Colorado Shooting: Denver Anchor in New York Visiting ‘World News Now’

Jeremy Hubbard is the former anchor of “World News Now.” He left ABC in 2010 for a job as main anchor at Denver Fox station KDVR. But Hubbard happened to be in New York for a wedding this weekend. At 3:15amET, just as the massacre back in Aurora was unfolding, he dropped by his old show. His former co-anchor Vinita Nair joined him.

About 90 minutes later, at 4:53amET, “World News Now” anchors Rob Nelson and Paula Farris led a special report (video after the jump) that was broadcast with coverage from ABC affiliate KMGH, which, as TVSPY reports, first began reporting the story around 2:40amMT.

‘World News Now’ Celebrates 20 Years

While NBC celebrates 60 years of “Today” next week, today ABC is marking 20 years of “World News Now.” ABC News president Ben Sherwood calls the overnight news show, “the unsung hero of our news division.” And to the production team, “You all have the confidence and creativity to take risks and reap the rewards.”

The show, created by David Bohrman, who went on to CNN and is now president of Current TV, debuted January 6, 1992.

“We never imagined that our little overnight effort would last so long, inform and entertain so many people, and launch so many careers,” Bohrman tells TVNewser. Bohrman says he still has the audition tapes from original anchors Aaron Brown and Lisa McRee. Over the years, other anchors have included Anderson Cooper, Alison Stewart, Kevin Newman, Thalia AssurasJuju Chang, Jeremy Hubbard, David Muir and more.

Bohrman has one bit of advice for the current producers: “They should bring back the World News Now Temperature Index.” Here’s a best-of video, shown this morning on the show:

And this wasn’t the only TV news morning marker Today.

Sherwood’s note, after the jump…

Jeremy Hubbard leaving ABC News

TVSpy reports former “World News Now” co-anchor and ABC News correspondent Jeremy Hubbard is leaving the network for Denver’s Fox affiliate. Hubbard will re-join KDVR FOX31 next month after nearly four years at ABC. Hubbard joined ABC from KDVR, where he was weekend anchor and reporter, in 2007.

ABC News Rejiggers Correspondent Assignments

ABC News has made a number of changes to its correspondent assignments, both domestically and abroad.

Some of the more notable moves:

Jeffrey Kofman will move to ABC’s London bureau, he had been based in Miami. Kofman was front and center during two of 2010′s biggest news stories: the Chilean miner rescue and the BP oil spill.

Matt Gutman, whose reporting for ABC News Radio during the BP oil spill drew praise from executives, will now be a correspondent for all ABC News broadcasts and platforms, and will be based out of Miami. Gutman is currently in Haiti reporting on the cholera outbreak there.

Jim Sciutto will return to Washington from London, where he has served as senior foreign correspondent since 2002.

A number of other moves, after the jump.

Jeremy Hubbard Says Goodbye to ABC World News Now

This morning was ABC “World News Now” anchor Jeremy Hubbard‘s last day on the program. Hubbard is going on to become a digital correspondent for ABC News with Rob Nelson coming in to join Vinita Nair behind the anchor desk.

In Hubbard’s honor, the “World News Now” staff took a look back at his time with the program:

As is tradition at “World News Now,” Hubbard had his likeness raised into the ABC News rafters. There was also a polka, sung to Hubbard’s dog Jake.

Check it out after the jump.

First on TVNewser: “World News Now,” ABC’s middle-of-the-night news program, is about to see another change at the anchor desk. TVNewser has learned that Jeremy Hubbard, who joined the broadcast in 2008, is departing “World News Now” for a promotion to digital correspondent for ABC News. (Welcome back to daylight, Jeremy)

ABC News is hiring Rob Nelson, morning news anchor at CBS-affiliate WWL-TV in New Orleans, to co-anchor the program with Vinita Nair. No word yet on his official start date.

“World News Now” has been something of a revolving door for young, promising talent. Since the show’s launch in 1992, the newscast’s seen Anderson Cooper, Juju Chang, Alison Stewart, Aaron Brown, Kevin Newman, David Muir, and others pass through the anchor chair.

Snow in the Morning

It’s snowing again in the northeast and that means more frozen newscasters. This morning, Sam Champion was out in Time Square for ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Dave Price was in Philadelphia for CBS’ “Early Show,” and Tom Costello was in D.C. for NBC’s “Today” show.

Overnight, ABC’s Jeremy Hubbard co-anchored from Central Park when the snow started falling for “World News Now.”

NBC News’ Mike Viqueira nearly got blown away during a segment outside the White House for “The Daily Rundown.”

The worst is supposed to come to New York later in the day, so get ready for more blizzard reporting.

Related: Molly Sims was warm and inside on “Fox & Friends” this morning when the hosts surprised her with a phone call from her parents in Florida who are big fans of the show.

Happy Birthday ‘World News Now’

On January 6th, 1992, ABC’s “World News Now” delivered its first broadcast. 18 years later, it’s still on the air, though you have to be up in the middle of the night to catch it. Yesterday, the overnight newscast — currently hosted by Jeremy Hubbard and Vinita Nair — commemorated its birthday and its entrance into legal adulthood with this segment:

Hope we posted this at an appropriate time for you.
