A Kiss Before Flying. Jane Velez-Mitchell Has No ‘Issues’ at NLGJA Fundraiser

Actual news got in the way of last night’s annual New York fundraiser for the journalism group NLGJA. Soledad O’Brien, who was to co-host with her HLN colleague Jane Velez-Mitchell, couldn’t as she moderated CNN’s Trayvon Martin town hall which airs tonight.

Don Lemon jetted up from Atlanta to co-host with Velez-Mitchell, who mixed and mingled before making a beeline for Time Warner Center herself to participate in the town hall.

Velez-Mitchell made the biggest splash of the night when, during her welcome remarks to the crowd, she pulled her girlfriend on stage and planted a big kiss on her. “I won’t be doing that!” Lemon joked. “Ben doesn’t like that kind of thing,” he said glancing over to his partner, Ben Tinker, who is a producer in CNN’s medical unit.

CNN managing editor Mark Whitaker talked about his network’s commitment to diversity in the ranks and on the air. CNN was the lead sponsor for the event which was held at the Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams showroom in SoHo.

Also spotted in the crowd: NBC News VP Alex Wallace, former “Today” show co-anchor Meredith Vieira, “CBS This Morning” co-host Erica Hill, MSNBC’s Willie Geist, former MSNBC anchor Contessa Brewer and Fox News meteorologist Rick Reichmuth.

We chatted with FBN’s Gerri Willis who told us she has a new appreciation for the work of the Supreme Court after anchoring her show from Washington during oral arguments on the health care law. On “John King, USA,” last night Iowa Caucus runner-up Rick Santorum said he and his wife were watching CNN’s Election coverage after his speech – early Wednesday morning. The one-time Fox News analyst told King how he and his wife ended their late night: “I’ll admit, we watched CNN until you guys. I was listening to the… your package you had before, Jeanne Moos‘ package. And I was reliving it, because I was watching that late at night and enjoying the coverage. So, yes, we were just sitting there watching it and she eventually just fell asleep watching it. And that was — that was sort of the end of our evening.”

Santorum has a fan in News Corp. Chairman & CEO Rupert Murdoch who, on New Year’s Day Tweeted, “Good to see [S]antorum surging in Iowa. Regardless of policies, all debates showed principles, consistency and humility like no other.” Wednesday morning, Murdoch added, “Well, well! Values DO count. Santorum result pretty amazing. Policy very similar to Reagan. Now start to sound like him.”

CNN Continues to Milk Christine O’Donnell Walkout

Former Republican Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell walked out on CNN host Piers Morgan Wednesday night, and the channel is still talking about it two days later.

CNN will replay the interview on “Piers Morgan Tonight” this evening, as seen on promos running throughout the day (see the photo right). In addition, the channel continues to run segments on the walkout during its news programs, like the one below on the “Art of the Walkout” from Jeanne Moos.

Tonight, Morgan will discuss the walkout with Time TV critic James Poniewozik.

Update: “PMT” EP Jonathan Wald takes to Twitter to note that MSNBC and Fox News have also been “covering” the walkout as well. So take note cable news guests: if you want lots of free publicity to shill your book/movie/political campaign, be sure to insult the anchor interviewing you.

How Mark Halperin was Reported on Cable News

Mark Halperin‘s calling the president “a dick” on MSNBC yesterday made news on a couple other networks.

CNN reported his utterance, apology and suspension at least six times yesterday including a piece from Jeanne Moos during “The Situation Room.” MSNBC (beyond the original story) reported it once, around 10:50am yesterday; Fox News reported the story twice yesterday and Fox Business reported it this morning on Stuart Varney‘s show.

Meanwhile, Jon Stewart‘s take had less to do with the vulgarity and more about “show regular Willie Geist‘s disapproving glare.”

Jeanne Moos Celebrates 30 Years at CNN

CNN’s Jeanne Moos celebrated 30 years at the cable news channel yesterday.

CNN New York bureau chief Darius Walker read a note from CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton, and presented Moos with a red velvet cake, Twizzlers and flowers.

During her 30 years at CNN, Moos has covered political corruption at the U.N., the Gulf War, and the events in Tiananmen Square, among many other subjects.

CNN’s Jeanne Moos: ‘I Can’t Look at the News Without Thinking Funny’

CNN correspondent Jeanne Moos gets profiled by Marisa Guthrie in this week’s issue of Broadcasting & Cable.

