Jerry Springer to Host ‘Tabloid’ for ID

The New Year brings a new series for Jerry Springer. The former mayor and local news anchor turned tabloid talk show host has a new show for Investigation Discovery called, appropriately, “Tabloid.”

The one-hour show peels back the curtain to probe the most bizarre larger-than-life stories you can’t possibly imagine. “You can’t make this stuff up,” said Springer. “Life invariably outruns imagination when it comes to outrageousness.”

“There’s no one better to guide viewers through the scandalous stories seen in TABLOID than the man who has spent decades unveiling the most outrageous tales,” says Henry Schleiff, Group President, Investigation Discovery, Destination America, and Military Channel.

The show debuts two weeks from tomorrow, Thursday, January 16 at 10pmET. For now, check out Jerry Springer’s First Big Break, courtesy of mediabistro.TV:

South of the Border and Below the Belt: Talk Show Host Takes on CNN Anchor

Bozzo ShowLaura Bozzo

One of Latin America’s most popular talk show hosts is in a war of words with a CNN en Espanol anchor.

Laura Bozzo, (above) host of “Laura” (seen in the U.S. on UniMas) is being vilified on social media for using a state helicopter to stage a dramatic arrival — in full rescue garb — in a remote Mexican village that had been decimated by Tropical Storm Manuel.

That stunt has drawn the condemnation of government officials and journalists, including Carmen Aristegui, (below) who hosts a show on CNN en Espanol. Aristegui talked with two journalists who witnessed what happened. One of them said he saw the helicopter descend, saw Bozzo talking to personnel on the ground. Then, the helicopter ascended, only to come back down and have cameras capture Bozzo’s descent.

CarmenAristeguiFollowing Aristegui’s criticism on Tuesday, Bozzo went on a rant on her show Wednesday. “I have been attacked personally by very repugnant means by someone who says she is a journalist,” said Bozzo. “Liar, Ms. Carmen Aristegui. You are a LIAR!”

Today, Aristegui doubled down, telling viewers she wouldn’t “change one comma” of her criticism. “This country doesn’t deserve this swill,” she says of Bozzo.

Peruvian-born Bozzo hosted a Jerry Springer-like show, first from Lima and later from Miami, called “Laura en America.” She returned to Peru, where in 2003, she began serving 30 months of house arrest amid a corruption scandal. She moved to Mexico in 2009 where she’s hosted various similar programs.

Jerry Springer: My First Big Break

Say the name Jerry Springer and the first thing that comes to mind might be a daytime talk show where people throw chairs at one another to make a point. So it may not be much of a surprise to learn Jerry got his start in politics.

The former lawyer, former campaign adviser for Robert F. Kennedy, former mayor of Cincinnati and former anchor for the city’s NBC affiliate tells mediabistroTV his career wasn’t launched by one big break as much as it was the result of being ready for anything.

Jerry Springer on Fox News: ‘Every single morning you guys are slamming Obama’

Shock talk TV host Jerry Springer wore out his welcome a few minutes into his segment on Fox News this morning. Springer was part of a political panel on “Fox & Friends” discussing, among other things, this week’s controversial Newsweek cover. An essay by Andrew Sullivan asks “Why are Obama’s Critics So Dumb?”

Springer, who said he’s politically to the left of Obama, used the discussion to make a point about his perception of the coverage of Obama on “Fox & Friends.”

Springer: We’re here on Fox News. Every single day in fairness, you guys, every single day, bash President Obama.

Gretchen Carlson: I’m going to take to you task on that because on this panel right here, we have a fair and balanced panel right here. I’m the independent.

Springer: But, what’s the rest of the show? Every single morning you guys are slamming Obama. You know you are. I’m not saying you don’t have a right to. But every single conversation is something bad about Obama.

Wrapping the segment, Carlson added, “By the way, Jerry, you obviously don’t watch our show because you do not understand there is a reason — I’ll speak for myself as the independent on the panel — quite frankly we present both sides of the story and leave it up to our viewers to decide where they fall.”

Burt Dubrow Tapped to Helm Dr. Drew’s HLN Show

In a memo to staff today, HLN VP of programming Bill Galvin said that Burt Dubrow was joining the network as executive producer of the upcoming program hosted by Dr. Drew Pinsky. Dubrow has a wealth of experience with talk shows, having served as an executive producer for shows hosted by Jerry Springer, Tom Green, Christopher Lowell and Sally Jessy Raphael.

Writes Galvin:

To this day, Burt describes himself as a “student of television,” while Drew calls him “a driving force.”  Scot Safon notes that “Burt has a track record of building very successful programming around top talent…in Dr. Drew, he’s getting the chance to break some new ground on the TV landscape.”

Dr. Drew is looking to have a busy 2011. B&C’s Ben Grossman reports that Pinsky will host a daytime talk show on The CW starting this Fall. That is in addition to the syndicated radio show “Loveline” and his work on VH1.

Galvin’s memo is after the jump.

As part of her farewell season, Oprah Winfrey sits down with those who came before — and beside — her on the talk show circuit.

Among the guests on tomorrow’s “Oprah Winfrey Show”: Phil Donahue, who went on to host a short-lived show on MSNBC in the timeslot now occupied by Keith Olbermann. And Geraldo Rivera who, after leaving daytime, went on to host a primetime show on CNBC and is now a mainstay of the Fox News weekend primetime. Sally Jessy Raphael, Ricki Lake and Montel Williams also joined Winfrey to talk about their experiences in daytime television. Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones did not.
