With Lieberman leaving the Senate, McCain and Graham have brought in another “amigo” Senator Kelly Ayotte. That prompted Heilemann to make a bad joke, at the expense of Graham:

Heilemann: They need a third amigo at all times. So now they have — now two of the three are women — now at least one of the three are women.

That drew hysterical laughter from Scarborough who had to turn his chair around. Mika Brzezinski took over and brought in Andrea Mitchell as Scarborough and Heilemann composed themselves.

The line was edited out of a re-air at 8amET. You’ll recall it was “Morning Joe” regular Mark Halperin, Heilemann’s co-author on “Game Change” who drew a suspension 17 months ago for his “Morning Joe” comment about Pres. Obama being “kind of a dick.”

Ahead of Wednesday’s Restoring Courage event in Israel, Glenn Beck took over an outdoor amphitheater built by King Herod 2,000 years ago. About 3,000 people filled the theater adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea in the town of Caesarea Sunday. See more photos here.

Beck arrived in Israel last week and has been hosting his radio show from there since last Monday. Tonight, he’s holding a gathering at the Old Train Station Plaza in central Jerusalem, with a focus on a remembrance of the Holocaust. The main event is set for Wednesday night at Jerusalem’s Davidson Center. Yesterday, Sen. Joe Lieberman pulled out of speaking at the event citing family reasons. According to an internal memo from Tribune DC bureau chief Kerry Luft, Gold will start after Labor Day, where she will be helping out with Tribune’s coverage of the 2010 midterm elections.

Also rare, was CNN’s airing of the chase live. The network has historically left the reporting of high speed pursuits to HLN, which also carried the chase live. MSNBC began taking the chase at 3:05pmET after a live interview with Sen. Joe Lieberman about Arlen Specter‘s jump to the democratic party.

It was about that time that CNN stopped airing the chase live. Minutes later, the presumed driver of the truck jumped to safety as the truck rolled to a stop. The suspect was pulled out of the cab surrounded by more than two-dozen officers and taken into custody.

Couric will be back in New York by this evening, and will appear on the Late Show with David Letterman.

The last time Couric was on Letterman, she didn’t know it. It was September 25 as she interviewed Sen. John McCain on the Evening News set. Letterman aired parts of the pre-taped interview and blasted McCain for canceling on him, only to appear with Couric.

She made it out — but didn’t make it out to the vast array of parties all week. “In this job there’s a lot hanging on us and we have to get our sleep and study so that we do a good job each day. That’s really important,” she said.

In an even more local paper, the East Central Minnesota Post Review, Carlson is trailed for a day in which she and her co-anchors interview Sen. Joe Lieberman. She also talks about being home. “I still consider this home and I’m still a rabid Minnesota Vikings fan,” she said.

At 7:10am Fox News reported a plane had left Anchorage overnight en route to Ohio. CNN reported Palin’s name in the mix at 7:37am. MSNBC began discussing her name a couple minutes later. But by 7:57am, on Morning Joe, NBC’s Washington bureau chief Mark Whitaker said, “Our David Gregory is just reporting that his sources within the McCain campaign are telling him ‘no’” about a Palin pick. Still, Palin’s name played prominently for the next hour.

Then at 9:14, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough reported, “Joe Lieberman is in Dayton.”

So, as of 9:30amET, no one has confirmed a pick. The McCain campaign is doing a heck of a job making sure the reporters can’t report, only speculate.

And, is it us, or does Palin look a bit like TV president Mackenzie Allen, played by Gena Davis in the short-lived 2005-06 ABC show “Commander-in-Chief?”
