Because the book is written under a pseudonym, the author will appear in disguise during television interviews to promote the book. At least one major network prime-time appearance has been planned, a person familiar with the plans said, and during interviews on television and radio, the author’s voice will be altered.

Which primetime show will the author be appearing on? CBS “60 Minutes” sounds like a good fit, though other networks would probably make accommodations if it meant getting an exclusive.

Of course, he may not have to hide anymore. Fox News Channel’s Justin Fishel claims to have uncovered the identity of the SEAL in question, and reports that he could face legal ramifications.

Update: Fox News released a statement from executive VP and executive editor John Moody regarding the decision to publish the name:

“Once you write a book, anonymously or not, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.”

Moody was EVP of news editorial at FNC for 13 years before leaving the network in 2009 to oversee Newscore, News Corp.’s global wire service. Newscore will be absorbed by Fox News going forward, a move that Fox News chairman Roger Ailes said would “strengthen our overall newsgathering capabilities and enable us to operate at an even higher level.”

Clemente will continue to oversee Fox News editorial and run day-to-day operations for the news division, while Moody will oversee the network’s digital assets, including foxnews.com. Moody will also act as a senior advisor to Ailes.

“John’s extensive experience in news for the past several decades both in television and in print remain unmatched in the industry,” Ailes said in a statement. “John helped us become the number one news network and I look forward to working closely with him again.”

Moody left Fox News in April to help launch News Core, a system that will instantly link News Corp.’s worldwide outlets to the latest global news stories.

The Guardian reports, “NewsCore will act as a worldwide news wire to link the company’s TV, print and online outlets to breaking developments around the world.” The paper reports a formal launch date for News Core has not yet been announced.

Friedman was fired in April, but he claims his troubles began last year.

Last August, Friedman went to Memphis for the funeral of his friend and R&B legend Isaac Hayes, who was a Scientologist. Preston was also in town for the funeral. Friedman tells us that when Preston saw him at the Peabody Hotel, Mrs. John Travolta loudly blasted him for his columns criticizing Scientology.

The following month, says an ally of Friedman, Preston voiced her complaints about Friedman to Fox News chief Roger Ailes and his then-EVP, John Moody.

“Moody talked to her on the phone,” says the source. “When she couldn’t get Moody to fire Friedman, she called him a [obscenity].”

The Daily news reports that Ailes and Moody later agreed to meet with Preston and a Church of Scientology spokesman.

Clemente talked about the success of Fox News. “We usually say here and elsewhere, it always feels better to win,” he said. “Winning in this business means getting the story right, and people understand that over time. I think, they understand that our people care about what they’re saying, they’re as interested in what they’re reporting on as the viewers might be, and it all comes through. At the end of the day, when we’re done doing our jobs, and you get a report on the numbers…it’s a good feeling.”

Clemente described the “humbling” experience of coming over to Fox News in February, and said of FNC’s daytime success: “I think people trust what they’re hearing.”

He now moves into the role previously held by John Moody. “I think the project that John is on is going to be terrific for News Corp.,” says Clemente of Moody’s new position. “And maybe even for people beyond News Corp. at a certain point. Who knows what can happen tomorrow? It’s a great place. Things just happen. They want to make things happen — if you see an opportunity, go for it.”

Also discussed: the differences (and similarities) between network and cable news, some possible weekend programming changes, advice Moody gave Clemente and, why not, the American Idol finale last night.

Moody, known for sending out a daily editorial note to the staff, made the announcement in that note this morning.

“This is the last editorial note I’ll be writing,” he wrote. Moody announced that beginning today he is taking a new job with parent company News Corp. Moody expressed his gratitude to FNC founder and chairman Roger Ailes and to News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch.

Michael Clemente, who joined Fox News from ABC in February, will oversee daily editorial duties for the network.

Bill Sammon becomes a VP of Fox News and Washington managing editor. “Assuming the title held by Brit Hume is daunting, but Bill, who has been Deputy M.E. for the past six months, has brought energy, leadership and inspired thinking to the office every day,” says the memo. “As Managing Editor, Bill has ultimate authority on editorial matters in Washington. He will report to me.”

Bureau manager Bryan Boughton has been promoted to Washington bureau chief. “Bryan led our coverage through the 2008 presidential campaign, the conventions, election night and the Obama Administration’s rise to power,” said the memo.

FNC SVP Bill Shine says, “All I know is that over the course of the next four years, we’re going to do what we do really well — cover the news in a fair and balanced way and put on a very good product.”

But, as EVP of news editorial John Moody notes, “Will we give this incoming administration a Greek chorus of exaltation? No, but that speaks more about the other networks than about us.”

On the economic side, Brad Adgate, SVP for research at Horizon Media, says FNC is on “firm financial footing” in 2009. Adgate says FNC has “created appointment viewing on slow news days” and that “audience loyalty allow Fox to charge higher rates.”

Eric Alterman, liberal media columnist and author of “What Liberal Media?” sees FNC in a good spot with the new administration. “Fox is in a much better position with a liberalish Democrat in the White House than they were with a Republican,” he says.

But former White House press secretary Scott McClellan notes where FNC is likely to lose one household. “They’re certainly going to lose some market share at the White House,” said McClellan.

This afternoon a tipster pointed us to the Fox Forum blog on Foxnews.com, where EVP of news editorial John Moody wrote a blog post last night about the incident (apparently Moody’s been blogging since May — we’ll have to check it out more).

Moody writes, “If Ms. Todd’s allegations are proven accurate, some voters may revisit their support for Senator Obama, not because they are racists (with due respect to Rep. John Murtha), but because they suddenly feel they do not know enough about the Democratic nominee.”

But, “If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting,” he concludes.

Moody tells TVNewser today: “Certainly this was a difficult situation for the McCain campaign, but thank goodness Fox’s actual reporting of the incident was more accurate than my blog.”

I am convinced that if there were no Fox News, I might be two or three points higher in the polls. If I were watching Fox News, I wouldn’t vote for me, right? Because the way I’m portrayed 24/7 is as a freak! I am the latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal. Who wants somebody like that?

In reaction to Sen. Obama’s comments, Fox News EVP of News Editorial John Moody tells TVNewser, “Senator Obama’s comments about Fox News are misdirected. If he is uncomfortable with tough questions, it may be because he has faced so few from the news media. The McCain campaign also complains when we make them squirm. We will continue to do hard, honest reporting and let American viewers decide if we’re being fair.”

Matthews commented, “Fox News, for example, seems to enjoy it. No accident they hired Howard Wolfson, used him in some sort of little toy soldier waiting on the shelf.”

“Tokyo Rose was the thought that came to my mind,” added Olbermann.

Politico reports FNC’s John Moody, EVP for news editorial, fired back today and managed to take a shot at John Edwards, too.

Keith is too important to be constrained (restrained might be a different matter) by facts. He is the heir to Huntley, to Brinkley, to Chancellor, to Brokaw. (Sorry, NBC). Keith thinks Democrats shouldn’t deign to appear on FOX. That’s the same philosophy that served John Edwards so well when he was an active candidate (among other things). Like Sen. Edwards, Keith is a non-factor now that the real decisions have been made. And like Tokyo Rose, he is a fictional conflation.
