CNN senior international correspondent Arwa Damon, in Libya covering the spreading anti-American protests in the Middle East, reported on her visit to the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi this afternoon. “The buildings have been completely gutted, many of them burned, the walls scorched black, debris all over the floor,” she described. Network plans for Obama remarks on Libya

Here’s what the cable networks are planning for coverage of Pres. Obama’s address on Libya tonight at 7:30pmET from the National Defense University.

Bloomberg’s executive editor Al Hunt and Julianna Goldman anchor coverage from Bloomberg TV’s Washington bureau.

CNN will lead into the president’s remarks with John King and lead out with Wolf Blitzer and Anderson Cooper anchoring special coverage along with King, Eliot Spitzer, and Fareed Zakaria, as well as CNN International correspondents Nic Robertson and Arwa Damon up until the 9pm hour when “Piers Morgan Tonight” begins.

CNBC’s Larry Kudlow anchors coverage during “The Kudlow Report.”

Fox Business Network’s Neil Cavuto anchors “FOX Business Special Report: Target Libya. A Presidential Address” beginning at 7:30pm.

Fox News Channel’s Shepard Smith anchors during “FOX Report.” Coverage continues at 8pmET as Bill O’Reilly talks with Brit Hume.

MSNBC’s Chuck Todd is in for Chris Matthews and will anchor coverage during “Hardball.” Primetime is as normal with the network adding a live special at 11pmET on the situation in Middle East and North Africa which will include NBC’s Richard Engel reporting from Libya.

Jennifer Griffin: ‘I feel like CNN has put a landmine out there so I can stop reporting.’

TVNewser talked with Fox News Pentagon correspondent Jennifer Griffin this afternoon about the battle that has broken out between CNN and Fox News over Griffin’s reporting of a Libyan government-sponsored trip to the ruins of Muammar Gaddafi‘s compound Sunday night. Griffin reported the 40 or so journalists, including a Fox News security guard, who went on the trip were being used as human shields, preventing a second British airstrike. CNN correspondent Nic Robertson called that “outrageous.”

“I expect lies from the government, I don’t expect it from other journalists,” said Robertson last night. Robertson also singled out FOX’s correspondent in Tripoli, Steve Harrigan.

“I just think this has gotten ugly,” Griffin tells us. “I think it’s beneath Nic to be saying these things about Steve Harrigan. If he has something to say he can say it about me. But to question his reporting and why he stayed at the hotel… it’s just nonsense.

Frankly, CNN should be focusing on getting more scoops and not attacking Fox News. They should get back to reporting and stop this petulant behavior.”

Jennifer Griffin sticking by report on journalists being used as human shields in Libya

Fox News’s Jennifer Griffin was back on the air tonight repeating information she’d learned earlier today — information that has CNN correspondent Nic Robertson so incensed he’s been on CNN tonight talking as much about the war on the ground, as he is this battle with Fox News.

Griffin phoned into “On the Record” following a live report by correspondent Steve Harrigan — himself criticized by Robertson: “I see him more times at breakfast that I see him out on trips with government officials here,” said Robertson of Harrigan.

Griffin did not get into the media-on-media fracas touched off by her report earlier today in which British sources told her their mission last night was cut short because of the presence of the Western journalists and several Libyan civilians.

“They felt that the civilians and journalists had effectively been used as human shields and that was frustrating to them,” said Griffin tonight. “It was a very close call. In fact one official told me that there was a Reuters crew literally on a spot where they were going to drop a missile.”

But Griffin returned at 10:36 to clarify her reporting…

With Obama in Brazil, Clinton in France, and news from Libya, no slow Saturday for News Nets

New developments in Libya this morning, with the French military taking action, are keeping the U.S. cable news channels active.

Beginning at 11amET, CNN and CNNI began another simulcast of coverage with anchors T.J. Holmes of CNN and John Vause of CNNI covering the news. Correspondents Nic Robertson and Arwa Damon are in Libya, Ed Henry is in Brazil and Jim Bitterman and Jill Dougherty are in Paris.

Fox News Channel’s Neil Cavuto was already in for a live Saturday morning show on the economic recovery efforts following the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. He kept cameras trained on both Brasil — where President Obama was about to speak alongside Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff and on Paris, where Secy. of State Hillary Clinton was preparing to speak after meetings on the NATO action in Libya. Rick Leventhal and Steve Harrigan are in Libya (spooked by anti-aircraft fire during one live report today. Video after the jump.)

MSNBC went into the NoonET hour with anchor Richard Lui, as Pres. Obama was appearing with Pres. Rousseff. Correspondent Mike Viquiera is in Paris, Chuck Todd is in Brazil and Jim Maceda is in Libya for NBC/MSNBC.

None of the networks had a Brazilian interpreter during Pres. Rousseff’s lengthy opening statement. And just as the president was about to speak, all three networks lost the signal from Brasilia. It returned after about 3 minutes.

Cavuto stayed live until 12:17pm telling the audience, “We just wanted to keep you abreast not only of developments in the political world but certainly in the business world. We hope we served bot those audiences today and we appreciate our normal ‘Cost of Freedom’ audience being patient as we attempted both.”
