CNN Plans Two-Day Special Report On Gun Background Checks

CNN is getting political day during a two-day special report on firearms background checks. “Guns Under Fire: A CNN Special Report on Background Checks” will kick-off this evening on “AC360″ as Dana Bash interviews former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. Piers Morgan and Wolf Blitzer will also discuss the issue on their respective shows.

Wednesday, the channel will present a number of special reports on background checks, including interviews and analysis on the issue (see all the reports after the jump). The reasoning behind the special report? “According to the latest polls, 9 out of 10 Americans support tougher background checks, so how is it that Congress can do nothing?” the channel says in a release.

2013 TVNewser Bracket Challenge Update

“First Thursday,” the big kick-off for March Madness, is over, and with it the 2013 TVNewser March Madness bracket challenge really gets started.

This early in the game everyone is really close, but a few people have separated themselves from the pack.

CNBC’s Brian Schactman leads the way, with his colleague Joe Kernen and CNN’s Brooke Baldwin right behind him. Right now Lisa Sylvester, Wolf Blitzer, Gayle King and Norah O’Donnell are at the bottom of the pack, but there is plenty of time for a comeback.

TVNewser’s 2013 March Madness Bracket Challenge

Spring is here (even though it may not feel like it where you are) and with it comes the sweet sound of sneakers on hardwood: the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament.

Every year we have some of the best and brightest from the world of TV news come together in one competition to see who is tops at picking winners and losers.

Ultimately there can be only one winner, and they get the chance to brag about their picking prowess for all to see. 2012′s winner was Fox Business Network stocks editor Liz MacDonald. Liz wont be participating this year, but 2011′s winner Dominic Chu is back to try and reclaim the title.

CNN Spreading Out Correspondents Across Swing States

CNN has announced a slew of assignments for network correspondents in advance of the Presidential election. The network will have anchors and reporters in every swing state, as well as some floaters that will travel to multiple states, and the correspondents embedded with the campaigns. The network is launching segments branded as “The Final Battlegrounds” starting on Monday.

“CNN is deploying its vast resources and top-notch reporters into the states that the campaigns are targeting as the election nears,” said Mark Whitaker, executive VP and managing editor of CNN Worldwide in a statement. “Our in-depth reporting and analysis will keep voters informed of the up-to-the-minute developments that will determine the outcome of this extraordinarily close presidential race.”

CNN Cancels ‘John King USA’

CNN is canceling its 6 PM program “John King USA,” and replacing it with an extra hour of “The Situation Room.” John King will become CNN’s lead national campaign correspondent for the remainder of the election cycle, though that is clearly not as plum a gig as having an hour-long nightly program.

In a memo to CNN staff obtained by TVNewser, CNN/U.S. chief Ken Jautz explained the move:

“John will be providing reports for SitRoom, AC360 and other programs and CNN platforms. This is John’s seventh presidential campaign, fourth with CNN, and making him available across our programming lineup allows us to better tap his skills and experience, especially on the ground reporting in major battleground states and among critical voting blocs.”

CNN also made some other changes in its Washington bureau, naming Joe Johns crime and justice correspondent, and Suzanne Kelly intelligence correspondent.

The New York Times‘ Brian Stelter first reported the King news.

“JK USA” launched in March 2010, leading up to the midterm elections. Originally at 7 PM, it moved to 6 PM when Erin Burnett joined the network. The program–which focused heavily on politics–failed to catch on with viewers, although it saw a slight uptick during the heat of the current Presidential campaign.

Cable Networks Cover DC, MD, WI Primaries

Primary season continues tomorrow as voters in Maryland, Wisconsin and Washington, DC head to the polls. Here’s what the cable networks have planned for tomorrow night:

On Fox News, Bret Baier will anchor a live “Special Report” at 11pmET. Baier will also anchor live cut-ins throughout FNC’s usual primetime programming. Rick Folbaum will host live coverage steaming on FoxNews.com beginning at 8pmET. On FBN, Neil Cavuto will also be live beginning at 8pmET.

MSNBC will cover results within normal primetime programming, with plans to stay live until all the primaries have been called.

Candy Crowley, Joe Johns and Tom Foreman will provide ongoing updates on CNN during the normal primetime lineup.

Voting in Louisiana’s GOP primary is underway, and the cable networks will offer varying degrees of coverage when the polls close at 9pmET tonight. Here’s what they have planned:

On Fox News, Harris Faulker will anchor a live “Fox Report” at 10pmET. She will also provide live cut-ins beginning at 8pmET.

