NBC News special correspondent Chelsea Clinton was among the tvnewsers leading panels at today’s Women in the World conference. But it was her mother who got a thunderous applause and shouts of “2016!” when she took the stage at the fourth annual event. Hillary Clinton called women’s rights “a core imperative for every society.”

Clinton’s speech kicked off the day’s events, which featured an impressive roster of women from the television news industry: ABC’s Cynthia McFadden, Deborah Roberts and JuJu Chang and CBS’s Norah O’Donnell all moderated panel discussions on topics ranging from women in the tech industry to fostering female leaders.

Before moderating a spirited panel discussion about the epidemic of sexual abuse in India, McFadden (pictured above) talked with an Indian woman who was the victim of a rape. She sat with her back to the audience in order to conceal her identity. The woman, whose case is still pending in the Indian high court, described how she was raped by a male friend of hers four

Speakers include Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep and Angelina Jolie.

“60 Minutes” made the Nielsen Top 10 for the third time in four weeks, finishing at #9. The broadcast, with a lead-in and delayed in half the country by the NCAA Tournament, drew 10.5 million viewers. Sunday’s show featured Lesley Stahl’s report on Russian punk band Pussy Riot, James Brown’s story about a man’s quest to play in the NFL after being exonerated of rape charges and Anderson Cooper diving with Nile crocodiles in Botswana.

’60 Minutes’ (at just 35 Minutes) Has Biggest Audience in 4 Years

“60 Minutes” — which wasn’t quite 60 minutes — made Nielsen’s Top 10 list for the third consecutive week, landing at #2 with 19.63 million total viewers, its largest audience in four years. The show got a boost from the overtime Dallas Cowboys – Pittsburgh Steelers game and was shortened to about 35 minutes in half the country due to live coverage of Pres. Obama’s address at a memorial service in Newtown, CT which began at 8:35pmET

The show featured Scott Pelley’s report on the massacre in Newtown and Lesley Stahl’s story on the largest marine salvage operation ever undertaken to float the wreck of the Costa Concordia.

The CBS News magazine also finished at #2 for the week in households and in Adults 25-54 (6.7/15).

For Second Week Straight, ’60 Minutes’ Makes Top 10

“60 Minutes” has placed in the Top 10 for the second consecutive week. The CBS program drew 11.87 million viewers to land at #8. It was also #6 for the week in households with a 7.7/12.

Sunday’s program included a report by Byron Pitts about false confessions, Lesley Stahl‘s dispatch from Madagascar about endangered tortoises and Scott Pelley‘s profile of Hugh Jackman. This is the fourth time in six weeks that “60 Minutes” finished in the Top 10.

’60 Minutes’ #6 Show for the Week with 14M Viewers

For the second time in three weeks, CBS’ “60 Minutes” has a place in the top 10 shows of the week. With a lead-in audience from the San Diego Chargers – Denver Broncos NFL game, Sunday’s broadcast finished at #6 in both Total Viewers (14.04 million) and households (9.0/13).

Sunday’s edition of “60 Minutes” featured Lara Logan‘s story on the takedown of a cocaine cartel, Lesley Stahl reporting on infant mortality rates and Armen Keteyian‘s examination of football as a college recruitment tool.

Bill O’Reilly Loves ‘Lincoln’: ‘You Know You’re Gonna Win Best Picture’

Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly gives an enthusiastic two thumbs up for “Lincoln,” the new Steven Spielberg film which documents the final few months of the Civil War as Abraham Lincoln tries to get the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery through the House of Representatives.

TVNewser attended the screening and a Q&A with Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays Lincoln, and screenwriter Tony Kushner moderated by TIME’s Rick Stengel. Stengel called first on O’Reilly who asked Day-Lewis how long it took to prepare for the role. “It took a year,” Day-Lewis says. “It seemed preposterous at first … growing up in Southeast London” to play the 16th president of the United States.

O’Reilly then gave his seal of approval: “You know you’re going to win Best Picture.” Then, to Day-Lewis, “and you’re going to win Best Actor.” And to Spielberg: “And you’re going to win Best Director and [Tommy Lee] Jones is going to win Best Supporting Actor.” Jones plays “Radical Republican” Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens.

Before the screening we had a chance to talk with O’Reilly, author of “Killing Lincoln” on its 55th week on the New York Times Best-Sellers list, this week at No. 5. His “Killing Kennedy” is No. 1 on the list for the second straight week.

We asked the Fox News star if he was excited by the news that FNC chairman and CEO Roger Ailes had signed on for another four years. “Excited? We’d be shocked if he hadn’t,” said O’Reilly.

Other notable tvnewsers at the event, “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl, who had a revealing feature on Spielberg last Sunday, “CBS This Morning’s” Gayle King, Charlie Rose, and EP Chris Licht. MSNBC’s Chris Jansing and Lawrence O’Donnell, who ducked out during the Q&A to make it back to 30 Rock for his 10pm show. CNN execs Mark Whitaker, Ken Jautz and Bart Feder and ABC’s “This Week” EP Sandy Cannold.

’60 Minutes’ #2 for the Week

The overtime New York Jets – New England Patriots game Sunday afternoon which drew 23 million viewers in its final hour helped propel “60 Minutes” to the #2 show of the week.

