Barbara Walters Farewell: ‘True, I Was the First Female Co-Host… But Also True, I Was a Flop’

WaltersSawyerIt was a star-studded farewell for Barbara Walters at New York City’s Four Seasons restaurant tonight. From comedian Joan Rivers to commissioner Bill Bratton; from New York’s chronicler of scandal, Cindy Adams, to the man who plays the president on “Scandal,” Tony Goldwyn; from actor Woody Allen to attorney David Boies, But mostly, the pool room was packed with Walters’ fellow TV news colleagues and those ladies — past and present — from “The View.” Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd; Meredith Vieira and Joy Behar.

Following a best of Barbara video, Disney Chairman Bob Iger welcomed the crowd, before Walters delivered a few words of thanks and admitting it hasn’t always been easy. “True, I was the first female co-host of a network news program. But also true, I was a flop. My male co-host didn’t want a partner and neither did the audience. I was drowning, gasping for air. Then someone threw me that life preserver called Specials with the biggest stars in news and show business and I learned how to swim again.”

Current and former evening news anchors were there, including Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams who arrived with Tom Brokaw, Katie Couric and fiancé John Molner; and Connie Chung (who was part of an ill-fated co-anchor pairing with Dan Rather) and husband Maury Povich. We caught up with early risers Savannah Guthrie and George Stephanopoulos along with their spouses, Mike Feldman, and Ali Wentworth, respectively, as they were heading out. Guthrie’s “Today” colleague Al Roker and his wife, ABC correspondent Deborah Roberts made the rounds as well.

Walters continued: “I’m grateful to the legendary Roone Arledge for bringing me to ABC News; thankful to David Westin for his steady leadership; to Ben Sherwood – you made us all believe we could win and with your leadership and passion, we did; and James Goldston – I’m told that all our shows are number one at the moment – you should quit right now.” Sherwood, Goldston and Westin were all on hand, as were other ABC News executives including Barbara Fedida, David Sloan, Jeanmarie Condon and John Green.

We spotted Jenny McCarthy hand-in-hand with fiance Donnie Wahlberg; the “Nightline” team of Juju ChangDan Abrams, and Dan Harris as well as a host of correspondents and anchors from ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and Fox, including Elizabeth VargasAmy RobachDavid MuirNorah O’DonnellJon KarlGio Benitez, Dr. Richard Besser, Tory JohnsonRick Klein, Brian Ross, Mara Schiavocampo, Thomas RobertsAlicia MenendezHoda Kotb, Greta Van Susteren and Lisa Ling, a former “View” co-host, now woking on a new show for CNN.

Greta Van Susteren’s Husband John Coale Battling Cancer

Attorney, TV commentator and political adviser John Coale is battling cancer. His wife, Fox News Channel anchor Greta Van Susteren, revealed the news on her blog, GretaWire.

Van Susteren says that he was diagnosed in December, and has undergone a number of surgeries since.

I worked during all those surgeries (did our show) because I did not want to draw attention to us and have to answer a million questions (I didn’t even know the answers to the questions!) I would do OTR, then after the show drive an hour to the hospital in Baltimore…spend the night in his room….and the next morning…drive home …get dressed…and go to Fox and repeat the cycle after the show. I felt lucky to be able to do that since many families can not.

Coale  also served as an adviser to former Fox News contributor Sarah Palin, among other politicians and notable figures.

Should Greta Van Susteren Disclose Husband’s Friendship with Herman Cain?

As we told you yesterday, John Coale, Greta Van Susteren‘s husband helped arrange a dinner with Herman Cain and several media bigwigs, including Van Susteren, in New York this weekend. But due to Cain’s personal issues, that dinner has been canceled. Reports then began to surface that Coale is advising Cain. (As for the dinner, Coale says Cain had called him up and asked him to phone his friend, New York gossip queen Cindy Adams who invited the guests.)

So, is it fair to say John Coale is a Cain adviser? And should Van Susteren mention this on her show, especially when she’s discussing the Cain campaign, as she did last night during a conversation with Brit Hume?

On the first question, both Coale and Greta say “no.” On GretaWire she writes that her husband has a lot of friends in Washington:

As friends, he gives them advice, and they give him advice….he tells them things and they tell him things. It is all part of living in Washington. Many in the media have spouses – unlike my husband – who actually WORK for politicians and or in government. Let me repeat, my husband does NOT WORK for any of them and NEVER HAS.

As for the second question, we asked Fox News and Bill Shine, who oversees primetime shows, including Van Susteren’s says Greta’s blog post is enough of a disclosure. Shine refused to answer why she didn’t mention the friendship, or advice-giving, or dinner-arranging, or whatever you call it, on air.

You’ll recall, Van Susteren got the first interview with Cain and his wife earlier this month following the sexual harassment allegations.

Herman Cain Cancels Dinner with Matt Lauer, Bill O’Reilly, Barbara Walters and Greta Van Susteren

GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain–who is said to be reassessing his campaign–canceled dinner with a bevy of New York media bigwigs scheduled for Sunday, according to NY1.

Among the attendees: Fox News hosts Bill O’Reilly and Greta Van Susteren (Van Susteren’s husband John Coale organized the meeting), NBC’s Matt Lauer, ABC’s Barbara Walters, CBS’ Lesley Stahl and Senator Chuck Schumer.