Moos, who specializes in quirky and offbeat stories, recalls how she came up through the reporting ranks the traditional way, via local television stations, before joining CNN in 1981.

While at CNN she covered the student uprising in Beijing, interviewed Mikhail Gorbachev and was stationed at the United Nations during the Persian Gulf war.

“You can’t be funny [at the U.N.],” Moos says. “You can’t write to video because there is no video. It’s the United Nations; it’s a bunch of guys sitting around a table. It’s completely limiting. Maybe I just see the world through a quirky lens. But I can’t look at the news without thinking funny.”

Her humorous stories have become a staple of the network’s programming, though not all of them make the cut. And of course, sometimes there is pushback:

But Moos and her producer Richard Davis will inevitably run afoul of somebody. The “Smoking Baby” segment produced some hang-wringing inside CNN. “Some people thought it was child abuse and we shouldn’t be showing it,” she says. “But I don’t believe in practically any censoring. We’re adults and if it’s disturbing, too bad. Life is disturbing.”

Guthrie also speaks to Moos’ former CNN colleague (and one-time producer) Christiane Amanpour, who starts her new job as host of “This Week” on ABC in August:

Stop Touching the Oil

20 Years at CNN for Wolf Blitzer

CNN’s “Situation Room” anchor and sometimes-marathon-broadcaster, Wolf Blitzer, celebrates his big 20th anniversary at the network today. Blitzer joined CNN on May 8, 1990 when he started as the military-affairs correspondent at the Pentagon.

Not exactly the Magic Wall there behind him in that shot.

On Friday afternoon, 100+ staffers at CNN’s D.C. bureau gathered — along with his wife Lynn — to congraulate Blitzer. Photos and more after the jump…

CNN’s Richard Roth Marks 30 Years of Being ‘Shot Out of a Cannon’

The day before his 30th anniversary at CNN, senior United Nation’s correspondent Richard Roth was doing his first live shots from his new (temporary) studio at the UN. It’s a cramped space down the hall from Al-Jazeera English, BBC, CBC, and NHK that the network is using while the UN completes reconstruction on the wing where the studio was formerly housed.

Roth’s cameraman tells senior producer Terence Burke to squash himself against the wall to get his reflection out of the shot while another staffer trips over some wires as Roth prepares to go on air. Between the four men, almost 90 years at the network are represented. “The way things are going, this is rare,” Roth says.

In addition to the studio switch, the morning TVNewser visited Roth was a particularly hectic one with Bill and Hillary Clinton attending a special conference on Haiti. On a busy day, Roth will do 12 live segments between CNN and CNNi. “Every day you’re shot out of a cannon in the morning,” Roth says. “That’s how 30 years can pass.”

With that many years under his belt, Roth has a unique perspective on TV news. “Competitors called CNN ‘chicken noodle news’ and it was thought that we were going be an instant failure,” he says. “There are very few CNN originals left and I feel good that maybe I’m carrying the flag for the original goals of our founder, Ted Turner,” stressing that “the news is the most important aspect of CNN bar none that we should be constantly focused on what is news.”

Roth says “it’s disappointing to see” the recent articles about ratings woes. “But I remember the days when we were in Times Square and we were trying to stop people for man-on-the-street interviews and they would say, “C-N-what? Is that an HBO thing?’ I can remember looking at a woman right in her eyes and saying, ‘No no, you know Ted Turner? He owns the Atlanta Braves, the baseball team…?’ So I look at where we’ve come, and we’re a brand name…CNN means news.”

“Richard’s a great guy, a great friend and a great journalist,” Turner tells TVNewser. “His reporting over the years has been superb and his passion for the UN speaks volumes. The media world wouldn’t be the same without the likes of Richard Roth.”

Only a few “CNN originals” have been with the network longer than Roth, and in the past year, he’s seen two long-time colleagues take their leave.

Lou Dobbs also started at CNN in 1980 and over the years, Roth admits they often butted heads on how the UN should be covered.

Kathie Lee: ‘Once in a while, Hoda I feel like we’re the only two white, straight women left in the world’

The Today show’s Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford hosted the 15th Annual NLGJA Headlines & Headliners benefit last night in New York City.

