NBC’s Betsy Fischer Weds Politico’s Jonathan Martin

Congratulations to “Meet the Press” executive producer Betsy Fischer and Politico senior writer Jonathan Martin, who married over the weekend in Virginia. Politico’s Mike Allen officiated the ceremony, and gave the couple a generous shout-out in “Playbook.”

According to “Playbook,” former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw toasted the couple, who were engaged in October, 2011:

“I have been thinking about this union of these two most powerful organizations in American political journalism. It’s … as if a member of the Gotti family married a member of the Gambino family. Jonathan, … the bad news is that I think – I’m counting on this – that David Gregory will now start to impersonate YOU at parties instead of me.

Is it Okay to use the Term ‘Cracker’ when describing Florida voters?

Cracker, a pejorative term generally used to describe Southern rural white people, turned up at least twice yesterday during cable news coverage of the Florida primary.

On Chuck Todd’s MSNBC show Tuesday, Politico’s Jonathan Martin said: “Chuck, a lot of the counties in the panhandle, in North Florida, the cracker counties, if you will, more resemble Georgia and Alabama than they do Florida.”

Later, during Tamron Hall‘s hour, guest Rick Wilson, who is a Florida Republican strategist accurately predicted Mitt Romney would win the state, saying, “Ranging from the cracker counties in the panhandle, down to central Florida, down to Miami and the southwest part of the state, I think he will roll out incredibly big numbers.”

Sean Hannity, during his Florida wrap-up show last night on Fox News, called out MSNBC for the use of the term, even though it was the guests, and not the hosts who used it.

So what do you think? Should that term be avoided when describing voters in the rural South?

MTP EP Betsy Fischer Says ‘Yes’ to Politico’s Jonathan Martin

Betsy Fischer, the executive producer of “Meet the Press,” and Politico’s Jonathan Martin got engaged Friday night at the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, MD. Martin emailed his Politico colleague Mike Allen: “It’s a special place for us, as it was the site of our first weekend getaway together. Champagne inside the inn followed the big question. For the ring aficionados, it’s an emerald cut diamond. We’re both appreciative of the love from family and friends. And I’m a very lucky guy.”

It was back to work for both this morning. Martin was in a 2012 election story on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and was a guest live on C-Span’s “Washington Journal,” (Video after the jump of Martin talking about the engagement). Meanwhile, Fischer Tweeted through a “Meet the Press” interview with Secy of State Clinton, then later, updated her Facebook status to “engaged.” Presumably, the engagement means Martin’s already limited “Meet the Press” appearances will be curtailed.

Martin and Fischer (shown at a book party in June 2010) have been dating since early 2010.

Shep Gets Hall of Fame Nod

FNC anchor Shepard Smith is anchoring live in St. Louis at the site of the VP debate today, but tomorrow he’ll be somewhere totally different.

Smith will be inducted into the University of Mississippi Alumni Hall of Fame tomorrow in Oxford, MS.

Author John Grisham and four others join Smith into the Hall of Fame.

Couric’s Questions Get Veep Treatment — But What Did Palin Say?

Tonight, for the fourth time in five shows, the CBS Evening News will feature a Katie Couric interview with Gov. Sarah Palin. But TVNewser has learned Palin will be featured tomorrow and Thursday as well on the Evening News.

A series called Vice Presidential Questions (similar to the Presidential Questions and Primary Questions before it) begins tomorrow. Couric poses the same questions on an array of topics to both Gov. Palin and Sen. Joe Biden.

But the primary question about Vice Presidential Questions is whether it features a moment in which Palin appears “unable to discuss any major court cases,” other than Roe v. Wade. It’s an exchange hinted at in a Politico story. Jonathan Martin quotes a Palin aide saying “how ‘infuriating’ it was for CBS to purportedly leak word about the gaffe.”

A CBS News spokesperson would not comment on whether the court case question is part of the series. Vice Presidential Questions runs Wednesday and Thursday.
