MLB.com Writers Robbed Outside Great American Ball Park

Barry Bloom and Thomas Harding of MLB.com were robbed at gunpoint early Tuesday morning outside Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.

A young man dressed in red stole $500 in cash from Bloom and $100 from Harding, along with credit cards.

“I thought the guy was a fan as he approached, but he said, ‘We can do this the easy way or the hard way,’” Bloom told Hall of Fame baseball writer Hal McCoy. “I started to walk away and he began yelling at me and pulled this big gun that looked like a Glock. He said, ‘Put your wallets on the ground.’ We did and he picked them up and ran off.”

Who carries $500 in their wallet, let alone when they are at work? That robber hit the meda jackpot.

If someone robbed me, they would be lucky to get $20 from me.

Under Armour rolled out their largest footwear advertising campaign to-date this week, entitled “Footsteps.”

According to the sports apparel giant, “the soon-to-be-released footwear line embraces the Brand’s performance DNA and infuses proprietary apparel technology into every shoe to help athletes perform their best.” Peter Berg of Friday Night Lights fame worked with Under Armour on the new commercial.

“The campaign marks an unprecedented step forward for Under Armour footwear, bringing together the highest caliber of talent on both sides of the camera to tell the story of our state-of-the-art performance footwear,” said Steve Battista, senior vice president, Brand, Under Armour. “We’ve captured athletes in their authentic training environment, showcasing Under Armour’s commitment to performance and innovation in a voice that is unique to the Brand. Our new line of footwear is helping athletes create footsteps, not just hear them.”

Sox-Yanks Score Highest Ratings of Season for Sunday Night Baseball

Neil Best of Newsday is reporting that the overnight numbers for last night’s Red Sox-Yankees game on ESPN were the highest for Sunday Night Baseball this season, with 3.6 percent of homes in major markets tuning in. Boston led the way with 17 percent, while New York posted 8.6 percent.

Boston beat New York 3-2 in 10 innings on Sunday to move one game ahead of New York in the standings. Yankees closer Mariano Rivera blew the save in the 9th inning, and Sox right fielder Josh Reddick won it in the 10th on a walk off single off Phil Hughes that scored Darnell McDonald. It was Rivera’s 14th blown save against the Red Sox, his most versus any team. Boston has won 10 of 12 versus New York this season.

BBC Posts Online Planner for Watching 2012 Olympics on Website

In a bid to help fans plan their viewing schedules for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, the BBC has posted an online planner, while also announcing that fans watching online will have full control over what events they watch.

With up to 12 sports taking place simultaneously on many days of next year’s Olympic Games, it will be the corporation’s most ambitious coverage of an Olympics to date with more than 2,000 hours of live sport on the BBC website.

The BBC has launched an online guide to help people plan their viewing, highlighting “ones to watch” and “medal events”. It will be updated with more information including when and where British teams and individuals will be competing.

Dave Gordon, the BBC’s head of major events, said: “If you want to spend all day watching the water polo or fencing or taekwondo or swimming, or any combination of the 26 sports, for the first time you can. The choice is yours rather than ours.

That’s pretty cool (even if the games aren’t for a year).

“As host nation broadcaster, this online guide is the first step in realising our commitment to making every sport from every venue where it’s happening on every day of the games available to the British public.

“From the start of the early morning action until the end of competition just before midnight, there will be live BBC Sport online coverage. You can look at the big picture each day, planning for those not to be missed events.”

Video: Funny or Die Uses Field of Dreams to Spoof NFL Lockout

Funny or Die paired up with ESPN and the NFL Network to produce a video that spoofs the NFL lockout by invoking iconic scenes from Field of Dreams. The video premiered this morning on SportsCenter, and features Taylor Lautner in Kevin Costner‘s role, Dennis Haysbert in James Earl Jones‘ role, Ray Liotta (who played Shoeless Joe Jackson in the baseball movie) in the role of the money-grubbing businessman, and various football players including Tony Gonzalez, Ray Lewis and DeSean Jackson.

No, Jackson does not play the hot dog lodged in the little girl’s throat.
