The “silver spoon” comment in the context of the speech seemed to be a swipe against Romney, whose father George Romney was the top executive of a major car company and a former governor of Michigan. But the President was able to maintain plausible deniability until Steve Doocy of Fox News came along. While interviewing Romney on live TV Thursday, Doocy quoted Obama as saying, “Unlike some people, I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.”

Update: A Fox News spokesperson tells TVNewser that Doocy will clarify the remark tomorrow morning. That is more than NBC News could say after its misleading George Zimmerman edit came to light.

While it seems like a slight against Romney, CBS News’ John Dickerson writes that Obama has used that term so much since 2008 that it is “cliche.”

Dickerson’s mother Nancy was CBS News’s first female correspondent in 1960. In a 2009 profile, Dickerson told TVNewser, “I grew up hearing about CBS. When Mom started, she worked with Ed Murrow and Eric Sevareid and Don Hewitt. She revered them. That was the sort of water I grew up in.”

NBC News president Steve Capus and “Today” show EP Jim Bell — who’d both just returned from London covering the Royal Wedding and sharing ratings info on his Blackberry. We chatted up CNBC’s Rick Santelli, in from Chicago, Carl Quintanilla and Hampton Pearson. NBC’s Janet Shamlian, and Kelly O’Donnell and MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan and Contessa Brewer, now almost four months along. Ed Schultz was proud to tell us he’s overtaken Anderson Cooper in the ratings at 10pm, in just his third month on the air. “Big news,” says big Ed.

Meanwhile, over at the Bloomberg/Vanity Fair party, tipsters tell us Jake Tapper, Dave Price, John Dickerson, Chris Isham, Gayle King, and Seth Meyers [who'd poked fun at the thought that the Bloomberg party was a hot ticket], were still in full party mode at 2:15am. “The patio is still packed,” we were emailed. “They started serving breakfast snacks.”

On Monday, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow were among several people who attended an off-the-record briefing with Pres. Obama at the White House. Sources tell us other attendees at the two-and-a-half hour chat included Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Gwen Ifill of PBS and Gloria Borger of CNN. Perhaps not surprisingly, no one from Fox News was in the room.

This fact quickly turned into ammunition for the folks at FOX. Last night on “Special Report,” Bret Baier revealed the information pointing out that opinion hosts from one channel were being invited to a briefing with the Commander-in-Chief, all the while Fox was declared not a news organization.

And it continued on Fox & Friends this morning, as the troika talked about the back-and-forth ABC News White House correspondent Jake Tapper had with press secretary Robert Gibbs in the morning off-camera gaggle yesterday.

[However, co-anchor Gretchen Carlson didn't have her facts correct when she said, "in this reporter gaggle was Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann who are opinion people over at MSNBC." Maddow and Olbermann were in the off-the-record briefing on Monday not the on-the-record gaggle on Tuesday.]

It was more than talent that led John Dickerson to join CBS News this week.

It was genetic destiny.

His mother, pioneering newswoman Nancy Dickerson, in 1960 was named CBS’s first female correspondent. The first woman to break into the Washington TV news corps, she covered all the iconic events of the era and had close relationships with Presidents Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.

Dickerson fils acknowledges that blood “probably played into my decision” to sign with CBS Monday as a part-time political analyst and contributor.

“I grew up hearing about CBS,” says Dickerson, 40, chief political correspondent for slate.com and former CNN analyst. “When Mom started, she worked with Ed Murrow and Eric Sevareid and Don Hewitt. She revered them. That was the sort of water I grew up in.”

Dickerson was drowning, however. Mother and son didn’t forge a connection until a few years before she died in 1997 at 70 from complications from a stroke. He chronicled the relationship in 2006′s On Her Trail: My Mother, Nancy Dickerson.
