George W. Bush on Jenna’s Job: ‘Continuing the Warm Relations the Bush Family Has With the National Press’

All five living presidents are at the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, on the campus of Southern Methodist University, in Dallas this morning. The cable news networks are carrying the event in its entirety, with speeches given by former Pres. Clinton and Pres. Obama. When it came time for Pres. Bush to speak, he made mention of being a first time grandfather, and of his daughter’s job in TV news:

So if you don’t have anything to do in the morning, tune into the “Today” show. Jenna’s a correspondent, thereby continuing the warm relations the Bush family has with the national press.

The national media has descended on Dallas for the event. Pres. Bush has conducted interviews with ABC’s Diane Sawyer, NBC’s Matt Lauer, CBS’s Charlie Rose, FNC’s Bret Baier and Dana Perino and CNN’s John King. Former First Lady Laura Bush has also been giving tours of the Library to several news outlets.

Matt Lauer got the biggest piece of news during a live interview with former First Ladies Laura and Barbara Bush as well as twins Jenna and Barbara Bush. When asked about Jeb Bush getting into the 2016 race, Barbara Bush said, “He’s the most qualified, but I don’t think he’ll run,” adding, “There are other people out there that are very qualified and we’ve had enough Bushes.” When Lauer followed up, “Have you expressed that to him?” Laura Bush, with a look of surprise, jumped in, “Just on the ‘Today’ show.”

Matt Lauer will interview the Bushes Thursday live on “Today.”

Her parents, former President George W. Bush (whose nickname with his kids we learned is apparently “popsicle”) and former First lady Laura Bush called into the program after the announcement was made.

“I am fired up! Looking forward to it,” the former President said.

Swine Flu Cancels Today Show’s “Vacation”

Next week Matt, Meredith, Al and Ann were planning to hit the road for “Today Takes a Vacation.” But the coverage of the swine flu will keep them in New York.

The show was to originate from San Antonio on Monday, Key West on Tuesday and a “surprise” location on Wednesday. This trip was planned after “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” was shelved due to the concerns that a global hopscotch wasn’t suitable in this economy.

NBC had said the trip was meant to “explore the down-home beauty of the United States and partake in accessible vacation activities in each location.”

The Texas trip was to include an interview with former First Lady Laura Bush while Jimmy Buffet was to perform live during the Key West stop.
