Bob Costas Isn’t a Fan of Derek Jeter’s Website

RobinTeamBCMediabistroTV caught up with several TVNewsers at the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame awards last night. Megyn Kelly and Bob Costas co-hosted the event, which included Robin Roberts (at left with her “Good Morning America” family)¬†among the inductees.

On the red carpet, we got interviews with Costas and former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre who have differing opinions about Derek Jeter‘s new sports site called The Players’ Tribune.

“If that’s going to be the only way that the public ever hears from public figures, in this case ballplayers, then I think in the long run, it’s not a good thing,” Costas tells us. WATCH:

Jalen Rose Sentenced to 20 Days in Jail for Drunk Driving

ESPN basketball commentator Jalen Rose has been sentenced to 20 days in jail for driving while intoxicated, or approximately 3.3 days per martini (six) that Rose admitted to drinking before rolling his Cadillac Escalade in Michigan in March.

Rose will report to the Oakland County Jail on Tuesday to be housed with 1,200 other inmates.

His defense attorney had pleaded with the judge not to send Rose to jail, but to no avail.

“Jalen Rose’s whole life has been about community service,” James Burdick said. “He has accepted his responsibility from the very first day. The most difficult thing Jalen has had to do is sit down with his young children and explain what daddy has done.”

Rose, in a brief statement, said he has been “humbled and humiliated by this process.”

Temperature To Determine Price Of Baylor Football Tickets

Baylor football fans will be glued to Weather.com on the 4th of July as the temperature in Waco, Texas will determine the price of season tickets for the 2011-12 season:

“The high temperature in Waco on July 4th, as recorded by the National Weather Service, will be the price point for all season football tickets sold outside of the premium seating sections at Floyd Casey Stadium from July 5-10. The average high temperature in Waco on Independence Day is 95 degrees with a record high of 101 recorded in 1990.

“While season ticket sales have been brisk, we believe this Independence Day promotion will be attractive to many of our fans who have not yet purchased tickets,” said Baylor’s Executive Associate A.D./External Affairs Nick Joos. “Even if Waco were to record a new high for the 4th, fans would be looking at saving nearly 30 percent off the cost of our Super Fan ticket. Of course, if we were to get a break from the hot weather we’ve had the last month, that discount would give fans an even lower price point at which to purchase season tickets.”

As of Friday night, the National Weather Service is projecting a high of 104 on Monday. Here’s to a low pressure system coming through Texas.

Foxwoods Only Interested in Sponsoring the Last Five Minutes of New York Knicks Broadcasts

You may feel the urge to gamble if you happen to catch the last five minutes of any game on MSG Network during the next five years. Why? Foxwoods will sponsor the final stages of television broadcasts and will take over signage within the arena.

According to statistics, ratings for New York Knicks and New York Rangers games jump 25 percent during the last five minutes. Those numbers, of course, depend a bit on whether the teams are competitive (win streak!) but a sports-marketing consultant tells The New York Times “the upside far, far outweighs the downside.”

In addition to the increased viewership, the final five minutes appeal to advertisers because consumers are engaged. We would think this might be a negative thing since being engaged with the game at hand would mean the viewer wasn’t going to be distracted by advertising, but whatever, we’re not the marketers. Also, the final five can take forever, meaning Foxwoods will be ever-present for a long stretch of time.

ESPN Ombudsman Returns From Summer Vacation

After a two-month hiatus, ESPN Ombudsman Don Ohlmeyer chimed in on his thoughts on ESPN.com pulling Arash Markazi‘s column on LeBron James and the recent arrest of Jay Mariotti.

Writing for the first time since July 21, Ohlmeyer went into great detail the editing process at ESPN.com and why the editors decided to ax Markazi’s recap of a night in Las Vegas with LeBron James.

And no, according to Ohlmeyer, it had nothing to do with protecting their relationship with James:

The more the editors contemplated Markazi’s story and how it was gathered, the less it felt like a news report and the more it felt like tabloid “gotcha” journalism.Since the interaction was not on the record, it became eavesdropping on James’ private life, even in a public place. Reporting on something that ultimately seemed more voyeuristic than important raised pertinent internal questions. Was it fair? Balanced? Were any ethical lines crossed? Is this the kind of journalism ESPN wants to be known for? This is the type of thing we hate when others do it to us, so why would we do it to someone else? King made the final decision not to republish the piece. Read more