Alex Wagner will host a live election special on MSNBC at 9pmET.

We know you can’t wait for Super Tuesday, but hold your horses. First, Washingtonians vote tomorrow. Here’s the cable coverage:

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer leads an hour of coverage from 8-9pmET joined John King, Gloria Borger and CNN contributors Hilary Rosen and Ari Fleisher. And since they can’t wait, Jim Acosta and Joe Johns will report from the Super Tuesday state of Ohio.

Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier anchors from 10-11pmET. Baier will be joined by Bob Beckel, Charles Krauthammer, A.B. Stoddard, Steve Hayes, Kirsten Powers and Ed Rollins.

MSNBC will be producing extended cut-ins during Saturday night documentaries.

Network Plans for the Arizona and Michigan Primaries

Voters in Michigan and Arizona go to the polls tomorrow. Polls close at 8pmET in Lower Michigan and most of the U.P. And and hour later, at 9pmET, in the Westernmost counties which are in the Central Time Zone. Polls close at 9pmET in Arizona.

FNC will be live from 9pm – Midnight ET with co-anchors Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly reporting the voting results from both states. Martha MacCallum and Bill Hemmer will provided live coverage of exit poll numbers. Also contributing to the network’s primary coverage: Chief Political Correspondent Carl Cameron, correspondents Shannon Bream and Mike Tobin, and Senior National Correspondent John Roberts who will be stationed at the primary locations and candidates’ headquarters.

Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, Erin Burnett and John King will headline CNN’s America’s Choice 2012 coverage beginning at 7pmET. CNN Gloria Borger and David Gergen, along with political contributors Paul Begala, Maria Cardona, Alex Castellanos and Ari Fleischer will be on set in the CNN Election Center. Candy Crowley will report from Romney campaign headquarters in Michigan, Jim Acosta will be at Santorum headquarters, and Joe Johns will be at Gingrich headquarters.

Networks and Cable Channels Roll Out Key Talent For 2011 State Of The Union Coverage

All four major broadcast networks, along with the cable news channels, are bringing out the big name talent for coverage of the 2011 State of The Union address Tuesday evening.

On the broadcast networks, NBC has Brian Williams anchoring along with “Meet the Press” host David Gregory.

ABC has Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos anchoring, joined by a number of correspondents, hosts, and analysts, including Jake Tapper, Christiane Amanpour, Jonathan Karl and Deborah Roberts.

On CBS, “CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric will lead the coverage, joined by CBS reporters and analysts.

On the Fox broadcasting network, Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith will anchor coverage. Smith will be joined by “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace and correspondent Wendell Goler.

Rick Klein: Your TVNewser Bracket Challenge ’09 Champ

Well, as Tyler Hansborough fulfilled his destiny and hoisted the NCAA Championship trophy last night, ABC News’ Rick Klein was fulfilling his destiny as winner of the TVNewser Bracket Challenge ’09.

The inaugural champion edged out championship game surges from CBS’ Jeff Glor (finishing 2nd) and TVNewser editor Chris Ariens (tied for 3rd), while CNN correspondent Joe Johns‘ (3rd) hopes of winning it all were dashed as Michigan St. fell to UNC.

There are just two possible winners of the TVNewser Bracket Challenge ’09: ABC’s Rick Klein and CNN’s Joe Johns. Klein has the five-point lead, but only has UNC in the finals. Johns has Michigan St. winning it all — if that happens, he wins. If the Spartans can win just one game, and face Villanova in the finals, Johns and Klein tie.

Just three brackets (Johns, CBS’ Jeff Glor and TVNewser editor Chris Ariens) still have their champ pick alive in the Final Four.

The Note Takes The Lead

With the Sweet 16 set in the NCAA tournament, ABC’s Rick Klein has surged into the lead in the TVNewser Bracket Challenge ’09.

Klein has one of the four brackets (along with MSNBC’s Willie Geist, CBS’ Jeff Glor and TVN editor Chris Ariens) with all Elite Eight teams still intact. The leader after Day 1, CNN’s Joe Johns, fell back into the pack, and his pick of Michigan in the Final Four will hurt his chances at victory.

And although he’s currently sitting in last place, ABC’s John Berman writes on the league’s message board: “I might be last…but I am leading in the demo.”