The event brings out the biggest names in TV news from across the networks. Before breaking into song, Gifford told the crowd of gay journalists, “This whole don’t ask don’t tell thing. I mean if you guys want to serve in the millinery, that’s fine with me. Go, sew, sew, make your hats. That’s fine. I’m all for it.” (Video after the jump)

We chatted with the Fox Newsies, Jamie Colby, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Megyn Kelly. Kelly whipped out her iPhone to show us a picture of baby Edward who turned six months old yesterday.

NBC’s Weekend Today co-anchors Jenna Wolfe and Amy Robach were there. Robach — a newlywed — introduced her husband, the actor Andrew Shue to the crowd.

We chatted up CNN’s State Department correspondent Jill Dougherty and features reporter Jeanne Moos.

CBS News correspondent Manuel Gallegus — normally reporting from Los Angeles is calling New York home these days. A crowd gathered around HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell who told us a gentlemen she’d just met may show up as a guest on “Issues” in the coming days.

New mom CNBC’s Trish Regan, MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer and CBS’s Erin Moriarity were also in attendance.

Fox News Channel anchors Kimberly Guilfoyle, Jamie Colby, and Megyn Kelly at last night’s NLGJA benefit.

Jane Velez-Mitchell: ‘This Is the Dialogue That Needs to Happen about Addiction’

In NYC last night, HLN’s Jane Velez-Mitchell celebrated the release of her new memoir, iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to a Simpler, Honest Life, at the gallery of artist Peter Max. Velez-Mitchell, host of “Issues,” joked, “I just think this is a — first of all — fabulous concept, ‘Let’s have a cocktail party to celebrate a book about recovering from alcoholism.’”

Velez-Mitchell is the third HLN host to publish a book in the last few months, with Nancy Grace and Robin Meade also releasing books recently. TVNewser asked CNN Worldwide EVP Ken Jautz, who heads HLN, why his employees have been writing so much “It’s hosts who have an ability to communicate with audiences,” he said. “I think they see the opportunity to do so on another platform, employ the skills they’re proving so successful at on television on another platform, and we’re happy to support that.”

Also in attendance: HLN VP of programming Bill Galvin, “Issues” EP Stephanie Todd and Senior Producer Jennifer Williams, “Showbiz Tonight” host AJ Hammer, and Senior EP of CNN Entertainment and “Showbiz Tonight” David Levine. “Nancy Grace” Senior EP Dean Sicoli made a brief appearance to congratulate Velez-Mitchell, whose career he’d been instrumental in launching by featuring her as a guest host on “Nancy Grace,” before hustling back to the studio for Grace’s broadcast.

CNN anchors John Roberts and Kyra Phillips were also there (together) and CNN’s Gerri Willis and Jeanne Moos stopped by.

Party For Joy. Walters, Whoopi and More Gather at the Oak Room

“The View” co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Barabara Walters celebrate Behar’s new HLN show at the Plaza Hotel last night.

The famed Oak Room at New York’s Plaza Hotel was the setting for a party last night to celebrate the launch of HLN’s “The Joy Behar Show“, premiering Tuesday at 9pmET. The party, thrown by Behar’s “The View” co-host Barbara Walters, was packed with boldface names from news and entertainment and from all the networks.

In introducing Behar, Walters joked about her new show, “We originally thought it was going to go to Starr Jones. Then we were sure it was going to be Rosie [O'Donnell]. But finally, finally it is Joy.”

Behar thanked Walters and her “new boss” at HLN, CNN Worldwide EVP, Ken Jautz. “He found me. I was a poor little girl on a network show, trying to get a word in edgewise.”

Behar tells us she is a little nervous, but more excited about the new show. Her first guest, was Johnny Carson‘s last guest: Bette Midler.

Behar’s soon to be HLN colleagues were all there: Nancy Grace, Jane Velez-Mitchell and A.J. Hammer. CNN anchors Larry King, Anderson Cooper, T.J. Holmes, and Ali Velshi. CNN correspondents Alina Cho, Jason Carroll, Suzanne Malveaux (up from D.C. for U.N. week), and Jeanne Moos.

From NBC Hoda Kotb and Dawn Fratangelo; soon to be Fox Business host John Stossel, Judge Jeanine Pirro, Joan Rivers the Rev. Al Sharpton, Vera Wang, Lorraine Bracco and Alan Alda.

We’d just arrived when guest Suze Orman began telling us her concern that there’s something fishy about losing her once-commanding lead our GMA co-anchor off. “It’s physically impossible to gain that much,” said Orman of the lead now held by Ashleigh Banfield.
