During an appearance on Inside MMA on HDNet, new TNT announcer Shaquille O’Neal was asked who he’d liked to fight if given a chance. Instead of naming five current players, O’Neal went old school and named former players Charles Oakley, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Xavier McDaniel and…Danny Ainge?

He notes that Ainge almost bit off Tree Rollins‘ finger during a fight, so Ainge has a little tenacity to him.

Sporting News Radio Rebranded as Yahoo! Sports Radio

Gow Broadcasting announced today that Sporting News Radio has been rebranded as Yahoo! Sports Radio, a change that will affect about 180 affiliates and will allow content from Yahoo! Sports and Rivals to now be featured on the radio network.

David Gow, chairman of Gow Broadcasting, said the relationship with Yahoo! will include branding, content and promotional elements and is effective immediately. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We’re aligning with the No. 1 sports media web company in the world,” Gow said. “We’re picking up one of the most recognizable brand names in the world. We’re getting access to some of the best sports journalism in the country, and we get to link ourselves together in a way that will accelerate the growth of our digital business.

“When you combine the sports experts of Yahoo and Rivals with our on-air talent and analysts, we believe we will have the best roster in sports radio. And we can take that combined roster and create compelling sports radio, grow our affiliate base and audience size and take our company to much greater heights.”

Gow said the radio network plans to add new shows in collaboration with Yahoo in the next 60 days to reflect the new partnership. Topics could include weekend programs on fantasy sports, mixed martial arts, soccer and golf, he said.

The network’s website will now be YahooSportsRadio.com. The Sporting News Radio brand name had existed since 2001.

Whitlock Criticizes Klosterman for Preferring Breaking Bad to The Wire

Do you watch Breaking Bad, the popular AMC show whose third season premieres this week? And did you watch The Wire, which many people consider the best television series in recent memory? If you answered “no” to both questions, then I’m right there with you. Consequently I will not be moved by reading Chuck Klosterman‘s essay for Grantland.com about why Breaking Bad is better than The Wire. Such is not the case for Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports, who has spent the morning Twitter sniping against Klosterman and his conclusions, even writing, “Klosterman’s next Grantland attention grab: “Why Judas was better than Jesus.”

Coming from a sportswriter like Whitlock, who prides himself on being a contrarian, the irony is rather thick.

Among Whitlock’s tweets about Klosterman’s article:

“I weep for America that that shit was written by a respected thinker. And I really like Breaking Bad.”

“I will block people for pretending to agree with Klosterman. #imnotjoking if u r that stupid, i don’t want to be connected to you.”

Let’s keep in mind that this is one sportswriter calling out another sportswriter for writing an essay about why he prefers one fictional drama series to another. If you’re a sportswriter and you haven’t expanded your brand to include a widespread knowledge of hip, cool shows, you need to get cracking, snappy.

Klosterman once wrote that he’d unabashedly never read any of the Harry Potter books, and would thus have a large gap in his pop culture knowledge when others were quoting or referencing the popular series. Others have the same relationship to Avon Barksdale and Stringer Bell.

ESPN replaced longtime Sunday Night baseball announcer Joe Morgan before this season, creating a large hole in the lives of those listeners who enjoy seeing their blood pressure rise when an old school baseball guy rails against the utilization of sabermetrics. Morgan, whose backwards attitude towards the Moneyball era inspired the creation of the popular and relatively short-lived baseball blog Fire Joe Morgan, was among the four faces on Awful Announcing’s Mount Rushmore of, well, awful announcers. With his removal from ESPN, however, AA has decided to remove him from its monument, too, and will replace him according to readers’ votes. Yes, AA is going to use a 32-person tournament of head-to-head match-ups featuring the ~~likes~~ dislikes of Woody Paige, Skip Bayless, Rick Reilly and Hawk Harrelson. Go here to vote.

The winner will join Pam Ward, Dick Vitale and Tim McCarver.

Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel didn’t think too highly of the Atlanta Hawks’ chances against the Orlando Magic before Game 6 last night.

No matter how much talent they have, the Hawks are still the Hawks. They are still Team Dummy. They will always do stupid things and take stupid shots. They will always lose their focus and their composure.

Because sooner or later, without fail, you just know the Atlanta Hawks will turn back into the Atlanta Birdbrains.

Well, Team Dummy took care of business, beat the Magic and closed out the series. Whoops.

After the game another member of the media asked Josh Smith of the Hawks what he had to say to Bianchi now. Here’s the priceless clip:

The Pro Bowler has signed on to host a weekly talk show on SiriusXM’s 24-hour NFL talk channel.

Jones-Drew will work alongside co-host Bryan McGovern on Late Hits with MJD starting tonight (8:00-10:00 pm ET) and every Tuesday.

Yankees-a-Plenty on Nielsen 'Most Marketable Baseball Players' List

Three New York Yankees made Nielsen’s “Most Marketable Players in Baseball” list, with captain Derek Jeter crushing everyone else. Nielsen measured player marketability using a proprietary statistic, the “N-Score,” which can be applied both nationally and in the player’s local market.

Jeter topped the list with an N-Score of 165, with his teammate Mariano Rivera a distant second at 56. The other Yankee to make the cut was Alex Rodriguez, who placed eighth with an N-Score of 35.

“Derek Jeter is on a tremendous run, with each new endorsement raising his profile with consumers. With a score more than three times his nearest competitor, it’s no wonder he’s been the face for Nike, Gatorade, Fleet Bank, Ford, VISA and more,” said Stephen Master, VP, Nielsen Sports. “While many of the players may not have national visibility, locally their brands resonate at a very strong level, with some having local N-Scores almost 10 times that of their national one.”

Comedy Central Orders Norm Macdonald Sports Show

Comedy Central has given the green light to a weekly sports comedy program hosted by comedian Norm Macdonald, titled, appropriately enough, “Sports Show with Norm Macdonald.”

The program will premiere on Comedy Central in March.

“I’m excited and look forward to doing this series,” said Macdonald in a statement. “On this show, we plan to put the central back in Comedy Central.”

The show is part “Daily Show,” part “Tosh.0 and part “Onion SportsDome,” with Macdonald discussing topical sports issues in front of a live audience.

Comedy Central made a big push into sports earlier this year with the Onion SportsDome. “Sports Show” could be used as a natural partner with SportsDome in Comedy’s primetime lineup.

Dick Ebersol to Receive Tartikoff Award from NATPE

NBC Sports & Olympics chairman Dick Ebersol is one of the recipients of the 8th annual Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards, which will be handed out at the NATPE 2011 conference in Miami, Florida.

The awards are named after former NBC programming chief Brandon Tartikoff, who died from Hodgkins disease. The other recipients are “Entertainment Tonight” host Mary Hart, “Live! with Regis & Kelly” co-host Regis Philbin and RTL Group CEO Gerhard Zeiler.

“We believe that Dick, Mary, Regis and Gerhard have remarkably shaped the global television industry on both business and pop cultural levels, and truly embody the spirit of the Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award,” said NATPE CEO Rick Feldman in a statement. “Both NATPE and Lilly Tartikoff Karatz are delighted to honor the recipients’ storied careers through this special celebration.”
