E.D. Hill Fills In For Brooke Baldwin on CNN

Former Fox News Channel anchor and — as of earlier this afternoon — soon-to-be-former “In the Arena” contributor E.D. Hill is filling in for 3 p.m. anchor Brooke Baldwin on CNN today.

Hill, who left Fox News Channel in November 2008, has been seen regularly on CNN since February, when Eliot Spitzer‘s 8 p.m. timeslot was rebranded as an ensemble show following Kathleen Parker‘s departure. She has also guest-hosted “The View” several times.

Erin Burnett to 7pm on CNN; John King USA up to 6pm; Anderson Cooper moves to 8pm

Big changes coming to the CNN lineup.

Erin Burnett‘s new show will be a part of CNN’s pre-primetime lineup, airing at 7pmET, CNN announced. “John King, USA” which had aired at 7pm, moves up to 6pm and “Anderson Cooper 360″ moves up two hours, to 8pmET, pitting him against cable news’ #1 show FNC’s “The O’Reilly Factor.”

The first change occurs August 8, when AC360 makes the move to 8pm, with a re-air at 10pmET. Most days, this will mean a shorter day for Cooper, who will be devoting more time to his syndicated daytime show which launches in September.

“I’m looking forward to the new time slot and am excited to share AC360 with a new audience at 8pm, while still connecting with my regular viewers at 10pm,” said Cooper.

Burnett, the former CNBC anchor, will debut in the fall with her show re-airing at 11pmET. “Piers Morgan Tonight” continues at 9pm and 12amET.

King’s move to 6pm means the 2-hour “Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” will now begin at 4pmET, leaving one less hour of CNN Newsroom.

All these changes leave “In the Arena” off the schedule. There’s no mention of that, or the fate of host Eliot Spitzer in the news release (after the jump.)

But Spitzer gives this response on the show, via his publicist: “We engaged serious people in conversations about national and global issues in a way that was informative and challenging. I believe that we provided diverse and valuable perspectives during the show’s tenure. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at CNN.”

Spitzer’s brief run as a cable news host began last October when the former New York Governor was paired with The Washington Post‘s Kathleen Parker for a new show called “Parker Spitzer.” That lasted four months, when Parker left amid reports of tension on the set. The show was reformatted into an ensemble led by Spitzer.

Insiders tell us Spitzer’s work at CNN is done, and he’ll be free to speak with other networks soon.

Monday night, Michael’s Resaturant was the scene of a party for Mika Brzezinski and her new book “Knowing Your Value.”

Miles Nadal, the CEO of MDC Partners and The Daily Beast/Newsweek‘s Tina Brown hosted the night. Guests included Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Arianna Huffington, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, NBC News “Today” co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, former CNN host Kathleen Parker, MSNBC president Phil Griffin, CBS News’s Lesley Stahl, IAC chairman Barry Diller, former Rep. Harold Ford Jr., MSNBC/The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capeheart, and Daily News‘s Mort Zuckerman.

Mika’s “Morning Joe” partner Joe Scarborough was not in attendance following the death of his father last week. EP Chris Licht, who is expected to announce in the coming days he’s leaving the network for an executive position at CBS News, was on hand.

FishbowlNY contributor Diane Clehane was at her usual perch Wednesday, at Michael’s restaurant where media bigs do lunch. Diane sat down with former New York Governer-turned CNN host Eliot Spitzer.

When I asked Spitzer if he considered himself a journalist or a commentator, he answered simply, “I don’t know. I don’t mean to be vague. When the issue of objectivity comes up, I don’t think there is any such thing as objectivity. I don’t mean to say you infuse everything with bias and don’t try to be rigorously factual, but how you present every fact depends upon the prism through which you see it.”

Twenty-seven years after suffering a heart attack he didn’t know was a heart attack, CNN exile Aaron Brown will undergo triple-bypass surgery today in Phoenix.

“Some part of me has known for a long time that at some point, the piper that is heart disease is going to get paid,” says Brown, 62, the Walter Cronkite Professor of Journalism at Arizona State. “This has been 27 years in the making.”

One night in 1984, when he was an anchor at Seattle’s KING, Brown didn’t realize that the pain he was experiencing was a heart attack. He did the late news, anyway, then was rushed to the hospital.

A week ago, after a routine stress test led to an immediate angiogram, Brown’s cardiologist told him he needed a bypass – stat.

While accepting his fate, Brown says he’s angry, too. He is a planner, and heart surgery was not in his plans. The situation is beyond his control. For Brown, that is a frightening place.

“If you’re a control freak, it’s hard to let go,” says Brown, forced out of CNN in 2005. “On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d be a 12. I’ve never faced anything quite like this. I find myself fighting to get control of it, but I know it’s not healthy for me. I’m trying so hard to let go.

“It sounds crazy, but I don’t recall ever having let go. In my childhood, I had to stay focused and in control, because so many people doubted me. I grew up in a little town [Hopkins,

Eliot Spitzer moves into Kathleen Parker’s office

TVNewser has learned Eliot Spitzer host of the new 8pmET show “In the Arena” has moved into the office of his former CNN co-host, Kathleen Parker. Parker announced on Friday she’d be moving on from the show and the network. So today, Spitzer moved in.

A CNN insider tells TVNewser, “It’s not unusual that when there are staff changes that there are office changes as well.”

