How Choreographed was the President’s Gay Marriage Evolution?

It started Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” with VP Joe Biden affirming his support of gay marriage. Then on Monday, Education Secretary Arne Duncan went on “Morning Joe” and said “Yes, I do” when TIME’s Mark Halperin asked if he believes in same-sex marriage. Then it all culminated yesterday as ABC’s Robin Roberts got the exclusive with President Obama affirming his support of gay marriage.

But today on “CBS This Morning,” “Will & Grace” creator Max Mutchnick said Pres. Obama should not have been surprised by Biden opening the can of gay worms, because Biden “was testing the material out of town” two weeks earlier at an fundraiser in Los Angeles.

Mutchnick says Biden spoke at the private function and his remarks were recorded by a White House camera crew. “It says to me that this was all very choreographed,” Mutchnick told CBS. “I mean, look, I’m just a man who experienced this, but Vice President Biden made it very clear that day these were his views and so much so that they wanted to record him.”

“The sum total is the White House should not have been surprised by what he said on ‘Meet the Press,’” said Mutchnick.

Keith Olbermann’s Appearance on ‘The Last Word’

As TVNewser reported yesterday, MSNBC’s “Countdown” host Keith Olbermann was a guest on the first edition of “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” last night, joining Vice President Joe Biden.

While O’Donnell told us that Olbermann would be giving him advice on hosting a new show, the topic of conversation took a more serious turn, with the two wonking out over tax policy:

Olbermann did have some friendly advice for O’Donnell at the end of the segment, however.

“I can not thank you enough for getting me started on this new show,” O’Donnell said to Olbermann.

“You are very welcome and keep them there until 11 o’clock,” Olbermann quipped.

MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell on the ‘Absurdist,’ World of News, and Advice from Keith Olbermann

Tonight at 10 PM, MSNBC will premiere the newest addition to its primetime lineup, “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell.” Following “Countdown” at 8 PM and “The Rachel Maddow Show” at 9 PM, “The Last Word” completes MSNBC’s primetime in a sense, as the network finally puts a live, original show in the 10 PM hour, joining competitors CNN and Fox News.

Tonight’s premiere will feature an interview with Vice President Joe Biden, but it will also see O’Donnell getting advice on how to host a primetime show from MSNBC’s most prominent primetime talent: Keith Olbermann.

“I will be getting advice on hosting the show from Keith tonight, live,” O’Donnell tells TVNewser. “He is going to appear on my first show, as he should, because Keith created the ratings platform in primetime at MSNBC that has made the creation of the other two shows in primetime possible.”

Indeed, O’Donnell, hardly a TV novice, noted that at the end of the day, the driving factor in television is ratings.