The broadcast drew 15.86 million viewers, the CBS News magazine’s highest weekly ranking since December 18, 2011.

Sunday’s broadcast featured Steve Kroft’s report on the medical marijuana boom in Colorado, Anderson Cooper’s interview with the former Goldman Sachs executive Greg Smith and an interview with Steven Spielberg by Lesley Stahl.

For Second Year in a Row, Broncos-Patriots Give Boost to ’60 Minutes’

Drawing nearly 16 million viewers, CBS’s “60 Minutes” was the #3 show of the week — its highest weekly ranking since December 18, 2011, when the show was #2 for the week and had a New England Patriots / Denver Broncos lead-in. It just so happens those same two teams faced off this past Sunday, helping the show to 15.96 million viewers.

Sunday’s “60 Minutes” included a Steve Kroft investigation of Chinese telecom giant Huawei, Lesley Stahl’s story about Luxottica, the world’s dominant eyewear company, and a Bob Simon report on the amazing rise from obscurity of Detroit singer-songwriter Rodriguez (above).

Arnold Schwarzenegger tells all — or most of all — in his memoir “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life,” out Monday. But first he’s sitting down with Lesley Stahl on Sunday’s “60 Minutes.” (Schwarzenegger’s book is published by CBS Corp. company Simon & Shuster). The actor and former California governor gives the understatement of the year when he tells Stahl cheating on Maria Shriver and having an out-of-wedlock child with his housekeeper was “the stupidest thing I’ve done in the whole relationship.” Stahl proclaims: “She gave up her television career for you. I mean, wow!” Shriver’s career in TV news included co-anchoring CBS’s morning show in the mid-1980s before moving to NBC and anchoring weekend “Today” and “Nightly News” and reporting for “Dateline.”

ABC’s Martha Raddatz to Receive First Amendment Award from Quinnipiac University

Martha Raddatz of ABC News will receive Qunnipiac Unversity’s 19th annual Fred Friendly First Amendment Award next month.

Raddatz has been ABC’s senior foreign affairs correspondent since 2008. In a statement, Lee Kamlet, dean of Quinnipiac University’s school of communications, said Raddatz’s reporting is “accurate and fair, the two elements that are indispensable to a journalist’s credibility.”

Past recipients of the award include Dan Rather, Lesley Stahl, Ted Koppel, Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings and Christiane Amanpour. Raddatz will be presented with hers on June 7.

’60 Minutes’ Finishes in Top 10

CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes” cracked the top 10 during, not bad considering this is the time of year broadcast networks throw everything at the wall with season and series finales. “60″ drew 11.73 million Total Viewers making it the 10th most-watched show of the week. “60″ was also Sunday’s #1 show, but was the 11th most-watched in the A18-49 demo for the night. The show featured Lesley Stahl’s interview of two pilots turned military whistleblowers, Byron Pitts’ story of two young journalists who risked their lives to expose corruption and Anderson Cooper’s interview with Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps.

Ann Curry Talks ‘Today’ Ratings at Matrix Awards

Ann Curry was one of the eight women honored at the New York Women in Communications 2012 Matrix Awards luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria today.

In her acceptance speech, Curry praised her female colleagues in television — “Barbara, Jane, Connie, Lesley, Diane” — as well as her “great bosses, especially the exceptional men I get to work for today.”

“I’m not sucking up, even though recent ratings events might dictate that I should,” Curry joked.

NBC News president Steve Capus and “Today” show EP Jim Bell were at the NBC table, alongside Al Roker and Hoda Kotb. Curry’s award was presented to her by her “Today” show predecessor Meredith Vieira.

Online Test Tied to ’60 Minutes’ Story Drives Record Views

CBS’s “60 Minutes” passed this test with flying colors.

After a fascinating two-part Lesley Stahl story on the rare condition of face blindness Sunday night, 60MinutesOvertime featured an online test to help viewers determine whether they are face blind or “super recognizers,” people who are the opposite of face blind who never forget a face.

That test helped the site draw record views Monday. The single-day high was part of a +820% two-day jump in streams for March 18-19 versus the same period last year and a +363% increase over the webcast’s average Sunday-Monday streams season to date.

As for the TV broadcast, the newsmagazine was the 8th most-watched show of the week, drawing 10.8 million Total Viewers.

Longtime CBS News correspondent Richard Threlkeld Killed in Car Crash

Richard Threlkeld, who spent 25 years as an anchor and correspondent at CBS News, was killed this morning in a head-on car crash on Montauk highway in Amagansett, New York.

Threlkeld worked for local TV stations WHAS in Louisville and WMT-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa before joining CBS News in 1966 where he would remain until 1981. Threlkeld served as co-anchor of the CBS Morning News with Lesley Stahl from 1977 to 1979. In 1982 Threlkeld joined ABC News, reporting for “World News Tonight.” He returned to CBS in 1989 where he stayed another 10 years.

During his news career, Threlkeld covered the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Tiananmen Square protests. His last assignment for CBS News was as Moscow correspondent. His wife, Betsy Aaron was CNN’s Moscow correspondent at the time. Richard Threlkeld was 74.