Greta Van Susteren to attend Kim Kardashian – Kris Humphries Wedding

FishbowlDC reports FNC host Greta Van Susteren and her husband John Coale will be guests at Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries‘ $10 million wedding extravaganza in Montecito, CA tomorrow. About that Sarah Palin ‘idiot’ comment: ‘When Roger figures out who that is, I guarantee you he or she will no longer be ‘close to Ailes’

FNC EVP Bill Shine is disputing a claim in this week’s New York magazine opus about Fox News Channel. In it, an unnamed Republican claims Fox News CEO & Chairman Roger Ailes considered Fox News analyst Sarah Palin to be, “an idiot.” Here’s the direct quote:

“He thinks things are going in a bad direction,” another Republican close to Ailes told me. “Roger is worried about the future of the country. He thinks the election of Obama is a disaster. He thinks Palin is an idiot. He thinks she’s stupid. He helped boost her up. People like Sarah Palin haven’t elevated the conservative movement.”

“I know for a fact that Roger Ailes admires and respects Sarah Palin and thinks she is smart,” Shine tells the New York Times. “He also believes many members of the left wing media are extremely terrified and threatened by her. Despite a massive effort to destroy Sarah Palin, she is still on her feet and making a difference in the political world. As for the ‘Republican close to Ailes’ for which the incorrect Palin quote is attributed, when Roger figures out who that is, I guarantee you he or she will no longer be ‘close to Ailes.’”

Meanwhile, John Coale, a Palin friend and husband of Fox News host Greta Van Susteren weighs in to Politico, “I know both Roger and Sarah quite well, and nothing could be further from the truth than the unnamed ‘Republican’ who said Roger thinks Palin is an idiot.” Palin was the guest of Van Susteren/Coale at the White House Correspondents Dinner festivities last month (right).

Correspondents’ Dinner: Kim Kardashian holds Court at Tammy Haddad’s Power Brunch

Kim Kardashian with FNC’s Greta Van Susteren and her husband John Coale at the annual Garden Party at the home of Tammy Haddad ahead of tonight’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

What’s a brunch without Kim Kardashian, Sherry Shepard, the Jonas Brothers, Chevy Chase, Rupert Murdoch and a couple hundred DC newsers?

The annual Garden Party at the home of ultimate DC media insider Tammy Haddad and her husband Ted Greenberg draws bigger boldface names with each passing year. This year’s brunch was dedicated to CURE Epilepsy and the Mother’s Day Everyday campaign. Susan Axelrod, wife of Pres. Obama adviser David Axelrod, was honorary chairwoman. The Axelrods’ daughter Lauren lives with uncontrollable epilepsy.

The Jonas Brothers pulled up just after we arrived. In addition to Chase, Shepard and Murdoch, with his wife Wendi Deng at his side, DC’s media elite rubbed shoulders under the tents. Kardashian, a guest of Van Susteren and Fox News, kept her mini-fan in hand during the 89-degree day. She’d taken the red-eye in, but stayed and chatted with the crowd for about an hour before heading out.

NBC/MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell has a big fan in the actor Steven Weber. “I watch MSNBC all the time,” said the “Happy Town” star with his former “Wings” wingman Tim Daly nearby.

Greta’s Husband Tried to Bring Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton Together

coale_5-19.jpgIt’s hard to imagine it would ever happen — that Gov. Sarah Palin would help pay down some of the campaign debt of Hillary Clinton. But Politico reports not only was a plan hatched, but that the person who tried to facilitate it was John Coale, who Politico describes as a “Washington-area Democratic donor and onetime adviser” to Palin.

Coale is also the husband of Fox News host Greta Van Susteren, whose had some of the most extensive coverage of the Palin family, including the first post-election interview with Gov. Palin, the first post-nomination interview with Todd Palin and the first interview with Bristol Palin after she gave birth. In March, Van Susteren denied that her husband’s ties to Palin helped get her the interviews.

As for the Palin-Clinton plan, Politico’s Jonathan Martin writes:

In conference calls and e-mails with Palin advisers over subsequent weeks, Coale continued to raise the prospect of using SarahPAC to help [Hillary] Clinton, who was once public enemy No. 1 among the very Republicans who are Palin’s most ardent followers.

The Politico story quotes several unattributed sources who spoke out in opposition of the suggestion, including one “dumbfounded Republican privy to the discussion who advocated fiercely against the idea.”

Coale tells TVNewser, “The Politico story puts a weird spin on it. What really happened was that I suggested to Palin that she make a gesture, woman to woman, i.e. make a contribution to Clinton…I feel that the more Democrats and Republicans talk to each other, the less they attack each other. So much for peace making. Maybe it is the media and staff that keeps up the fighting.”

Greta Responds to Reports Her Husband is Advising Palin

greta_3-19.jpgAfter a report in the Washington Post said Greta Van Susteren‘s husband, John Coale, was “essentially helping to run Sarah PAC,” (Sarah Palin‘s political action committee), the FNC anchor responded today on her blog.

“No, he is not a paid adviser to Governor Palin and never has been,” she writes. “And no, he does not want a job with her or with the other women he has helped.”

So who’s spreading the rumors? Greta writes: “It is no doubt the enemies of the people who got so upset when my husband has helped Speaker Pelosi and Secretary Clinton and spread the opposite rumors. Some people get so bent out of shape by what they imagine.”
