Halderman, a former producer for “48 Hours Mystery,” joined the staff of the hour-long documentary crime program a few weeks ago. He is a producer on the show, and is not expected to work in the field. “On the Case” is not believed to be the first opportunity Halderman has had to work after being released from prison late last year.

CBS led the pack with seven wins, four for newsmagazine “60 Minutes” and three for the “CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.”

NBC News took home six Emmys, two for the “Inside the Obama White House” special, two for “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” one for “Dateline” and one for “Today.”

PBS took home five awards, two for “Frontline,” two for “Bill Moyers Journal,” one for Frontline/World and one for P.O.V.

ABC News took home two Emmys, one for its coverage of President Obama’s inauguration, and the other for Diane Sawyer‘s 20/20 special on “Children of the Mountains.”

One person who did not win: Former CBS News “48 Hours Mystery” producer Joe Halderman, who attempted to extort late night talk show host David Letterman. Halderman was nominated for a story he worked on related to the Amanda Knox trial. In fact, someone in attendance at the awards ceremony tells TVNewser that Halderman’s name was absent from the official program, even though he was the lead producer on the hour that was nominated.

Joe Halderman, who was released from jail on good behavior earlier this month, tells The Hollywood Reporter (via his lawyer) that he will not be attending the News & Doc Emmys September 27. He was nominated for a “48 Hours Mystery” piece about the Amanda Knox trial.

“He’s not doing any interviews and just wants to return to a quiet and productive life,” his lawyer, Gerald Shargel said.

Halderman has expressed an interest in returning to TV news production, now that he is once again a free man.

“He survived this, and he’s glad to be getting off the island,” his lawyer, Gerald Shargel, said Wednesday. The former CBS “48 Hours” producer – who’s up for a News and Documentary Emmy award this year – is looking for work, Shargel added.

As McManus points out, CBS’ 31 nominations far-outpaces the broadcast competition (NBC had 17, ABC had 9), an achievement that was certainly overshadowed yesterday by the surprising news that David Letterman extortionist Joe Halderman was listed among the nominees.

Halderman is nominated as a Producer for the CBS “48 Hours Mystery” story “American Girl, Italian Nightmare,” which is up for the Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a News Magazine category Emmy.

Emmy-nominated Producer Joe Halderman is currently serving a 6-month jail sentence.

PBS had the most overall nominations with 37, followed by CBS with 31. Among the other news networks, NBC received 17, ABC got 9, CNN 6, CNBC 4, BBC America 2, and MSNBC 1.

ABC and NBC both received two nominations for breaking news coverage. ABC’s were for the Fort Hood and Pittsburgh Gym shootings while NBC’s were for the Miracle on the Hudson and the crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407. All three major network newscasts were nominated for their Afghanistan coverage as was “Dan Rather Reports” on HDNet.

“60 Minutes” had the most nominations for any program, 16, including for Steve Kroft‘s “Birdmen” piece and “The Cost of Dying,” which recently won a Peabody award. “48 Hours Mystery” received three nominations.

CBS “48 Hours” producer Joe Halderman was sentenced today to six months jail time, starting immediately, in the extortion plot against “Late Show” host David Letterman. More from the AP.

“I need to talk to you about a segment of my life here that began six months ago,” said Letterman. “I found myself in some legal trouble… I had never been involved in anything like this in my life. I was concerned and full of anxiety and nervous and worried.”

“The people in the district attorney’s office said this will be handled professionally, this will be handled skillfully, and appropriately. Well, the matter was resolved today.”

Letterman thanked the DA’s office, the special prosecutions bureau and the NYPD.

As for Halderman, he’ll serve six months after pleading guilty to blackmail. The award-winning producer on “48 Hours” is no longer employed by the network. A CBS News spokesperson could not confirm when his employment with the company came to an end, or how.

The Times’ reports that Halderman “will serve six months in jail, according to two people briefed on the case,” and that “Mr. Halderman will also serve four and a half years probation and must perform 1,000 hours of community service.”

Update: CNN took Halderman and his attorney’s press conference live at 2:32pmET. “This afternoon, we entered a plea of guilty. Mr. Halderman plead guilty to attempted grand larceny by extortion, and he’s done it in an effort to resolve this matter, it is now behind him,” said Halderman’s attorney, Gerald Shargell, who also said he had not spoken to Letterman.

Halderman, in a very brief statement, apologized to Letterman and his family and said that he would not be doing any interviews.

Joe Halderman‘s motion to dismiss the case against him in the David Letterman extortion plot was denied by a state supreme court judge this morning, reports the AP. While the “48 Hours Mystery” producer has been accused of blackmailing Letterman for $2 million, his attorney argues that his client was engaged in a business transaction.

We can now add “attorneys making opening arguments on network morning shows” to the list of strange things in this case.

The segments are pretty similar, but two points stand out:

• Letterman’s attorney said of his client, “He is absolutely prepared to testify and will answer all questions.”

• Halderman’s attorney says his client is not looking for a plea deal, but is instead looking to get the case dismissed. “If it doesn’t happen,” he said, “The next thing that’s going to happen is a trial.”

In her first public comments since Halderman’s arrest Oct. 1 on charges of attempted grand larceny, Zirinsky said yesterday that the hard-charging producer had raised the bulk of the money “from family and friends, not from people in the shop.”

That was all Zirinsky said. Like everyone at CBS, she is on media lockdown about the case. No mystery there. “Late Show” host David Letterman, the target of Halderman’s alleged $2 million extortion try, is a cash cow for CBS.

Halderman’s attorney, Gerald Shargel, argued in court yesterday that his client is guilty of no crime and that charges should be dropped. Halderman was only trying to sell a screenplay to Letterman, Shargel said, not shake him down about his intra-network sexual liaisons.

Letterman’s attorney, Daniel J. Horwitz, labeled it “classic blackmail,” not a business transaction. Both sides said they would go to trial, if necessary. The judge is expected to rule in January.

Meanwhile, Halderman’s suspension went from paid to unpaid about two weeks ago, CBS sources confirm. Reason? He broke the morals clause in his contract, they say.

While current CBS employees aren’t talking, several alums are, including Marcy McGinnis, who worked with Halderman when she ran the London bureau from 1992 to ’97. She considers him a friend.

The NY Post reports that Halderman, a CBS News producer, is no longer being paid by his network:

CBS has cut off the “48 Hours” producer’s paychecks, changing his status to suspended-without-pay effective two weeks ago, sources told The Post.

It was decided that he had violated the morals clause of his contract, one source explained.

A long-time colleague of Halderman’s, Dr. Bob Arnot, appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” earlier today and said, “There will be some jaws that drop on this one.” Clip:

NY Observer’s Felix Gillette reports that a quick plea agreement, which has financial benefits for Halderman and would save Letterman further embarrassment, is looking unlikely:

Over the weekend, Dr. Bob Arnot, a friend and former colleague of Mr. Halderman, told The Observer that Mr. Halderman is currently planning to try and take the case all the way to trial. In a recent interview with Newsday’s Verne Gay, Mr. Halderman’s attorney Gerald Shargel likewise suggested that no plea agreement is in the works.

The Observer also reports that Halderman has raised $100k dollars for his defense thus far.
