On CNN, Candy Crowley will anchor “State of the Union” from Newtown. Don Lemon, Wolf Blitzer, Erin Burnett and Anderson Cooper will anchor from Newtown Sunday, and the network will air a weekday primetime schedule. Fox News will again have an expanded edition of “Fox & Friends” beginning at 6amET Sunday, and MSNBC will have live programming until 6pmET. HLN will cover the shooting beginning at 7amET and going through 1pmET.

On the broadcast networks, the shooting will be the main topic of the Sunday public affairs shows. Connecticut governor Dannel Malloy will appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” CBS’ “Face the Nation” and ABC’s “This Week.”

On CBS, Jeff Glor will anchor “CBS Evening News” from Newtown. “CBS Sunday Morning” will also feature three segments on the shooting.

ABC’s Dan Harris, Amy Robach, and Lara Spencer will anchor “Good Morning America” from Newtown. David Muir will also anchor “World News” from the location of the shooting.

>Update: The cable networks have added Sunday night programming to cover President Obama’s visit to Newtown:

Fox News will air a two-hour special anchored by Bret Baier at 6pmET. Baier will be joined by Molly Line and Mike Tobin from Newtown, as well as chief White House correspondent Ed Henry.

MSNBC will be live through 9pmET with coverage of Obama’s visit.

On CNN, Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett will anchor a three-hour special from Newtown beginning at 6pmET.

Axelrod has been the primary fill-in anchor on the program since Russ Mitchell left CBS News a year ago. Jeff Glor anchors the Sunday edition. The new deal, assuming it gets done, will formalize the role for Axelrod.

The weekend evening news ratings reflect the weekday ratings, with NBC leading the way, followed by ABC and CBS. The numbers might be smaller than the weekday counterparts, but more than 10 million people still get their news on the weekend from the newscasts. Lester Holt anchors the weekend editions of “NBC Nightly News,” while David Muir anchors ‘ABC World News” weekend.

After her Letterman sitdown, Winfrey talked with CBS’s Jeff Glor, for an interview that aired on “CBS This Morning:” “It felt like Dave was giving me therapy,” says Winfrey. “I am sitting on stage in a real conversation with Dave Letterman about things that I haven’t thought about for years,” she tells Glor.

Also reflective this morning, “CBS This Morning” hosts Charlie Rose and Norah O’Donnell. “This has been a great broadcast,” said Rose at the end of the show. “Think of the people that have been on. Warren Buffett, R.A. Dickey was here. Oprah Winfrey. What a great job to have.” O’Donnell responded: “It is. And you know what, Charlie? It’s the best job I have ever had. I do mean that. And a lot of it has to do with you and Gayle. Not [show EP] Chris Licht, though,” O’Donnell chuckled.

The tragic shooting in Colorado is forcing many TV news programs to throw out their plans for the day, what would likely have been a slow Summer Friday.

As we noted earlier “CBS This Morning” is going live into a third hour of programming, a first for the network morning show. CBS also says that Scott Pelley will anchor the ‘CBS Evening News” from Aurora, Colorado this evening.

> Update: Pelley will also anchor a special edition of “48 Hours” in primetime tonight at 8 PM. Jeff Glor is also going to Colorado. He’ll anchor a split edition of “CBS This Morning Saturday” and anchor “Evening News” Saturday and Sunday and stay for Monday’s “CBS This Morning.”

> More: On ABC, David Muir will report from Aurora for “ABC World News,” with Chris Cuomo anchoring a live “20/20″ from Colorado at 10 PM ET. Diane Sawyer–who was supposed to be off today–will come in and anchor “World News” from New York.

NBC’s Brian Williams will anchor from Aurora, and “Dateline” will have an hour on the shooting in primetime.

On cable news, Fox News Channel’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” is forgoing what was supposed to be a taped special on the economy at 10pmET and will instead cover the shooting. Van Susteren will anchor from Colorado. Also, Fox News Channel’s Jon Scott–a Colorado native–is en route and will report from Aurora for “Fox Report.”

