Jay Carney, Even on Bad Days, Really Appreciates the Media

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has had a rough few days of daily briefings… what with Benghazi, the IRS and AP phone taps on the minds of that pesky press corps. So today, Carney, who used to be “one of them,” opened today’s briefing with the many faces of Jay Carney (via Washington Post), from troubled, to stern, to grim, to bemused.

Via @JonKarl:

Meanwhile, Politico has put together a video of Carney appreciating, endlessly, the press corps’ questions.

Robert Gibbs Joins MSNBC/NBC News

Former press secretary Robert Gibbs made his debut as an MSNBC/NBC News political contributor ahead of his former boss’s State of the Union address last night. He was back on this morning on “Morning Joe.” Gibbs was Pres. Obama’s press secretary from 2009-2011.

He follows in a long line of former press secretaries who’ve made the leap to TV news, including Geroge W. Bush press secretaries Dana Perino, a co-host of FNC’s “The Five,” and Tony Snow, who was with Fox News before joining the White House and with CNN after. Bill Clinton‘s press secretary Dee Dee Myers (1993-94) was the host of “Equal Time” on CNBC, George Stephanopoulos‘s short run as Press Secretary before Myers in 1993 would lead to an association with ABC News that’s lasted 17 years. He’s now the co-host of “GMA” and host of “This Week.” Joe Lockhart (1998-2000) had stints with ABC and CNN.

Going back even further, Bill Moyers was LBJ’s press secretary in 1965-66. He has hosted various shows on PBS over the years.

Current Press Secretary Jay Carney did the reverse. He was a journalist with TIME for 20 years before joining the White House in 2009.

White House Files Formal Response to Piers Morgan Petition

The White House has filed a formal response to the petition that wanted CNN host Piers Morgan to be deported back to his native Great Britain. More than 100,000 people signed the petition, which was filed after Morgan became outspoken regarding his support of gun control after the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

In a comment posted on the White House petitions website, spokesperson Jay Carney says “Let’s not let arguments over the Constitution’s Second Amendment violate the spirit of its First.”

Let’s not let arguments over the Constitution’s Second Amendment violate the spirit of its First. President Obama believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. However, the Constitution not only guarantees an individual right to bear arms, but also enshrines the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press — fundamental principles that are essential to our democracy. Americans may disagree on matters of public policy and express those disagreements vigorously, but no one should be punished by the government simply because he or she expressed a view on the Second Amendment — or any other matter of public concern.

Ed Henry: ‘So Many People Who Criticize Fox News Don’t Watch Fox News’

The 2012 election is a new experience for veteran journalist Ed Henry: it’s his first as a reporter for Fox News.

For starters, the former CNN’er says he’s speaking to a larger audience. It’s “gratifying how many Americans are watching. Fox has connected.”

TVNewser caught up with FNC’s Chief White House correspondent today in Chicago, where he is preparing for the final night of a long campaign.

Henry joined Fox News during the summer of 2011, but says his journalistic perspective has remained the same. Reporters “should be tough but fair” to all public officials, “and that’s what I try to do.”

He says that while at CNN, his questioning drew criticism from Bush administration officials, and that he never got a sit-down interview with the President as a result. More recently, his queries have drawn ire from White House press secretary Jay Carney and from President Obama himself.

“I do not take it personally,” he says of the slings and arrows, “because I realize it’s just part of the job. An occupational hazard, I guess. You ask a tough question of the president, you throw him a hardball, you might get one back. I’m fine with that.”

He draws a distinction between the news side and the opinion side of FNC programming. Henry tells of bumping into Sean Hannity at a news event and joking with him to “‘stay away from me! I’m not taking a picture with you!’

Bonus video: Henry talks about how he uses Twitter on the campaign trail

“I like him personally,” says Henry. “But he’s got his thing at night. I’ve got my thing during the day.”

The Fox News brand often is unfairly judged, he believes. “So many people who criticize Fox News don’t watch Fox News.”

continued…

ABC Reporter, Obama Press Team Member Tie the Knot

Matthew Jaffe, (left) a reporter for ABC News and Univision who most recently covered the GOP primary, has married a member of Pres. Obama’s press team.

Jaffe married Katie Hogan, the president’s deputy press secretary, in Lake Geneva, WI over the weekend. Hogan and Jaffe are based in Chicago, which is home to the president’s re-election campaign headquarters.

ABC tells us Jaffe’s been reassigned to general news and is no longer covering politics. He had been focusing on the Latino vote in November’s election. Fluent in Spanish, he’s reported for Univision’s morning show and both the English and Spanish language Univision websites, as well as ABC News Radio and ABCNews.com.

This is the second ABCer to be hitched to an Obama press team official. ABC News correspondent Claire Shipman is married to President Obama’s press secretary Jay Carney. Also, former “ABC This Week” executive producer Ian Cameron is married to Susan Rice, Pres. Obama’s Ambassador to the United Nations.

The P.M. Ticker: Cramer, Wagner, Henry

Is Cramer to blame for the Facebook IPO? While Morgan Stanley is getting the brunt of it, the firm is blaming CNBC for “engaging in some pre-IPO hyping of their own.”

