John Heilemann Makes Lindsey Graham Joke on ‘Morning Joe;’ Edited Out of 8am Reair

Just after 6am, on “Morning Joe” this morning, Joe, Mika and guest John Heilemann were talking about yesterday’s New York Times article about “the three amigos” Senators John McCain, Joe Lieberman and Lindsey Graham, who have bonded over the last decade through international travel putting themselves at the center of the foreign policy debate at home.

With Lieberman leaving the Senate, McCain and Graham have brought in another “amigo” Senator Kelly Ayotte. That prompted Heilemann to make a bad joke, at the expense of Graham:

Heilemann: They need a third amigo at all times. So now they have — now two of the three are women — now at least one of the three are women.

That drew hysterical laughter from Scarborough who had to turn his chair around. Mika Brzezinski took over and brought in Andrea Mitchell as Scarborough and Heilemann composed themselves.

The line was edited out of a re-air at 8amET. You’ll recall it was “Morning Joe” regular Mark Halperin, Heilemann’s co-author on “Game Change” who drew a suspension 17 months ago for his “Morning Joe” comment about Pres. Obama being “kind of a dick.”

Glenn Beck Begins Week of ‘Restoring’ Events in Israel

Ahead of Wednesday’s Restoring Courage event in Israel, Glenn Beck took over an outdoor amphitheater built by King Herod 2,000 years ago. About 3,000 people filled the theater adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea in the town of Caesarea Sunday. See more photos here.

Beck arrived in Israel last week and has been hosting his radio show from there since last Monday. Tonight, he’s holding a gathering at the Old Train Station Plaza in central Jerusalem, with a focus on a remembrance of the Holocaust. The main event is set for Wednesday night at Jerusalem’s Davidson Center. Yesterday, Sen. Joe Lieberman pulled out of speaking at the event citing family reasons. All of the events are being carried on Beck’s GBTV.

Sen. Joe Lieberman on Imus: ‘Fox Business is my favorite…anything Rupert Murdoch owns’

Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) was on “Imus in The Morning” today. After giving CNN credit for turning down anonymous WikiLeaks sources, Don Imus chimed in “I hate CNN. I wish you hadn’t brought that up.”

“But of course, really, Fox Business is my favorite,” the senator told Imus, “and Fox generally, anything Rupert Murdoch owns.”

Big Rig Chase Brings Pause to Specter News

cnn_4-28.jpgAt 3pmET today, Fox News and CNN began covering a high speed pursuit along busy I-75 north of Atlanta. This pursuit was unique on several fronts – a big rig was being chased, and its driver was clinging to the back, presumably having been carjacked.

Also rare, was CNN’s airing of the chase live. The network has historically left the reporting of high speed pursuits to HLN, which also carried the chase live. MSNBC began taking the chase at 3:05pmET after a live interview with Sen. Joe Lieberman about Arlen Specter‘s jump to the democratic party.

It was about that time that CNN stopped airing the chase live. Minutes later, the presumed driver of the truck jumped to safety as the truck rolled to a stop. The suspect was pulled out of the cab surrounded by more than two-dozen officers and taken into custody.

Couric Sits Down With Lieberman (and Letterman)

couric_11-19.JPGKatie Couric will interview Sen. Joe Lieberman today in Washington, D.C. to air tonight on the CBS Evening News. It’s his first interview since it was announced he will hold on to his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

Couric will be back in New York by this evening, and will appear on the Late Show with David Letterman.

The last time Couric was on Letterman, she didn’t know it. It was September 25 as she interviewed Sen. John McCain on the Evening News set. Letterman aired parts of the pre-taped interview and blasted McCain for canceling on him, only to appear with Couric.

Anoka Native Carlson Profiled

carlson_9-4.JPGFox & Friends co-host Gretchen Carlson is back in Minnesota this week (she’s originally from Anoka, MN), and she’s profiled in several local papers.

Amy Carlson Gustafson
of the St. Paul Pioneer Press has a Q&A with Carlson. She describes being caught in a protest this week. “When I came out that group of protesters who were problematic throughout the day, they came storming up one of the side streets and that’s when they did their most damage at Macy’s,” she said. “I was right there. I was a little unnerved.”

She made it out — but didn’t make it out to the vast array of parties all week. “In this job there’s a lot hanging on us and we have to get our sleep and study so that we do a good job each day. That’s really important,” she said.

In an even more local paper, the East Central Minnesota Post Review, Carlson is trailed for a day in which she and her co-anchors interview Sen. Joe Lieberman. She also talks about being home. “I still consider this home and I’m still a rabid Minnesota Vikings fan,” she said.

Sunday Show Preview

And now, St. Paul.

• On Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace speaks with Sen. John McCain. It will be McCain’s first sit down interview since announcing Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

• On CBS, Bob Schieffer sits down with Rudy Giuliani, who is a keynote speaker at the RNC. Also, on Face the Nation, Sen. Joe Lieberman and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, as Gustav and possibly Hanna, head for his state.

• Gov. Tim Pawlenty is Tom Brokaw’s guest on NBC’s Meet the Press. And the roundtable of Doris Kearns Goodwin, David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell and Mike Murphy.

Cablers on the McCain Veep Chase

MSNBCPalin_8.29.jpgWith less than two and a half hours until his official announcement, TV journalists are scrambling to confirm that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is his pick for Vice President. Fox News and NBC News are confirming that Govs. Tim Pawlenty and Mitt Romney are out of the running, with Palin’s name surfacing onto the news networks just this morning.

At 7:10am Fox News reported a plane had left Anchorage overnight en route to Ohio. CNN reported Palin’s name in the mix at 7:37am. MSNBC began discussing her name a couple minutes later. But by 7:57am, on Morning Joe, NBC’s Washington bureau chief Mark Whitaker said, “Our David Gregory is just reporting that his sources within the McCain campaign are telling him ‘no’” about a Palin pick. Still, Palin’s name played prominently for the next hour.

Then at 9:14, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough reported, “Joe Lieberman is in Dayton.”

So, as of 9:30amET, no one has confirmed a pick. The McCain campaign is doing a heck of a job making sure the reporters can’t report, only speculate.

And, is it us, or does Palin look a bit like TV president Mackenzie Allen, played by Gena Davis in the short-lived 2005-06 ABC show “Commander-in-Chief?”
