Derrick Brooks Turned Down Offer To Stay At ESPN

We learned Thursday that Derrick Brooks and Warrick Dunn would not be returning to ESPN as contributors on First Take.

While we don’t know for sure why Dunn won’t be returning to ESPN, Brooks told USA Today that he was too busy to work for the network this season:

“They wanted me to come back but I couldn’t with everything else going on. It was just difficult to do,” Brooks said over the phone Thursday. Brooks added he continues to have an “excellent” relationship with the brass in Bristol.

The ex-Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers has also been in touch NFL Network and Versus about on-air roles. But he doesn’t want to commit unless he’s able to give it 100%.

“I don’t want to start something with all this other stuff going on. My word is my word and I keep my word,” Brooks said.

Along with charity and spending time with his family, Brooks was named president of the AFL’s Tampa Bay Storm in April.

Video: Rex Ryan's cameo on 'CSI: New York'

Jets head coach Rex Ryan and Jets general manager Mike Tanenbaum make a cameo on this Friday’s episode of “CSI: New York.” Neither embarrass themselves during this segment, but the best line definitely belongs to show star Gary Sinise, who ends the encounter by saying to a colleague, “Let’s go get a snack,” a nod to Ryan’s notorious tagline from HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series.

John Sterling: The King Of The Home-Run Call

Love him or hate him, New York Yankees announcer John Sterling has a unique style that helps him stand out from other radio broadcasters.

When Suzyn Waldman isn’t cutting him off in the booth, Sterling is probably belting out one of his many trademark home-run calls.

New York magazine breaks down the seven type of home run calls from Sterling:

1. RHYMES
Sterling tends to rely on rhyming when presented with a boring name that he can’t really work with: Russell Martin, Andruw Jones, etc. Having said that, Brett Gardner – whose last name is an actual word – deserves better, don’t you think?
Examples:
• “Russell has muscle!” (Russell Martin)
• “Robbie Cano, don’cha know?” (Robinson Cano) Read more

L.A. Lakers Weren't The Only Losers Last Night

The Los Angeles Lakers learned the hard way on Wednesday night that you can’t take the Cleveland Cavaliers for granted.

Their flagship radio station, ESPN 710 AM, felt the game was in the bag before the opening tip, prompting this promo:

“Tomorrow, the champs are in Cleveland to get another quality practice in before the All-Star break. Oh yeah, the Cavaliers will be there, too. Doing what? Who knows?”

In the words of LeBron James, “Karma.”
