Kid Rock, Maroon 5 and Lady Antebellum to Play Concert Before Pack-Saints Kickoff Game

Nothing gets me ready for football like listening to Lady Antebellum and Maroon 5. Their music makes me want to run through a freaking wall. Obviously NFL officials share this sentiment, because these two groups — along with Kid Rock, who’s a little soft for my tastes — will be playing the pregame concert before next Thursday’s NFL Kickoff game between the Saints and Packers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.

These acts will play on a stage adjacent to Lambeau Field, with the concert starting at 7:30 p.m. ET. The game itself kicks off at 8:30 p.m. The concert will air on NBC and on the NFL Network.

The concert before last year’s game in New Orleans featured The Dave Matthews Band, Taylor Swift and Harry Connick Jr., who are likewise staples in NFL locker rooms.

The SportsNewser Interview: Gary Stevenson

Just days after he was formally announced as president of Pac-12 Enterprises, SportsNewser had a chance to chat exclusively with Gary Stevenson.

The sports marketing and media executive comes to the Pac-12 from OnSports, a consulting firm Stevenson founded in 1997. In fact, the then-Pac-10 was one of Stevenson’s clients along with the likes of the PGA Tour and NASCAR.

Stevenson discussed the importance of striking a deal with the satellite companies for the national and regional networks along with what content Pac-12 fans can expect across their digital properties.

SportsNewser: The then-Pac-10 was one of your OnSport clients. How much did your prior relationship with the conference come into play when Larry Scott called you about the position?

Gary Stevenson: From my prior relationship with the conference, I got a real understanding of what the conference brand and the schools brand stood for. That was intriguing to me. Anytime you’re going to launch a network, it’s important what the brand is that’s affiliated with the network. We have such a huge start because the brand is on such an excellent level. continued…

Philly columnist: Media should shut up about booing fans

Are you someone who boos a lot at sporting events? Do you boo when your favorite team has the audacity to fall behind in the first inning? Or when a future Hall of Famer goes into a prolonged slump? If so, that’s all well and good according to Philadelphia Inquirer columnist John Gonzalez, who takes exception to columnists and TV announcers who chastise fans for booing at questionable times.

“Many media types I know hold the fans in contempt. It’s sad when, say, a cheese-heavy local baseball blogger thinks he knows it all but fails to see himself for what he is: a glorified stenographer with a bloated ego and a sweet gig. It’s the misguided elitism that rankles. Reporters don’t consume sports the same way fans do, and few of them have made much of an effort to understand your perspective….Boo whomever you like. Or don’t. It’s up to you. Just don’t let anyone dictate the terms of your passion. They aren’t you, and they shouldn’t pretend that they always know what’s right.”

Passively accepting the commentary of, say, Bob Costas is for lemmings from the Midwest, Gonzalez says.

“Context is important. Let’s not forget where all this supposedly unsavory conduct occurs. We don’t live in St. Paul, Minn., or St. Louis. The fans there are Stepford automatons, blinking and cheering and slobbering on cue. It’s frightening. Many of the people (in Philadelphia) take pride in being the opposite of the typical mindless water-and-sprout mutants filling seats in stadiums across the country. Philadelphians have long seen themselves as open, honest brokers – fans who will tell you exactly what they’re thinking instead of what you might want to hear.”

So in conclusion: Philadelphia fans can tell you what they’re thinking (even when you don’t want to hear it), but Philadelphia announcers cannot.

Bad Matchups Bad for Ratings, But Not for Attendence

The SEC Championship game featured No. 1 Auburn against No. 19 South Carolina. As expected, Cam Newton and the Tigers rolled their opponents, and the broadcast struggled to match last season’s impressive numbers.

“Auburn’s win over South Carolina drew a 6.3 overnight rating on CBS Saturday, down 47 percent from last year (ALA/UF: 11.8), and down 39 percent from 2008 (UF/ALA: 10.4).” Sports Business Journal
reports.

The ACC title game, on the other hand, found plenty of in-person fan support despite the fact that neither Virginia Tech nor Florida State are particularly good.

The game, held in Charlotte after five years in Florida, sold out, with 28,000 tickets going before the teams were known.

ACC chairman John Swofford called it a “big hit,” although he certainly would love to have the SEC Championship’s TV ratings.