Kathleen Parker Out at ‘Parker Spitzer’

Breaking: “Parker Spitzer” co-host Kathleen Parker is leaving CNN’s 8 PM program.

Parker’s co-host, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, will remain. Earlier we noted that Spitzer had been telling friends Parker would be leaving the network in short order.

The show is being reformatted as an ensemble program called “In the Arena,” and will feature a rotating lineup of contributors that will be paired with Spitzer, according to a tweet from the NY Times Brian Stelter.

Update: Its official: “Kathleen Parker has decided to leave the program to focus on her writing, and we have decided to take the show in a new direction,” said CNN/U.S. executive VP Ken Jautz in a memo to staff. “We will be adopting an ensemble format with several newsmakers, guests and contributors joining Eliot Spitzer each night. The new program will be called, “In the Arena,” beginning Monday. E.D. Hill and Will Cain will join the program as well others within and outside the CNN family.”

Cain is a columnist for National Review, while Hill is a former Fox News anchor, who is infamous for her “terrorist fist jab” comment on the network back in 2008.

“In the Arena” appears to be a reference to the famous quote by former President Theodore Roosevelt.

Networks and Cable Channels Roll Out Key Talent For 2011 State Of The Union Coverage

All four major broadcast networks, along with the cable news channels, are bringing out the big name talent for coverage of the 2011 State of The Union address Tuesday evening.

On the broadcast networks, NBC has Brian Williams anchoring along with “Meet the Press” host David Gregory.

ABC has Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos anchoring, joined by a number of correspondents, hosts, and analysts, including Jake Tapper, Christiane Amanpour, Jonathan Karl and Deborah Roberts.

On CBS, “CBS Evening News” anchor Katie Couric will lead the coverage, joined by CBS reporters and analysts.

On the Fox broadcasting network, Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith will anchor coverage. Smith will be joined by “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace and correspondent Wendell Goler.

CNN Eyeing Shakeup at ‘Parker Spitzer?’

The Wall Street Journal’s Sam Schechner reports (Subscription required) that CNN is considering replacing Kathleen Parker on its 8 PM program “Parker Spitzer.”

Parker, of course, co-hosts the show with former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer.

“Parker Spitzer” has failed to catch on with viewers since it debuted in October, delivering ratings that were down compared to what the 8 PM hour typically delivered the year before. Turner Broadcasting chief Phil Kent, who oversees CNN, acknowledged that the show had been disappointing at an investor conference last week, saying:

Kathleen Parker on ‘Parker-Spitzer’ Tensions: ‘I don’t storm. I saunter.’

NYT’s Brian Stelter talks with CNN’s Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker about the reported tension on the set between the former Democratic governor and the conservative columnist.

The tensions spilled into public view last week when the Page Six gossip column in The New York Post said Ms. Parker had stormed off the set in early November. Asked about that claim, Ms. Parker said, “I don’t storm. I saunter.”

She acknowledged that there was some “editorial and political tension,” but cast it as a normal part of television production. “That’s how human beings are made,” she added.

Mr. Spitzer put it this way: “I’ve seen tension in my life — conflict, tension, acrimony — and I haven’t seen anything here that comes close to what I’ve seen.”

Kathleen Parker Mad at Producers?

Co-host of the new CNN show “Parker Spitzer” Kathleen Parker is sick of being ignored due to the popularity and infamy of her co-host Eliot Spitzer, according to The New York Post.

Parker was said to have stormed off the set during a pre-taping a few weeks ago over favoritism by show EP Liza McGuirk. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Parker did return to finish the show.

“CNN is standing by the show,” network spokeswoman Barbara Levin told The New York Post. “Liza’s a terrific producer, and any suggestion that she’s on her way out is patently false.”

“We love Kathleen too,” Levin said.

Election 2010: Technology Front and Center for CNN’s Midterm Election Coverage

CNN has announced its coverage plans for the 2010 midterm elections. As in previous elections, new technology will be a major part of the coverage, with returning favorites like the “magic wall” and “data wall’ being joined by the “CNN Election Matrix,” which will break down data in a visual way.

The network already revealed it will be adding more “virtual objects” to its coverage.

“We are taking capabilities of the Data Wall and quadrupling it in order to report the story in the clearest way we can,” said CNN senior VP and Washington bureau chief David Bohrman in a statement. “Viewers are ready for a rich meal of election items and with CNN’s technology on air and online, paired with the Best Political Team, we will serve an unparalleled election night experience.”

Wolf Blitzer will lead the network’s coverage, and will be joined by Anderson Cooper, Candy Crowley, John King and Soledad O’Brien. Other anchors, reporters and hosts that will be contributing to the program include Jessica Yellin, Dana Bash, Brianna Keilar, Ed Henry, Dan Lothian, Suzanne Malveaux and new 8 PM hosts Eliot Spitzer and Kathleen Parker.

Nathalie Dupree, not to be confused with that other Dupre (with one “e”), is a chef who is taking on Sen. Jim DeMint. The name similarity was not lost on one TVNewser tipster last night:

‘Parker Spitzer’ Ratings Up on Night 2

Night two saw an improvement for CNN’s “Parker Spitzer.” The show averaged 513,000 Total Viewers and 125,000 A25-54 viewers, both up from yesterday. It also grew from its “John King, USA” lead-in by a substantial margin, up 23% in the demo and 24% in total viewers. Despite the bump, the program still finished fourth in its timeslot. Full cable ratings will be coming later this afternoon.
