Life After A Layoff: TVNewsers Navigate A Career Detour

Alissa Krinsky
TVNewser Contributor

“There’s life after whatever job you’re in now,” says former HLN anchor Linda Stouffer.

Stouffer was laid off in December after 12 years at the network.

She was not alone. Dozens of tvnewsers, on air and off, were let go at the end of 2008, as the industry reacted to a turbulent economy. Kevin Corke, John Larson and Mark Mullen of NBC lost their jobs. So did CNN’s Kathleen Koch and Rusty Dornin, HLN’s Carrie Lee, and numerous other journalists at those networks and at CBS News, too. ABC News laid off 35 staffers earlier this year.

Stouffer may have been in good company, but she was still looking to get back to work.

And she did. Three months after leaving HLN, she was picked up by Atlanta’s ABC station, WSB-TV. Stouffer is reporting part-time, hoping “to have some anchor opportunities down the line.”

Good news after an initial jolt. “Job loss is an earthquake of an experience,” says Stouffer, who first took time to “take stock, to see what I wanted to do next.”

It was her “big think.”

After also being laid off in December, former CNN Justice Department/Supreme Court correspondent Kelli Arena has had the chance to reflect, too.

“I’m doing great,” she says. “I had been working non-stop until now.

“The opportunity to just slow down, and take a breath, and not be ruled by my Blackberry is a tremendously different life than the one I had before,” she says.

Richard Engel to the White House?

TVNewser hears NBC’s chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel may be headed to the White House for the network.

Engel has been with NBC since just after the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. He’s reported extensively on the war and has also served as Beirut bureau chief and, since April, as chief foreign correspondent. Sources tell us Engel, who has been reporting from NBC’s New York headquarters recently (last night’s Nightly News story after the jump), could also remain chief foreign correspondent but be based stateside, similar to Lara Logan‘s assignment with CBS News.

Savannah Guthrie and John Yang are currently reporting on the White House for NBC. Yang, on the remaining days of the Bush administration and Guthrie on the Obama transition. As TVNewser first reported last week, Lee Cowan, who covered the Obama campaign, is expected to move to NBC’s Los Angeles bureau.

Two other NBC White House correspondents Kevin Corke and Jeannie Ohm were part of the cuts NBC News made earlier this month.

ABC, CBS and CNN have all named their Washington, DC teams.

continued…

Layoffs Spread to NBC’s Washington Bureau

Breaking: After layoffs at the Dallas and Burbank bureaus, NBC News employees in Washington, DC are beginning to feel the effects of cuts that will trim the global NBCU workforce by 3% or about 500 jobs.

TVNewser confirms veteran correspondent Bob Faw will be leaving as will relative newcomer Kevin Corke (pictured). Faw joined NBC in 1994. Before NBC, he was with CBS News for 17 years.

Corke joined NBC from ESPN in 2004 and has covered the White House for NBC News and MSNBC. He also occasionally anchored on MSNBC.

Corke used his Facebook status to deliver the news to friends with an update at 10:29am. He wrote, “Kevin just got laid off! So why is he still smiling?” So, far 27 friends have commented on the status ranging from, “I hope your kidding!” to “I am mortified!!! I will follow you anywhere my man!!! You’re a HUGE LOSS!!!”

TVNewser has learned four employees who worked for Dateline out of the DC bureau have also been cut.

> Update: Jeannie Ohm, who was also a White House and, previously, Pentagon correspondent, has been let go.

ABC, CBS Broadcast President Live, NBC Does Not

Just after 8amET, as President Bush took to the Rose Garden to outline how some of the $700 billion bailout bill will be spent, ABC’s Good Morning America and CBS’ The Early Show interrupted their morning broadcasts to carry the speech. NBC’s Today show did not. As the president began to speak, NBC’s White House correspondent Kevin Corke did a live report for Today about what the president was going to say. As the president finished the short speech, Today was promoting a segment with actress Maureen McCormick, aka Marcia Brady.

Cable news networks CNBC, MSNBC, FNC, FBN and CNN all carried the remarks live.
