John Oliver Prepares to Take Over As Cable News Critic-In-Chief

Next week, comedian John Oliver will take over as the host of “The Daily Show,” while Jon Stewart takes the Summer off to direct a movie. In advance of the move, Oliver is doing what Stewart did only rarely: talk to the media.

In a handful of interviews, the man who will effectively become the cable news “critic-in-chief” talks ratings, TV news and the voice of the show.

Will the voice of “The Daily Show” change when you’re its anchor?

The voice is going to change, in so far as words are going to be pronounced accurately. And there are going to be a lot more u’s on the prompter. I don’t want to see c-o-l-o-r on the prompter or there’s going to be hell to pay. I’ve been here seven years, so the voice of the show has moved into my DNA as well. I don’t know if it’s going to be particularly recognizable, other than there’s going to be a different face and a different sounding voice saying it.

‘The Daily Show’ Investigates Investigative Journalism

“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” last night dedicated a segment to investigative journalism. Specifically, the program used a story we broke last year about CNN restructuring its long-form content unit, and moved it forward by talking to one of the reporters affected by the cuts. We won’t spoil it, but as John Oliver discovered, the reporter, Kaj Larsen, has a very interesting new job.

In what is likely John King‘s acting debut, the CNN correspondent took part in an “Enemy of the State“-like segment revolving around the “journalistic super-weapon,” the “Magic Wall.”

First John Oliver talked to the “diabolical genius behind the touch screen,” Jeff Han.

But it quickly turned into a conspiracy plot, that King was perpetrating. “Was John King working for CNN or the military? Hold on, did John King run the military?!” asked Oliver as eerie music played in the background.

There was a tension-filled meeting in Williams-Sonoma, a face-morphing sex scene — and we won’t spoil the surprise ending, but that “Magic Wall” has some never-before-scene powers.

CNN Packs The Grill

The CNN Grill, located directly outside the Pepsi Center, was packed on Monday night as the convention wound down for Day 1. But after the convention ended for the night, it became standing room only.

The various CNN-related drinks and free food drew many in, as did the prime real estate.

Besides the big name political figures (also, Caroline Kennedy sat down for a post convention meal with her whole family), there were the real celebs as well. Joe Pantoliano and The Daily Show duo of Jason Jones and John Oliver were among those in attendance.

A huge outdoor area, where an Election Express bus is currently parked, and a broadcast set right in the middle of the action make the locale a unique spot.