FNC’s Ed Henry and press secretary Jay Carney went all fast and furious at the White House briefing today. Carney got a little short with Henry at one point when discussing the Fast & Furious operation : “As you, I think — perhaps more than others given the interest in this at your network — knows the administration, principally the Department of Justice, has cooperated extensively with Congressional investigators, provided extensive documentation.” WATCH:

Jake Tapper to Jay Carney: ‘You Want Aggressive Journalism, Just Not in the United States’

At the White House press briefing Wednesday, Jake Tapper asked press secretary Jay Carney why the Obama Administration champions aggressive journalism abroad, but not here in the U.S.

Referring to the recent deaths of journalists in Syria, Tapper said, “The White House keeps praising these journalists … How does that square with the fact that this administration has been so aggressively trying to stop aggressive journalism in the United States by using the Espionage Act to take whistleblowers to court?”

Carney, a former journalist himself who is married to Tapper’s ABC colleague Claire Shipman, answered: “As somebody who knew both Anthony [Shadid] and Marie [Colvin] I particularly appreciate what they did to bring that story to the American people. As for other cases … divulging that kind of information is a serious issue.” Watch:

Dick Cheney on… MSNBC?

Viewers of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” could have been forgiven for thinking that they may not have been completely awake this morning. Former Vice President Dick Cheney appeared line in-studio for a lengthy interview on the program, a favorite among Washington’s wonk set.

The interview itself was cordial:

White House v. Fox News: All Calm Today

All was calm at this morning’s White House press briefing between Jay Carney, the president’s spokesman and Ed Henry the new chief White House correspondent for Fox News.

After two days of verbal jabs, including Carney saying to Henry yesterday, “I know you’re creating a thing here for Fox,” things were kept on topic this morning. Carney even said to Henry, “I appreciate the question,” when the Fox News correspondent asked what Pres. Obama was willing to put on the table “in the final hours” of the debt ceiling debate.

Henry’s colleague, Greta Van Susteren wrote on GretaWire last night that the White House needs to “give it a rest.”

I am actually surprised the White House Press Secretary acted that way to Ed. In his “former life” Jay Carney was a journalist and he knows the job is to get answers. This was a cheap shot.

Jay Carney to Ed Henry: ‘I know you’re creating a thing here for Fox’

At today’s White House Briefing, Fox News correspondent Ed Henry got into it — on his third day with Fox News — with Press Secretary Jay Carney. Henry was pressing Carney about the president’s debt reduction plan and making it public to the Congressional Budget Office.

“I know you’re creating a thing here for Fox,” jabbed Carney, as members in the briefing room groaned and chuckled. “That’s not what I’m doing and you know better than that,” Henry shot back.

Cablers Welcome New White House Press Secretary Jay Carney

This afternoon marked Jay Carney‘s first White House press briefing as President Barack Obama‘s new Press Secretary.

All three cable news channels carried at least part of it live, with the shootings of ICE agents in Mexico the top subject matter.

“The Lesson for Women is That It’s OK if Everybody Doesn’t Like You”

Gail Shister
TVNewser Columnist

Call 911. There’s a network correspondent who wants less face time.

“People think you’re insane in this business if you don’t want to be on TV all the time,” says ABC’s Claire Shipman. “The more you’re on, the more important you are. I should be panicked when I’m not on every day. Actually, I’m relieved.”

Shipman, 46, “Good Morning America’s” senior national correspondent, happily cut back to part-time status in the fall as part of her new contract. She appears once or twice a week — at a lower salary, of course.

“It’s been a very smooth adjustment,” she says. “I’m wired this way.” In this economy, so is ABC. “They’re happy to save some money and still have me on the air.”

Shipman is practicing what she preaches in her new book, “Womenomics: Write Your Own Rules for Success,” coauthored by the BBC’s Katty Kay. Their message: Females have far more power in the workplace than they realize, and they can use it to get the life they want.

Network TV is not your typical workplace, Shipman concedes. For starters, there’s the unpredictable travel. With two young children — Hugo, 7, and Della, 4 – she became increasingly resistant to that part of the job.

“I kept having these discussions, ‘Why are you so difficult, Claire?’” she says. “I told them I wasn’t cut out like other reporters. I think they got it. The lesson for women is that it’s OK if everybody doesn’t like you. They need to like your work.”

What Does Jay Carney’s Move Mean For ABC’s Claire Shipman?

The news that Time’s Washington bureau chief Jay Carney is leaving the magazine to become Vice President-elect Joe Biden‘s communications director will also have an impact on Carney’s wife, ABC News national correspondent Claire Shipman.

ABC News SVP of communications Jeffrey Schneider tells TVNewser, “It’s something we’ve obviously given a lot of thought to. We will not assign Claire to anything that would create even the perception of a conflict of interest.”

Shipman has been Good Morning America’s senior national correspondent since 2001. Before ABC, Shipman was NBC’s White House correspondent. She joined NBC News in 1997. Prior to NBC, Shipman spent 10 years at CNN in both Washington and Moscow.

“There are a lot of power couples in Washington who very successfully navigate these issues,” Schneider says. “We expect Claire and Jay will be able to do that. Obviously, we can’t have any influence over the spouses of the people who work for us and the jobs they take, but we can be mindful of the assignments we give to the people who do work for us.”

Chuck Todd’s Alarming Interview

Chuck Todd interviewed Politico’s Roger Simon and Time Magazine’s Jay Carney during the NoonET hour of MSNBC this afternoon. But Simon had some added distraction on his end — a fire alarm going off for the duration of the interview. “Looks like John Harris wants to make sure we all know when Politico’s ready to call a state,” joked Todd. “I’m very impressed with that mechanism.”
