Behind the TV Scenes: Yahoo! News’ Tony Maciulis

YahooTony Maciulis, Head of News, Yahoo Studios, has been Katie Couric‘s right hand since 2007. In fact,  Couric often says that they “share a brain.”

Couric is now the Yahoo Global News Anchor, so Maciulis has moved into the digital space where he is making a significant impact after only six months.

TVNewser caught up with Maciulis during a busy week, as Couric prepared for an exclusive interview with embattled actor Stephen Collins. 

TVNewser: You’ve been with Katie at various locations, three to be exact. How did you team up in the first place?

Tony Maciulis: I was a senior producer at MSNBC and I worked very closely with Rick Kaplan, who was then the president of MSNBC and he left to go and become Katie’s executive producer for “Evening News.” When he left, and took that position to replace Rome Hartman he started working with [Katie] and felt I would be a good match, so he introduced us and we hit it off and have been working together ever since.

Johnny Weir, Tara Lipinski Will Lead Skating Coverage for 2018 Olympics

Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski announced on the “Today” show Wednesday that they’ve been named NBC Sports’ lead figure skating announcer team for the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The duo joined Tamron Hall in the Orange Room and Weir jokingly announced, “we’re pregnant” before announcing the real news.

  • Sam Champion‘s Weather Channel show isn’t being called “Your Morning Champion,” because, as Champion puts it, “the cheese factor would be so intensly high that I wouldn’t want to do it.” “AMHQ,” as it’s called, launches Monday at 7am.

  • Eric Kuhn, the former head of social media for CNN and UTA is part of the team for start-up “Layer3 TV.” Lost Remote reports the as-yet launched network has received $21 million in funding and has assembled a management team of tech and cable veterans.

‘Good Morning America’ Heading to The Oscars

GMA OscarsThe 86th annual Academy Awards will air on ABC Sunday night at 8:30pmET, with red carpet festivities beginning at 7pmET.

Sunday morning’s “Good Morning America” will air reports from ABC News entertainment correspondents Chris Connelly and Rachel Smith from the red carpet outside the Dolby Theatre.

On the big night, Robin Roberts and Lara Spencer will co-host “Oscar’s Red Carpet Live” alongside PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly Editorial Director Jess Cagle and TV host Tyson Beckford.

The morning after, “Good Morning America” will air live from Los Angeles, recapping the night’s highlights and big winners. Musician John Legend will be performing live on the show.

ABC’s sister-network Fusion is also getting in on the Oscars action, with Alicia Menendez hosting Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party red carpet.

Not to be outdone, NBC’s “Today” will be covering the big awards ceremony, with Al Roker and Kathie Lee Gifford split hosting from Los Angeles on Monday morning. The duo will highlight the night’s biggest moments and best fashion as well as air their interviews with celebrities from the red carpet.

Joining them will be the Olympic duo of Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinsky, who will also be contributing to NBC’s “Access Hollywood” from the red carpet. Weir and Lipinsky just got back from contributing to NBC’s Sochi Olympics coverage.

Charlie Sheen Went Deep At Dodger Stadium

The folks over at USA Today discovered a video clip of Charlie Sheen hitting a home run at Dodger Stadium while filming a DirecTV commercial in February 2007.

Even four years ago, Sheen was all about winning.
