Changing Times for ‘Dateline’ and ‘Rock Center’

NBC’s two newsmagazines get new timeslots tonight. “Rock Center with Brian Williams” moves to 10pmET/9pmCT while two hours of “Dateline” moves back to 8pmET/7pmCT giving NBC News control of NBC’s Friday primetime schedule. Williams has been promoting his new timeslot on air, while “Dateline” correspondents Keith Morrison and Josh Mankiewicz had a little fun shooting an online promo in the LA bureau. Watch:

Murder Mysteries Still Score in the Ratings. See: Friday’s ‘Dateline’

Friday’s “Dateline” was the #1 show of the night in the target primetime A18-49 demo (1.7/3). Correspondent Josh Mankiewicz reported on a newlywed’s murder which led detectives to unravel a mystery that ended with a potential serial killer.

5.689 million viewers watched the show, vs. 4.681 million who watched newsmagazine competitor “20/20″ in the same timeslot. “Dateline” had its highest 18-49 rating in over a year and its biggest audience in six months — since June 1.

How Would You Like a Network Correspondent In Your Home, Watching TV Together?

For its 21st season premiere, NBC’s “Dateline” is getting very social with one of its viewers.

“Dateline” will send correspondent Josh Mankiewicz to a viewer’s home to watch the season premiere next Friday. Then, Mankiewicz and his host for the evening will tweet live throughout the broadcast.

Mankiewicz’s destination will be based on viewer suggestions received during a week-long Twitter campaign that began today. If you’re inclined, tweet a photo along with the hashtag #MankAndMe, to be eligible. He’s already got one viewer excited:

NBC’s ‘Dateline’ Celebrates 20th Season With Mystery-Themed Party

TVNewser stopped by an event in celebration of the 20th season of NBC’s “Dateline” last night. The party, which had a mystery theme, was held at Manhattan’s Griffou.

Attendees — including Chris Hansen, Hoda Kotb, Dennis Murphy, Keith Morrison, Josh Mankiewicz and “Dateline” executive producer Liz Cole — had their mugshots taken and uploaded to Twitter using the hashtag #howdoyoudateline.

Also in attendance was NBC News President Steve Capus, who was spending his birthday with the “Dateline” crew (they had a chocolate cake in his honor). He told TVNewser that earlier in the day he received a “Put On A Happy Face” singing telegram at his office.

Lester Holt Named anchor of ‘Dateline NBC’

Longtime Weekend “Today” and “Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt is adding “Dateline NBC” to his anchor duties. Holt takes over for Ann Curry who has anchored the show since 2005, and who was named co-anchor of “Today” in May.

“Dateline NBC” was Launched in 1992, and in recent years has covered sensational crime stories which draw viewers and are easily re-purposed on MSNBC and other cable nets.

Holt — whose nickname is Iron Pants around the office, a testament to his work ethic — begins anchoring the 20th season of Dateline this Friday. Chris Hansen, Hoda Kotb, Josh Mankiewicz, Keith Morrison and Dennis Murphy continue as correspondents.

“One of the hardest working men on television, we are so pleased that Lester has added ‘Dateline’ to his portfolio,” said NBC News president Steve Capus.

As Dateline gets a new anchor, NBC News continues to put significant time and money behind “Rock Center with Brian Williams,” a new weekly, live primetime news program anchored by Brian Williams. A premiere date for “Rock Center” has not yet been announced.

Networks Prep Specials for Michael Jackson Death Anniversary; NBC News Licenses Non-NBC Interview

MJ_6-22.jpgThis Friday, ABC, NBC, and CNN will all have special coverage commemorating the one year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s passing.

NBC will air a special “Dateline” titled “Michael Jackson: A Mother’s story at 9pm Friday night. The special, which is reported by Josh Mankiewicz, will feature an interview with Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, that was licensed by NBC and conducted by a woman named Sonia Lowe. Roger Friedman reported today on Showbiz 411 that the interview was produced by former MJ business partner Marc Schaffel and is “the only one with Mrs. Jackson made for the anniversary of Michael’s death.”

The only information we’ve been able to find about Lowe is that she’s the co-creator of “Never Can Say GoodBye: The Katherine Jackson Story” a coffee table book which was co-written by Mrs. Jackson.

TVNewser wondered if NBC is risking any credibility by giving up a portion of a primetime broadcast to a non-NBC journalist — who has a business relationship with the subject — to get a high profile interview? A network spokesperson tells us, “Our special will meet NBC News standards, and we will disclose to viewers the circumstances in which the interview took place.”

It’s not entirely uncommon for the news networks to air licensed interviews done by non-staffers for specials like these, but it is rare.

In addition, ABC and CNN will both also have specials on Friday evening:
