  • CNBC host Jim Cramer is interviewed by Sports Business Daily. “If you ask me who I’m most proud of that like the show, it’s the ESPN guys. When I hear them refer to the show or when I’m involved with anything around ESPN, it sends me to the moon because ESPN is the greatest. ESPN becomes my home page during Eagles season. I worship them. They’re just unbelievably good.”
  • Former CNN host turned OraTv host Larry King is getting a new studio. His online talk show had been originating from King’s “trophy room” in his Los Angeles home: “This month, production of “Larry King Now” moved to a new studio in Glendale. Shawn picked paint colors for the new set. And now the man who spent decades trying to keep himself out of his questions, in an effort to focus the conversation on the guest, is trying to inject more of his personality and opinion into the show. “That’s expected on the Internet,” King said.”

Remembering Mark Haines, One Year Later

Throughout CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street” this morning, Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer, David Faber and Melissa Lee shared memories of Mark Haines, the longtime CNBC anchor, who died one year ago today.

“His picture is on a plaque here at the big board,” said Quintanilla. “He was always in your corner. The investor’s corner.”

“I miss him every day,” added Faber. “I think it’s a tribute to him a year after his death, that a day doesn’t pass that I don’t get a tweet or an e-mail saying either, ‘Mark would have loved that question’ or, ‘Mark would be proud.’ People have not forgotten him for a very good reason.”

CNBC’s ‘Mad Money’ Celebrates Seven Years

On CNBC’s “Mad Money,” host Jim Cramer celebrated the program’s seventh anniversary with a “seven” themed show. He began with a monologue somewhat like a “State of the Union” for the financial biz.

CNBC Constructs Huge New Set At NYSE

In mid-to-late February, CNBC will formally unveil a new set on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The location of the set (in the middle of the floor in a spot formerly occupied by trading booth #9) and the size of it (12 feet wide, 23 feet long, 12 feet high, 16,000 pounds), are unprecedented for a financial news outlet.

“We love buzz, and every morning they are going to ring the bell up in that balcony, it will be like broadcasting from Times Square, where every day is New Years Eve,” CNBC anchor Carl Quintanilla told us on the NYSE trading floor.

Indeed, the set is no more than 10 feet from where the opening and closing bells are rung, directly underneath the balcony that viewers routinely see on cable news (see below).

CNBC will be keeping its space on a separate balcony overlooking the trading floor, where it will be used primarily by producers and technicians, who can control small robotic cameras that will be mounted to a custom track system on the new set. Quintanilla says that being at ground-level will be a significant upgrade to the current setup.

“The balcony has been a great home, [Mark] Haines made it work, but sometimes we feel like Statler and Waldorf from the ‘Muppet Show,’ commenting from the balcony,” Quintanilla says. “Here [motions to the set] you are in arms reach of the traders making markets and stocks, it is as close as you can get.”

Friedman: ‘CNBC shouldn’t get too cocky’

Marketwatch.com’s Jon Friedman wonders if a spate of recent CNBC departures is creating “a brain drain” at the #1 business network. Friedman points out that while several have left, the network has held on to the likes of Maria Bartiromo, Jim Cramer and Joe Kernen, among others.

Notably, CNBC announced in late 2009 the hiring of Wall Street Journal news executive Nik Deogun to be its managing editor. Before Deogun arrived, CNBC on-air journalists seemed to preen first and try to break news second. Deogun has helped dial down the noise.

And while CNBC exists as brand first, self second, Friedman says too much outflow can cause a drought:

Broadcast journalism is littered with the stories of networks that believed their press clippings. They lost top-flight employees and eventually deteriorated. CNBC shouldn’t get too cocky.

Mandy Drury’s Dream Job

In the just released November 2011 ratings, CNBC’s Business Day programming (9am-5pm) is up +31% in A25-54 viewers. The network’s midday show, “Street Signs” up +29% in younger viewers. Last November the show was anchored by Erin Burnett, now with CNN. This year, it’s an ensemble of Mandy Drury, Brian Sullivan, Herb Greenberg and the occasional drop-in by Jim Cramer.

Drury calls what she’s doing now her dream job. “It was my dream to come to New York,” says the Australian native Drury in part III of our Media Beat interview. “As a business journalist, there’s probably only a few cities in the world where you can get as much of a stimulating challenge as I have now.” WATCH:

TVNewsers Wear Purple To Show Their ‘Spirit’

People across the country today participated in “Spirit Day,” wearing purple as a sign of support for LGBT youth. The movement, started by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, counted several visible people as champions of the anti-bullying cause: morning anchors, evening anchors and cable anchors on several networks were color-coordinated today.

On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts participated, as did Ann Curry and Al Roker on NBC’s “Today.” All four co-hosts on “The View” — Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck — were decked out in purple as well.

Mark Haines Inducted into CableFAX Hall of Fame

The late CNBC anchor Mark Haines was inducted into the CableFAX Hall of Fame last night at the annual Program Awards. This morning on “Squawk on the Street” — the show Haines used to host — CNBC colleagues Melissa Lee, Carl Quintanilla and Jim Cramer remembered their “dear friend”:

TV, Wall Street Bigwigs Fete Erin Burnett at CNN Launch Party

Mark Whitaker, Jim Walton, Anderson Cooper, Erin Burnett, Piers Morgan and Ken Jautz

Last night CNN feted its newest anchor, Erin Burnett, at Robert restaurant at The Museum of Arts and Design in Columbus Circle, just a few hundred feet from CNN’s NYC headquarters. Overlooking Columbus Circle and the southwest corner of Central Park, guests watched the city fade into night, while clips of Burnett preparing for her show played on a loop on TV sets spread throughout the space.

Just after 7:30 PM, CNN/U.S. executive VP Ken Jautz and CNN managing editor Mark Whitaker made some brief remarks. Jautz commented that Burnett is extremely passionate about news, and that anyone expecting a curt reply when asking her what she is working on is in for a long conversation.

Burnett then addressed the crowd and thanked them for their support. Her manager John Ferriter was in attendance, as was her fiancee David Rubulotta. Jautz and Whitaker got shout-outs, as did CNN Worldwide president Jim Walton and CNN ad sales chief Greg D’alba, both of whom were working the room.