> More: NBC’s Chris Jansing was supposed to be traveling to London today for Olympics coverage. Instead she is heading to Colorado where she will anchor a 4pmET and 10pmET specials on MSNBC. Coincidentally, one of the athletes she profiled for the Summer games is from Aurora.

On HLN this afternoon Kyra Phillips will make her debut on the network during “Evening Express” from 5-7 PM ET.

Earlier this week, we gave you ratings for the evening newscasts during the second quarter of 2012. So how did the weekend evening newscasts stack up?

For the just-concluded quarter, the weekend evening newscasts mirror their weekday counterparts: “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” on top, followed by “ABC World News with David Muir” and “CBS Evening News” (anchored by Jim Axelrod on Saturdays and Jeff Glor on Sundays).

The Sunday edition of “World News” delivered its largest overall second-quarter audience in nine years (since Q2 2003). Muir’s Sunday broadcast also slashed its year-ago gaps with “Nightly” by double-digits: -67% in Total Viewers and -54% in the A25-54 demographic.

NUGENT: I feel sorry for liberals who can be that brain dead as to take a clear statement of fear on my part and turn it into a threat against somebody else.

We share the weekend Evening News Ratings scoreboards every Tuesday, but we don’t often get a chance to share numbers for the weekend shows. So here goes.

Like its weekday counterpart, “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” is firmly locked in first place on Saturday and Sunday evening. In the year since David Muir took over as “World News” anchor second-place ABC has narrowed its margins with “Nightly” by -14% in Total Viewers and -3% in A25-54 viewers.

Over the last year, “NBC Nightly News” has averaged a 1.14 million Total Viewer lead over “ABC World News” and a 2.34 million Total Viewer lead over “CBS Evening News” which was, for most of the last year, anchored by Russ Mitchell. Jeff Glor took over as Sunday anchor last month. Among younger viewers, NBC leads ABC by 341,000 viewers and leads CBS by 559,000 viewers.

The margins between “NBC Nightly News” and “ABC World News” during the same time period are smaller on Sundays. The two shows are separated by 649,000 Total Viewers and 281,000 A25-54 viewers. On Sundays during football season, “Nightly” is displaced by NBC’s Sunday Night Football on the West Coast.

Glor anchored the Saturday edition of “Evening News” for more than a year before being named news anchor for “The Early Show” in 2010.

“I’m very excited,” he tells TVNewser. “I missed doing Saturday nights. I’m happy to be back.”

Glor praised weekday anchor Scott Pelley, who took over for Katie Couric while Glor was away from the “Evening News” anchor desk.

“The biggest difference is who’s in that chair Monday through Friday,” Glor says. “I think that Scott and his team are doing an extraordinary job. And I think my job is to try to help them hold down the fort one night a week. It’s an honor, and it’s something I don’t take lightly.”

Glor is taking over–in part at least–for Russ Mitchell, who announced that he was leaving CBS to join an NBC affiliate in Cleveland. Mitchell anchored the “Evening News” on Saturday and Sunday. CBS has not named an anchor for the Saturday edition of the nightly news program.

An announcement is expected Tuesday, sources tell TVNewser.

The current anchors Erica Hill and Jeff Glor, who were named co-anchor and news anchor less than a year ago, will play a role in the new morning program.

Chris Wragge will rejoin WCBS — he’d already been named 6pm co-anchor — and work on other projects. The new show will continue to leave weather reports to CBS affiliates.

Rose is best known for his late night, “Charlie Rose” interview show on PBS and Bloomberg. But he’s worked on and off for CBS News over the years, including as a correspondent on “60 Minutes II.” King, has worked in local newsrooms in Baltimore, Kansas City and Hartford, but may be best known as Oprah Winfrey’s friend and confidant. The two met while working at CBS-owned WJZ-TV in Baltimore. King hosts “The Gayle King Show,” on Sirius radio for two hours every morning. The second hour is simulcast on OWN TV. King is also an editor-at-large on O, The Oprah Magazine.

CBS News reassembled the inner workings of the show last Friday slashing some positions while adding others.
