNewser emailed, “The energy in the building is electric.” Sherwood, who first joined ABC News in 1989 talked about how before the streak, “We’d win a week, they’d win a week, then we’d win.” The back-and-forth ended on Dec. 11, 1995 when “Today” began its until-now unbroken 852-week winning streak. Sherwood himself jumped to NBC News in 1997 working on “Nightly News” before returning to ABC to oversee “GMA” in 2004. Sherwood talked about how many of the the show’s current staffers were in junior high or high school in 1995. News anchor Josh Elliott had just graduated from college.

Diane Sawyer and Chris Cuomo, former anchors on the show were in attendance while the current team of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Sam Champion, Lara Spencer and Elliott said a few words.

James Goldston who oversees the show as SVP, as well as Senior EP Tom Cibrowski also spoke. There was a lot of hugging, an insider tells us.

In his new role Goldston will oversee all ABC News programs, as well as its EPs. He will also develop new programs for the network.

Goldston has steadily risen through the ranks at ABC since joining the network in 2004. Goldston, a former producer for ITV, is credited with breathing new life into the late night news program “Nightline,” and was rewarded with expanded oversight of other ABC News programming, including “This Week,” before adding “GMA” to his résumé.

• Broadcasting & Cable reports ABC News is considering elevating “Good Morning America” senior executive producer James Goldston to “a more wide-ranging role.” The personnel change has no immediate timeline, according to B&C, but sources expect “GMA” EP Tom Cibrowski to take over for Goldston.
• FBN’s Liz Claman says she got to the anchor desk by demanding it (as the Fox Business mantra goes). “I was getting passed up to be an anchor,” Claman tells Boston.com, “and one day I stormed into my boss’ office, and I made a case to him that I should be an anchor.”
• With the help of Deepak Chopra, Dylan Ratigan has turned over a new leaf, the MSNBC host tells The Hill. “I was the angriest man in cable up to about a year ago,” Ratigan says. “I’ve long since moved to a much happier lifestyle.”

Earlier, GMA also began copying a number of signature “Today” segments, such as summer concert series. And last month, Mr. Goldston and the network moved GMA to a new set on the first floor of ABC’s Times Square studio so that anchors could more easily venture outdoors.

“Little by little, ‘Good Morning America’ has come to replicate what has always been the ‘Today’ show’s secret sauce—the ensemble,” says Victor Neufeld, a former executive producer of CBS’s “Early Show” and ABC’s “20/20.” “The chemistry is working,” he says, and GMA has become a “Today” alternative, “like Coke and Pepsi.”
