In the “Outstanding Morning Program” category, NBC’s “Today,” ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “CBS Sunday Morning” are the nominees. We hear that CBS did not submit “CBS This Morning” for consideration this time around. “GMA” and “CBS Sunday” also received nominations in “Outstanding Promotional Announcement” and “Outstanding Achievement in Multiple Camera Editing” respectively.

• That 78-year-old marathoner seen over and over today in news coverage crumbling to the ground when the first bomb went off, finished the race. Bill Iffrig, who spoke with CNN’s Piers Morgan, got up and walked the final 12 feet, coming in second in his division.

• Matt Lauer was a part of tonight’s NBC special at 10pmET live from Boston talking with eyewitnesses and a runner. He’ll be live for the “Today” show tomorrow. Ann Curry participated too, interviewing a young runner who crossed the finish line about :25 seconds before the first blast.
• Katie Couric and her crew will turn around a show devoted to the attacks in Boston tomorrow. Couric will host from her studio in New York.

Silva’s ground level video of the first blast has been some of the most widely viewed.

At CNN, he will take on a senior editorial role, which, we’re told, will include overseeing CNN’s vast network of on-air contributors as well as other other day-to-day duties.

Bass was a longtime Zucker lieutenant at “Today.” He left NBC in 2001 to take over as EP of CBS’s “The Early Show.” He returned to NBC in 2007 in a business development role and joined Katie Couric‘s syndicated show last summer.

Also for May sweeps, CBS’ daytime talker “The Talk” will return to New York City for the second time this season. The article tells the behind-the-scenes drama of what went down on NBC’s “Today,” including the departure of Ann Curry. There are also some new revelations, including just how close Matt Lauer came to joining ABC News. According to Hagan’s sources, all the parties involved believed that the deal was done, and that Lauer could be joining Katie Couric on her new ABC talk show:

And at the moment they informed him of Curry’s exit, Lauer himself appeared halfway out the door. Three months earlier, Lauer had been angered by a press leak that [Steve] Capus and [Jim] Bell were talking to Ryan Seacrest about possibly replacing him. (Lauer learned of the leak while being forced to stand outside the security gate at the White House Christmas party because Ann Curry had forgotten her driver’s license.) In trying to placate Lauer, Burke had given him a window to explore other jobs, but they made it clear that Seacrest was really just an insurance policy; they didn’t want Lauer to leave. But Lauer, possibly as a negotiating tactic, was taking leaving pretty seriously. He’d begun working closely with Zucker to develop an idea for ABC: the Katie Couric daytime talk show with Matt Lauer—together again. Lauer met with Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, ABC’s parent company, who made a strong effort to recruit Lauer.

That said, Lauer acknowledged that their chemistry wasn’t great, and that he was reluctant about Curry before she officially became co-anchor. Curry had a guarantee in her contract that gave her the slot.

The annual award honors a professional in the field “for his or her philanthropic leadership and service to the New York Jewish community.”
