Reporter Slammed in Ferguson Slams Joe Scarborough: ‘Sipping his Starbucks Smugly’

MSNBCNNFerguson

The arrest of two reporters in Ferguson, MO last night has been a hot topic on morning cable news. In the first 10 minutes of “Morning Joe,” Joe Scarborough shared his opinion.

“I’ve been in places where police officers said: ‘all right you know what? This is cordoned off, you guys need to move along.’ You know what I do? I go, ‘yes, sir, or yes, ma’am.’ I don’t sit there and have a debate and film the police officer unless I want to get on TV and have people talk about me the next day,” said Scarborough, adding, “I am sure I am just the worst person in the world for saying this.”

Scarborough’s take on the arrest and short detention of Washington Post reporter Wesley Lowery and The Huffington Post’s Ryan Reilly, became news over on CNN. Kate Bolduan asked Lowery — who says police slammed him into a soda machine during his arrest — about Scarborough’s comments:

I would invite Joe Scarborough to come down to Ferguson and get out of 30 Rock where he’s sitting there sipping his Starbucks smugly. I invite him to come down here and talk to the residents of Ferguson where I’ve been since Monday afternoon having tear gas shot at me, having rubber bullets shot at me, having mothers and daughters crying, having a 19-year-old boy crying that he had to run and pull his 21-year-old sister out from a cloud of tear gas. He thought she was going to die.

I invite Joe Scarborough down here and to do some reporting on the ground, and then he can — and then maybe we can have an educated conversation about what’s happening here.

Savannah Guthrie‘s “Today” show colleagues — Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb, Tamron Hall and Natalie Morales — threw the expecting mom a baby shower last week at The Glass Houses in Chelsea. Although Morales didn’t attend because she was in Brazil covering the World Cup, Guthrie was feted by NBC’s Jenna Bush Hager, Cynthia McFadden, Contessa Brewer, Dylan Dreyer and Erica Hill, as well as CBS’ Gayle King, ABC’s Amy Robach and Deborah Roberts, and CNN’s Kate Bolduan, who is also expecting

“I have never felt in my life so much genuine joy,” Guthrie said in a speech with her husband, Mike Feldman. “Because when you say that you’re happy for us and you give us a hug or you rub the belly, I know you really mean it.” Watch:

Ivan Watson: ‘I’m Being Kicked. I’m Being Kicked’

WatsonTurkeyCNN’s Ivan Watson says it was just another day at the office Saturday when he was roughed up by security forces in Istanbul while reporting  on the one year anniversary of the standoff and crackdown in Istanbul’s Gezi park. Turkish authorities began demanding his identification, then knocking him around and kicking him, all in the middle of a live report.

“I’m pretty used to getting knocked around by security forces,” Watson told Kate Bolduan on “New Day.” “I’ve been detained in Iran and Russia. I’ve been knocked around in Turkey before. The difference here is that it happened on live television.”

Watson says he wasn’t legally detained but rather held for a half hour as security forces conducted an identity check. “They did not accept my Turkish press accreditation,” he says, adding that he’s seen other colleagues in the media leave their jobs because of the pressure put on them by security forces. Jenna Lee Pregnant With First Child

Jenna LeeAt the end of “Happening Now” this afternoon, co-anchor Jenna Lee announced she and husband Leif Babin are expecting their first child around, appropriately enough, Labor Day.

“As my team knows, I like to double and triple source everything before putting it on the air,” Lee joked. “After consulting a wide variety of different medical experts, I can confirm that my husband and I are expecting our first child…it’s very much ‘happening now.’”

Co-anchor Jon Scott asked Lee if part of her husband’s training as a former Navy SEAL dealt with how to “deal with a pregnant woman.”

“I can’t reveal all their top-secret training,” Lee lightheartedly responded, adding that for some reason, a lot of former Navy Seals end up having girls as children. Lee and Babin have decided not to learn the gender ahead of time. “It will just be breaking news when it happens,” Lee joked.

Lee joins “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie and CNN anchor Kate Bolduan who are also pregnant for the first time.

Kate Bolduan Expecting First Child

“New Day” co-anchor Kate Bolduan and her husband private equity investor Michael Gershenson are expecting their first child. “You all, without probably knowing it, have put up with some pretty gnarly morning sickness,” Bolduan said.

“You’ll have to deal with another baby,” John Berman said, pointing at Chris Cuomo. “I know, I’ve already got one,” Bolduan laughed while leaning on Cuomo.

And a fellow morning anchor who is also expecting, sent her congratulations.

2013 TVNewser Challege: The Results

At the beginning of the year, we asked you to predict what would happen in the television news industry in 2013, and thousands of you responded with your thoughts on the year ahead. We’ll have a new set of questions in the 2014 TVNewser Challenge tomorrow, but in the meantime, here’s how you did.

Will the three evening newscasts increase or decrease in viewership in 2013?

82% of you thought the evening newscasts would decrease in viewership, compared to just 18% of you who thought viewership would go up. As it turns out, you were all right: year-to-date, the three-network annual total is up +2% in total viewers and down -4% in the A25-54 demographic compared to 2012. “NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” remained on top this year. “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” was second and “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley” was third.

By this time next year, which CNN daypart will see the biggest change under Jeff Zucker?

The majority of you (57%) believed CNN’s primetime programming would see the biggest changes under Jeff Zucker‘s leadership. There have been a few changes in primetime, but the major programming overhaul was in the mornings, which 30% of voters predicted. “New Day” debuted in June.

Which broadcast morning show is likely to see an anchor change in 2013?

Only 12% of responders saw an anchor change in the cards for “Good Morning America,” which had weather anchor Sam Champion depart for The Weather Channel this month. 61% of you thought the anchor change would be at “Today” and 27% thought it would be at “CBS This Morning.”

Will Megyn Kelly still be with Fox News at this time next year?

44% of you correctly predicted Megyn Kelly‘s move to primetime, which took place after she returned from maternity leave in October. Read more

Dueling Cuomos On The Morning Shows

Yes, the Duchess of Cambridge may have been the big boldface name on the morning shows this morning, but there was another high-profile family all over TV: New York’s royal family, the Cuomos.

Chris Cuomo sat at his usual perch in the Time Warner Center, alongside Kate Bolduan and Michaela Pereira, where he led “New Day” on CNN talking about the Royal Baby, among other topics.

Meanwhile, on the network morning program that clearly influenced “New Day” quite a bit–”CBS This Morning”–Chris’ older brother Andrew Cuomo, who also happens to be Governor of the State of New York, talked to Jan Crawford.

Crawford interviewed Cuomo about 2016 ambitions and New York City politics… but also went head to head with the Governor in a whitewater raft race in the Adirondacks.
