John Reiss Named Acting EP of ‘Meet the Press’

chuck todd mtp 2First on TVNewser: “Meet the Press” isn’t just getting a new moderator, a new Executive Producer is joining as well.

John Reiss, who has been EP of “Hardball with Chris Matthews” for the last 7 years, has been named acting EP of the show just as Chuck Todd takes over as host. Before MSNBC, Reiss spent two years as EP of “NBC Nightly News.” He’s been with NBC News since 1994, joining as a producer for “Dateline.” Before that, Reiss spent 11 years at ABC News as a writer and producer.

Reiss replaces Rob Yarin who joined the Sunday public affairs show last summer. Yarin will stay on with the MTP, overseeing ongoing projects including its digital presence. On Friday, Betsy Fischer Martin, who spent 11 years as MTP EP, and 23 years in all with NBC, left the company.

Pat Burkey Named EP of ‘NBC Nightly News’

As we first reported yesterday, and is now official, Pat Burkey has been named Executive Producer of “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams,” replacing Bob Epstein who was named VP of NBC News Specials on Tuesday.

“We’re replacing a friend with a friend, a news veteran with a news veteran,” says Williams in a press release announcing the news. “Bob Epstein has led the broadcast brilliantly — and Pat is a much-loved member of the family. Everyone gets to move up — and that’s great news for everyone at NBC News.”

Burkey joined NBC News in 1995 producing the NBC NewsChannel-produced “Nightside.” He joined MSNBC at launch 15 years ago this month. In 2000, Burkey moved to Williams’s MSNBC newscast “The News” before joining “NBC Nightly News” in 2004.

Burkey is Williams’s 5th EP in the almost 7 years he’s been the anchor and managing editor, starting with Steve Capus who was bumped upstairs — and is now NBC News president — in 2004-2005, John Reiss from 2005-2007 (now EP of MSNBC’s “Hardball”), Alexandra Wallace from 2007-2008 (a VP and deputy to Capus), and Epstein from 2008-2011.

This Baby’s Ready to play ‘Hardball’

“Hardball” EP John Reiss and his wife, former NBC News political director Elizabeth Wilner welcomed Jocelyn Haley Reiss into the world Tuesday. In an email to colleagues, Reiss wrote, “Taking after her mom, Jocelyn is beautiful, smart and inquired about the latest polling data. Taking after her dad, she asked how the Yankees did last night and, upon hearing that they lost, cried. Mom is a miracle worker and is doing just great. Dad is smitten and sitting in slack-jawed wonder.”

John Reiss Upped at MSNBC

“Hardball” EP John Reiss has added the title of executive producer of MSNBC’s Political Programming. Reiss will continue on “Hardball” while also overseeing “The Ed Show” and other MSNBC political programs.

Reiss joined MSNBC in 2007 after serving as EP of NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams from 2005 until March of 2007.
